DEAR DIARY-- Today I was cruising through the pen and saw an artist painting a picture. As I looked closer, I saw that it was Rod Gibson, now favorite subject of advertisers, posing for Jailbird Cigarettes. Rod told me that Reece Cook owns the company producing these cigarettes and working with him are Gordon Baker, J. D. Plemmons, and Bobby Jacobs. Also that Kathleen Moody is the dancing girl on the package which Joe Monteith designed. The artist was Maitre Wiebe. As we were both in a rush, Maitre Wiebe invited me up to her studio on Fifth Avenue, the following afternoon. Since I had no other plans, I decided to go. There has NEVER been a more 'shocked person than I was when I entered her studio, because it was almost like entering a SHS class of '57 Seniors, except it was on canvas. As we looked over the pictures, she began telling me about each of them. The first one was of a South African jungle showing Love Brendle, famous New York interior decorator, work- ing on a grasshut belonging to Jim Franklin, head medicine man of the Watchiegoomies, of which Tom Mason is chief and Hazel Carnes, white goddess. Next was one of the Thirty-Seventh Inagural Parade with President Tom McClure naturally riding in the first car. The four Secret Service men guarding him were: Johnny Bridges, Lewis Blanton, Frank Cook, and Perry Henry. Following, was Vice President Huey Sutton's car. Barely' in view was the float of Mr. and Miss America, Sam Dillard and Lynne Pannell, and their attendants, Nina Snyder, Anne Smith, Jolene Cooper, Mary Ellen Sellers, and Bea Howell. Wow! The following picture was in the Jackie Revis Derby in Hollywood fformerly the Brown Derbyj. On stage was Gene Williamson and his steel guitar. Many celebrities were there. Seated at the first table is Glenn Jones, producer of the hilarious TV show Eat 'till You Bust: ' starring Billy Collins and Tommye Bradley. Seated at the second table is Peggy Jo Crawford, first woman member of the Supreme Courtg Lorraine Raby, ambassador to Franceg Carrie Belle Austin, head of the Library of Congressg and Mary Norman, Mother of the Year. At a table in the corner is Tom Ledbetter, famous scientist and inventor of the Cobalt bomb, with Betsy Crawford, well lfnown actress. At that table also is Paralee Allison, Queen of Mozambique, and Henry Bradburn, Professor at Harvard, Nearby, is Rip Dillard, famous professional football player. Entering the door are Peggy Extine and Bobby Holden, stars of the popular Broadway play Macbeth. The next was a queer looking picture. The building in the background resembled a school at first glance, but the bars on the windows and the sign MORGANTOWN STATE HOSPITAL set me straight. A group of officials was in the foreground. Sally said the man in the grey flannel suit was Larry Queen, chief administratorg next to him is Jean Ray, head nurse: and at one end is Shelba Bumgarner, head matron. I. D. Patterson is the editor of SQUARES AND CIRCLES, the hospital's own paper. He reports that one patient has been giving them quite a bit of trouble. I was amazed to hear it was Larry Stanberry. Next was a typical picture of Sylva in 1963. The ultra -modern Ritz Theatre is now owned by Nancy Ashe, Patsy Lewis, and Barbara Elders, along with numerous other theatres in W,N,C, The Sylva Pharmacy is owned by Gilbert Bess. The Lloyd Hotel has been remodeled and is called the Happy Haven, owned by Gary Sellers and his wife, the former Alice Huff. Bill Nicholson is the proprietor of Bil1's Forestry Service. His wife, former Anne Fisher, is official chopper of trees. Jo Anne Bradley, the math brain, does all the bookkeeping at Fulmer Motor Company. Doug Campbell, Joe Ginn, and Ronnie Harris are in the poolroom business together. Another new addition to Main Street is the office of Gail Allen, real estate agent. Ronnie Smith and Walt Henson now own the very popular Rolt Drive -In Cformerly Troy'sj. Helen Ward, Irene Wilkey, and Jean Callahan are nurses at the new municipal hospital. Jean Cogdill and Carolyn Blankenship own the town's favorite -and most exclusive dress shop. Denny Green has a business machine repair shop. Working with him are Carl Smith and Ral Tolbert. This is the future as seen by two nitwits. Marilyn Gillespie and Sally Wiebe
