Whether you entered a lowly freshman, a confident sophomore, a carefree junior, or a college- conscious senior, the 1988-89 school year was one to be all fired up about. The spark began in August with the return of over 1800 students. As fall set in, we got off to a roaring start. We anxiously awaited Home- coming parties, the game, and the dance. Extra-curricular groups began, offering something for everyone. Fall turned to winter and the basketball season was upon us. Pictured on previous page: - John Grtmme. Cassi Ward, Mallory Mmson, Betsy Rosel 2 Caught in the spirit, the first semester flew by. Third quarter blues set in, but we were rejuvenated by the school musical, 'lOnce Upon a Mattress as everyone looked forward to spring break. Finally, spring fever sparked. We all planned for the events that signified the end of the school year - prom, exams, and, of course, graduation. Though the seniors prepared to leave, another class prepared to enter, and the flame of Sycamore High School continues to burn brightly. 4' 21 .. .MMoyAn-ch Top right: Chad Rimsky, Lily Golin. Classes display spirit Suddenly, as it out of nowhere, the onslaught hit. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors all approached the new school year with different ideas, moods, and goals; but always fired up about the new year. Freshmen: Fired up about the new atmosphere and environment that they were now a part of and scared of. Sophomores: Eager to see if they could step up in the world of high school life. Juniors: Fired up to start something new in the now familiar setting. Seniors: Fired up about anything and everything that they came into contact with. Fired up to get ready for that soon to come new life called college. Nick Masino and Matt Adams prepare for Spirit Weekt Fan'mum Above: Mike Haines, Pete Rudowski, Tom Knight. Beginning with award winning sports all the way to the academic team, our spirit just kept growing. There was no telling how far the Aviators woutd go. The year was endowed with traditional events such as dances, plays, and musicals. However, this year, creativity ran wild. Sycamore invented new and better things. The Hangar was created right in our own gym. Novel, student-oriented events such as Battle of the Bands and Spring Fting were great successes. The students of Sycamore High remained all fired up. This excitement carried over to the per- sonal level as well. Midst ail the hustle and bustle, new friendships kindled while old ones roared. Student life at Sycamore is more than books. classes, and events. ltis people making memories. And the mem- ories brought about by this year will never be forgotten. The spirit of '88389 far surpassed that of last year's classes. The circus theme could be seen throughout the school from the dec- orations in the Classrooms to the clothing of the spirited students. Awards for the best decorated firstbell rooms were given to the most creative classes. At the parade on Thursday night, the seniors won first place for their float, ttDevour the Redskins. Sports and Pep Rallies Cool autumn nights brought crowds to Sycamore's football games and soccer matches. lcy, cold winter days brought fans to basketball games, swim meets, and wrestling matches. Finally, warm spring weather attracted spectators to baseball games and track meets. The teams played hard while the fans cheered encouragement. Not only did the athletic events attract crowds, but so did Sycamore's pep rallies. The pep rallies, commented one sophomore, llcreated more spirit and school pride. This year there were more pep assemblies. The spirit of the rallies Top Right: Tim Cutter could be felt in the music of the band, the dances of the flyerettes and flag corps, and the cheers led by Sycamore's award winning cheerleaders. With the advent of more pep rallies, the students' spirit and enthusiasm was illus- trated at almost all sporting events. The crowds at the soccer and basketball games were the highest in years. Teams such as water polo, golf, tennis, and swimming competed in State tourna- ments. Overall, this yeafs effort to in- crease Sycamore's ttFlFtEl' helped in con- tributing to the teams' performances. , Bottom Left: Tina Ledarach, Kerry Ott. Big Night Under the Big Top By 9 o'clock on Saturday night the park- ing lot was beginning to fill. The rustle of taffeta and lace dresses could be heard as girls were helped from the car by thoughtful dates. Inside the commons, the band LIXX was starting some opening tunes while the first few couples stepped out onto the dance floor. The theme was ttBig