Clay Prophecy In the spr1ng of 1964 I Romame Rledel havmg heard that my old school chum V1rg1n1a Sm1tty to most of us was home on vacatlon after serv1ng as an 1ntern at the famed Mayo Cl1n1c, borrowed t1me from the var1ed dut1es mvolved 1n the care of a 500 acre farm to V1S1t her and remmlsce about old t1mes Smce lt was such a fme day we dec1ded to walk up tovsm and talk Wlth some of our former classmates who are now Sycamore busmessrnen Walkmg up Saffle Avenue we passed the garage owned by Gene and Albert George Gatchell 15 the1r chxef mechan1c They seem to have a f1ne busmess establ1shment Gettxng h1s car fllled at the pump 1S Kenneth Rlsley who tells us that he now oums a Hereford farm wh1ch 1S located just south of Allen Corfman s m1nk ranch Incldently the qual1ty of Allen s mmk pelts are nat1onally known Kenneth also tells us that Marlm Weaver has Just purchased afarm north of town and that Don R1edel and famxly have recently homesteaded a cla1m m Alaska After takmg leave of Kenneth we walk doum Ma1n Street and come to the grocery store owned by Jerry Hosterman We go 1n an are cordlally greeted by Jerry h1mself He modestly adm1ts that he has cha1n stores 1n several large c1t1es H1s Chlef accountant IS none other than Allcelee She also IS part t1me telephone operator wh1ch proves she st1ll has as much pep as when she was a cheerleader p1tcher catcher combmat1on for the Cleveland Ind1ans Vaughn has set a record of 35 wms and no losses U1 one season and Leon IS the only batter smce Ted W1l11amS to reach the coveted 400 mark Leavmg the store, we contmue our walk when we encounter Robert McVay who of course stops to talk It seems that he IS now head salesman for the Acme Greetmg Card Company where Gary Gregg IS the ch1ef des1gner and Phyll1s Ruhlen IS secretary to the presldent of the company Our cur1os1ty about other former classmates takes us to Upper Sandusky where many of them are employed On our way we pass Sycamore School where Janet Hufford IS teachmg the f1rst grade and Sh1rley Hannum IS cook Now she knows what we used to complaln about On the outsk1rts of Upper we come to a rootbeer stand Upon entermg we f1nd lt was owned and operated by Joanne and Maxme They tell us that the1r old pal Eleanor 1S the w1fe of a prosperous farmer and Sarah Kelly IS a wa1tress 1n an excluslve restaurant Across from the rootbeer stand we see a rambl1ng ranch house Wh1Ch Maxme tells us 15 owned by Irene Wyss and her husband Of course we stop to see her Whxle we are talk1ng to Irene we l1sten to a record recently released by Lowell Breyley s D1x1eland Band He has been currently tour1ng the country We also learn that two more classmates are workmg 1n Upper Mary Loxs Grandstaff who 15 head telephone operator and J1m Schryer who IS the new owner of the skatmg rlnk Th1s brxngs us up to date on all our old fnends except four We learn from Irene that Carolyn McG1nn1s and LOUISE McDermott are makmg homes for the1r husbands who are employees of a large factory m Tennessee Rlchard Balllet IS a capta1n U1 the A1r Force and Rlchard Shell horn 1S the chauffeur for a wealthy fam1ly wh1ch l1ves Ill New York I7 Jerry is still an avid baseball fan and he tells us that Vaughn and Leon Shell are a famous
