GUIDANCE LEA DERSHIP LOVE COOPERA TION 744016064 A necessary element in order to insure a successful journey. Be- cause he has done much for the successful betterment of our schoolg he has set us an example of good sportsmanship and cooperation with others: he has helped to guide us through our problems and difficulties: and because he is a good friend as well as an excellent principal, we, the Senior Class of 1957, offer our sincere thanks to Mr. Hooper. The business of a leader is to turn our weaknesses into strength, obstacles into stepping stones, and disasters into triumphs. The class of 1957, in publishing this edition of The Hurricane, will be ever mindful of the high quality of leadership displayed by' our teachers during our years at Sylva High School. We turn to them instinctively for advice and direction and we trust their judgment unfalteringly. Under their leadership our school has progressed, not only in the building of an outstanding institution of learning, but also in the forming of the character of its students. We, the Seniors, wish to pay tribute to our teachers without, whose interest and guidance we would not be properly fitted to live in the spirit of truth, honorg freedom and courtesy. This word has been defined as a strong affection for another person such as the devotion of a parent to a child. No finer example of love has been displayed than that of our parents in helping us to secure an education. They have toiled long and hard in order to provide for us not only the necessities for school but also the extras. We have, through the years, accepted without much thought all they have offered such as: the money for the New York- Washington trip so freely given that we might have an experience which they have not hadg 'the new formal or suit for the Junior-Senior Banquet, as well as new clothes on many other occasions, that Sylva High might be proud of the appearance of its studentsg the money donated for the many worthwhile projects and the time given to support these projects. Now that we have come to the end of our high school career, we want to pause to tell them we sincerely appreciate all they have done and all the sacrifices they have made in love and devotion. The cornerstone upon which a successful community is built! To the benefactors of Sylva High School - the business people, patrons, and friends - for their understanding, their assistance and interest, we give our appreciation and gratitude.
