— The doors of Sycamore High School opened early for the 1978-79 school year, on August 29. It was hard to get back into the daily routine when summer wasn’t even over, yet once again students and faculty alike managed to settle down to studies. Friendships, old and new, were experienced as people became involved in the many activities offered at Sycamore. Excited exclamations “Hey, how are ya? Did ya have a nice summer? were met with enthusiastic descriptions of one’s summer activities. The class of '79 realized their positions as Seniors and strived to make their last year at Sycamore memorable. Spirit demonstrated at pep assemblies proved the Seniors were number one but not without stiff competition. With all the excitement of a new school year, time spent alone were few and far between. Students reflected on their past and future while concentrating on the studies at hand. The Commons at Sycamore has always been a place of communication. During the lunch hours, students enjoyed a break from classes and a variety of food items, while conversing with their friends. The architectural aspects of Sycamore offer a different atmosphere than most high schools. Its open classrooms and stairways unify the school and its inhabitants as a whole. The ingenuity of the many students at Sycamore gives the school special characteristics. Each student is an independent individual, with equal opportunity to grow and expand his or her knowledge. Whether it be through classroom work, student interaction, or individual thought, each student is a vital and important part to the success of Sycamore High School The school was no longer an ominous monster to the freshman, and frankly, it was quite easy to get involved in the everyday functions of the school. Parking lot parties, usually associated with Friday night football became obsolete after warnings from police and administrators, and Finally, the installation of gates at the school’s entrances. Yet, life went on. Studying continued — a never ending practice — as Sycamore strived to do its job of education. Whether it was intense study in the science labs or quick note taking in a history class, students were involved in their schoolwork. Of course there was always time for close friends, an occasional monster in the halls, or just plain of school spirit. Like the balloons in the sky, the days were flying away quickly, faster than we ever realized. Even though we complained of the unrelentless loads of homework, we managed to survive the first grading period. (Well, most of us!) Class participation was important, no matter how ridiculous it seemed. As the winter season approached, and exams loomed ahead, there was a mind boggling realization that almost half of the year was over ... SYCAMORE HiO POLO REGAINS STATE TITLE All the long hard hours of practice paid off as the Varsity Waterpolo team once again proved their skill and maneuverability when they recaptured the State Championship! The whole team worked together to make 1978 one of the best seasons ever with an outstanding record of 19- 0-1! A record-breaking crowd traveled to the state meet in Columbus to cheer the undefeated Aviators on to victory. The Aves downed their first three opponents and in their final match, tied Upper Arlington. Out of twenty players named to All State, Sycamore, has been the only team to qualify six of their players to the first team. These players are Seniors: Bob Schipper, Wim Schipper, Eric Wuerfel, John Ritter, Ed Gaw and Junior Scott Browning. Congratulations to these players, the waterpolo team, and coaches Lyons and Madonis on their second State Waterpolo Championship! Sycamore had its first girl’s soccer team. Our team was very outstanding, losing only two games in season play. The girls ended their season tied for second in the EHL. There were many good players. The coach’s award went to Lorie Schaefer. The most valuable player was Chris Mather. The most improved player was Arlene Risma. Named to the EHL first string all star team were Audrey Ludeke, senior goalie. Kim Eaters, sophmore forward, and Chris Mather, also a sophmore forward. Named to the second string team were Arlene Risma, senior halfback, and Lorie Schaefer, sophmore halfback. The girls had a good season, filled with vivacity and comraderie. The Sycamore Aviators 1978 football season started off badly but ended with success. The season began with the new Coach Clark facing the job of preparing the team for Colerain and Wyoming, the city's toughest teams. Even with the fans cheering and shouting their lungs out, the Aves lost against them both and later against Aiken. It appeared hopeless until the Aves found a new strength within themselves that enabled them to win over the next two games with pride. Glen Este gave them trouble and won against them 9 to 7. The Aves still didn’t give up. They left the Glen Este game and went on to win all the following games with outstanding scores. Their determination to win even after a loss brought the Aves to a final victory. Varsity Football Cheerleaders First Row: Donna Pionc, Diane Drotar. Cheryl Clark. Second Row Kim Stewart. Kim Young. Coach The Girls’ Tennis Team finished the 78 season third in E.FI.L. play behind Indian Hill and Mariemont. Led by co-captains Anne Marx and Kathy Jenkins, the team had a successful season. Our singles and doubles entry missed regional qualifica- tion by one match. The team is losing 2 seniors. Anne Marx and Kathy Broxter- man. and have had several girls transfer to other states. This will make the ’79 season a challenge for all returning players. 