Night Under the Big Topf and color- ful decorations transformed the commons into a magical circus. The red and yellow big top was the most eye-catching, sur- rounded by various circus animals, brightly decorated tables, and of course, lots of balloons. By 10 o'clock the dance floor was packed with students dancing and enjoy- ingthemselves. Finally, the court was pre- sented to the students at 11:30 while the band played the theme song, nWild Horses by the Rolling Stones. Holiday Dance For this Sadie Hawkins dance, giris worked up enough courage to ask their favorite guy. To add to the holiday spirit, the flurries that afternoon decorated the area with a blanket of snow. Once inside the dance, the stairs, commons, and lockers were in a ttPeppermint Paradise with streamers, lights, and giant candy canes. After getting pictures taken, couples began to mingle, and by ten o'clock, the commons was filled to cei- ebrate the Holiday Dance. Students danced until midnight to the band Red Wine. Students brought moms, dads, and friends to the S.H.A.P.E. sponsored dance. The evening included dinner, dancing to Ooh La La and the Greasers, and many door prizes. 22 23 Variety Show On Wednesday, April 12, parents and students piled into the Little Theatre to see their sons, daughters, and friends perform Mrs. Brenda Huffines, Sycamoreis Choir director, was pleased with the turn out. This was the tenth year for the Variety Show and once again, the response was overwhelming. uThe Variety Show gives kids who are in the music department a chance to have stage experience that they normally dont get during concerts or contestsf' said Huffines. But it also shows off the kids who aren't in the music department, but who are very talented. Puttin, On the Ritz , -' 9. . h A 'i. Opposite page: Top: Aaron Ploscowe. The student body response to working on the Log was almost non- existent after several months of an- nouncements. But thanks to Editor Joel Pravda and Assistant Editor Lori Mills and a few other dedicated students there is a 1989 yearbook. Lori and Joel, pictured above right, along with Betsy Warzon, Rick Juneja, Kayoko Matsumara, Mrs. Kitchents composition classes, and var- ious other contributors worked many hours to compile the Log. THE CLASS OF 89 THANKS YOU To the faculty and staff of Sycamore High, the class of '89 says a final goodbye. The last four years have gone very fast. Of course, the education and memories will last. We did arrive a motley crowd, but four years later, aren't you proud? As freshmen we thought we were very nice, but still you brought in Toma e twice! Then you closed the smoking lounge. For just a puff, you made us scrounge. And then there was the deal with parking passes. You never believed thats why we were late to classes. So that was yet another DT to serve. which, of course, we didnt deserve. To some teachers we caused such strife. that we forced them into the retired life Others still are hanging on, thankful that well soon be gone. I guess with Barnes we were in a rut. So they brought in a guy whose name was Tutt. Under his reign, we've been for three years. He helped us all and calmed our fears. As freshmen, we put Ms Rose to the test In spite of us, she did her very best. Then Mr. Hill had us for two more years, causing him to get a little gray about the ears. It was past the Rose and over the Hill to give dear Mr. Klasmeier quite a thrill. His many late nights and dedications 190 Balanced his endless jokes and humiliation. Mr. K. said 'To Columbus well go! However, the way he didnt quite know. Three and a half hours in a school van; giggly girls and guys and a very lost man. We finally got there; much fun we had. Plans turned out well. See? The luncheon's not bad! Mr. K., Miss Robinson, and, of course, Stritt, guaranteed this year would be a big hit. What's up Stritt? We thought this year was great. But now you're off to Ohio State. Dear Miss Robinson e words can't say all you've done to get us here today To the counselors e you helped us find our place. Now were off to enter the real rat race. With Plus Reports and GPAls, I guess you proved that studying pays. To Jerry, Ralph, Ed, and the crew, big thanks for cleaning up all the food we threw. After that, the pranks weren't bad, but throwing flour off the balcony is pretty sad. Homecoming, Kidnap. Dances too, are special memories to name just a few. Academics, of course, earn a place, but in my poem, they don't get much space. The time has come, welre outta here, but there's one thing that's very clear. Thanks to you, we made it through.