35 BOYS’ TENNIS To go along with a fantastic overall record of 11 wins and 3 losses, the Boys Varsity Tennis Team tied for the league title with Mariemont and Indian Hill. This year’s team, under the superb coaching abilities of Mr. Tom Bohmcr. consisted of Seniors Bill Ford. Gary Munz and Mike Schcmcnt; Juniors Adrian Childress. Allan Childress. Jerry Lowe and John Marcus and Freshman Eric Schwarz. Losing only three seniors to graduation the team should be a strong contender for the league championship This year’s Junior Varsity Team consisted of 4 Sophomores: Matt Nixon. Earl Reinhart. Allen Schwartz, and John Seeds and 5 Freshmen Will Achbcrgcr. Kevin Biedcrman. Ben Cohen. David Driver, and Mark Folmcr The coach was Mr. Dan Murray and under his direction, they compiled a seasonal record of 8 wins and 6 losses. With five returning players, the team should be able to improve upon their 79 season Sycamore had another first this year when Junior Jerry Lowe became the first tennis player to qualify for the State Tournament. But before Slate. Jerry was a finalist in the Hamilton Taft Invitational; he qualified for Districts where he then qualified for the State Tournament. At State he was a quarter finalist. For all of his hard work and outstanding tennis abilities. Jerry was named to the Cincinnati En- quirer's All City First Tennis Team. I Seniors Bill Ford and Gary Munz, as a doubles team, qualified for the District Tournament. They were both named to the East All-Star Ten- nis Team for the Enquirer's East-West All-Star Scries and provided Sycamore with a top-notch duo for their ’79 season competition. 37 CROSS COUNTR Y The Cross Country team enjoyed their best season since 1972 as they captured the E.H.L. Championship. But it was not with- out a lot of hard work. In September, the Aviators had lost meets to both Indian Hill and Mariemont. Considering those losses, it would be easy for the team to give up. But they did not! Led by Junior Doug Bintzler, the Aviators turned in a league record performance by placing four runners in the top ten, and 7 runners in the top 15 to win the Eastern Hills League Championship. Seniors Steve Garrett, Jeff Stevenson, Tom Nye and Corey Buck had seen the program rise to the top and they will be hard to replace. Juniors Bintzler and Jim Pratt, sophomore Bob Morris and Freshman Doug Hopster all played important parts in the championship and will be back to defend it. With the help of the outstanding Junior Varsity team, the best years may still lie ahead. But, they will not be there without a lot of hard work. GOLF An athletic team sets many goals before the start of a season. Winning the league championship, competing in the sectional and district tourna- ments, and qualifying for the state championship are goals which any team strives to attain. The 1978-79 varsity golf team achieved all of these goals. Led by seniors Bill Pilaris, Kevin Mosley, Greg Kuntz, Brian Haggerty, and junior Gregg McDougal, the team won the Eastern Hills League championship, finished first in the Sectional Tour- nament, second in the District Tournament, and sixth in the State Championship at Ohio State University. Other team members include Rob Bur- chett, Tom Griffiths, and Lori Falso. The com- bined work of everyone contributed to the most successful season for any Sycamore golf team. Coach Nancy Fasold. co-captains Linda Christian and Nancy Hall, along with the rest of the team, feel that their record did not show just how good a team they really had. With only four returning players, next year’s team will really have to hustle and work hard if they wish to be in contention for the league title. FIRST ROW E. McGrccvey, D Larsen. L. Forester. Mr. Joe Powell. Sounds like it would be a pretty bad season, but with hard work and dedication the J.V. team managed to make the fall of 78 a winning one with an 8 win and 6 loss record. It appeared as if the Aves were playing up to their potential against Mariemont but followed this with four consecutive losses. Floundering in 7th place in the league with a 1-6 record the Aviators began a new season with a team effort against Deer Park followed by another great game against Glen Este. The enthusiasm became contagious with Tim Williams and Mike Woehler leading the team offensively and Chuck Parker and Scott Leonard directing the attack and playing excellent defense. Both Greg Cantwell and Tracy Shaw shared the center position and cleaned the boards. Bill Ford, Jim Whit- tenbarger, Lewis Klatt, and John Baragar gave us the opportu- nity to substitute freely and maintain the intensity of play. Big wins during this season were a 2 pt. win at Madeira, a 9 pt. win at Milford, and a one point victory over Indian Hill. Few teams would accept the challenge of coming back with an 8-3 record in the second half of the season after a start of 1- 6. THEY DID. 42 FIRST ROW: Mike Wochlcr. The 1979 Junior Aviators basketball team exploded into its season with three straight victories over Reading, Madeira, and Loveland. Since this group of young men had never de- feated Milford, our fourth game at home was a difficult loss by only one point. We then travelled to Indian Hill and had all kinds of problems with the Braves. Only half of our team was there to begin the game, and we found ourselves behind 24-10 at halftime. After a strong third and fourth quarter we suc- cessfully won our fourth victory. Mariemont was our next opponent and we found the lid on our basket from the opening tip-off. Consequently the game ended with Mariemont leading by two points. The remainder of the first round saw us defeat Deer Park and Glen Este, thus achieving third place in the E.H.L. The second round of the basketball season opened with one victory over local rival Moeller and two losses to Princeton and Lakota. We had a meeting just prior to our first league game of the second round and we decided all we had to do was win the last seven games and we would win the league. Madeira and Loveland fell quickly and for the 1st time in four years we defeated Milford at Milford. Mariemont, Indian Hill, Deer Park, and Glen Este all experienced defeat at the hands of the determined young Aviators. We finished at 14-4 and a share of the E.H.L. This was the first basketball cham- pionship of this fine young team. v.w 44 TOP ROW Vicki Roth. Dana Butler BOTTOM ROW: Sue Montgomery. Debbie Rouse. Tamy Riegler. Missy Donaghy. VARSITY WRESTLING Sycamore Wrestlers dominated the 1979 E.H.L. action as the Varsity team persisted in capturing the E.H.L. title. Strong performances were demonstrated by seniors Doug King, Tom Gee, Russ Mueller, Chip Nel- son, Mark Mather, and Steve Garrett. Garrett (112), King (126). Mather (HWT) and junior Mike Murray (185) controlled the mat as they were league champs in their weight classes. The unprecedented season record of 8 wins 0 losses further implied the high quality nature of this 1979 squad. Freshman George Tanaka joined the Varsity squad mid-season and compiled a record of 3-5. Sycamore power continued to reign as eight Varsity wrestlers qualified in district duals. These men were Glenn Ben- nett (105), Garrett, King. Doug Bintzler (132), Dale Trout- man (145), Tony Traub (167), Murray and Mather. Mather and Garrett went on to State Competition where Steve Garrett succeeded in finishing fourth in the State Competi- tion. Garrett’s performance was the best ever recorded in Sycamore history. He also compiled a sensational win-loss record of 32-3. Coach Gary Listerman and the entire Varsity Wrestling team did an outstanding job for Sycamore. Congratula- tions! After finishes of sixth, seventh, and fifth the past three seasons, the aviators moved into a position to challenge for the league title this year before settling for 3rd place. Leading the sprinters was senior Jeff Pauls; but he had plenty of help from Villars, Brasch, Engel, Toth, Rengers, and Co. Big wins included the Gold Medal Championship 880 and 440 relays at Norwood. With only Pauls depart- ing, the sprinters could make '80 a good year also. As with the sprinters, the distance runners should be strong in '80 as everyone returns. Bob Morris, only a sophomore, led the distance team in both the half mile and the mile with help from Bintzler, Page, Foraker, Hopster, and Ster- nasty. The Field events were the Aviators’ strongest, led by seniors Mark Mather, Mike Giardina and Gene Feagans. Mather was sectional champion before placing second in the state meet in the discus. While these young men will be missed, rival coaches have little sympathy as Koch, Winkler, Denny and Brasch seem ready to step into their shoes. All things considered, it was a very good year. The halls are empty and quiet. Many times, as we are caught up in the day’s activities, we take for granted the beautiful building in which we study. This prize-winning architectural structure instills pride in everyone who enters the building. We are indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to learn in such a distinguished educational institution. HOMECOMING WEEK Sycamore's 1978 Annual Homecoming Week was full of ac- tivities and surprises. As the classes worked diligently to prepare for the parade and dance, numerous unexpected interruptions almost caused cancellations of the weeks events. Elton John’s “Your Song” was the theme of Homecoming. The weeks festivi- ties came to an end as Queen Arlene Risma and King Mark Mather presided over their court. 90 HOMECOMING DANCE The climax of Homecoming week occured Saturday evening when the court, led by King Mark Mather and Queen Arlene Risma, danced to the theme song, “Your Song. The Homecoming committee romantically deco- rated the tables with red roses, laced the balcony with musical notes, and furnished a beautiful fountain. The night was truly unforgetable and will be fondly remembered in the years to come. 92 rokxJ rm y v Av n ? ni. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Sycamore Chapter of the National Hon- or Society inducted twenty-eight new members during the 1978-79 school year in recognition of academic achievement. The new inductees were informed of their membership by tapping cere- monies held November 6th. On the evening of November 14th, friends and families of the new members watched proudly as the twenty-eight inductees were officially received into member- ihip. 94 CHRISTMAS DANCE The Christmas Dance once again took place when the winter air was chilly. But the warm atmosphere of the beautifully decorated commons, with the band “Shadow Fax ’ made a delightful evening for those who attended. 97 98 HAPPENING? The Senior athletes presented the school with their tro- phies and an account of their successes during the fall season. Amusing gifts were given to all Seniors in apprecia- tion for their hard work and accomplishments during the season. 99 GROUP PROJECTS The Sycamore Key Club held its first annual banquet in the spring of 1979. Presiding President Chris Battle. Principal Rollin Good paster, and the Key Club members, along with their parents, relived the highlights of the past year. 101 In May the Lincoln Heights Health Center came for two days to take blood pressure Many students participated as well as teachers. Often you would see teachers with their entire class getting their blood pressure tested. 102 The Annual WSAI All-Star Basketball Game was a highlight of the winter months. The Faculty All-Stars consisted of Mr. Henke. Mr. Stewart. Mr. Thennis. Mr. Gausman, Mr. Newberry, Mr. McConnell and Mr. Sutter. The game brought many onlookers as well as laughs. 103 104 “Starry Starry Night The class of 1980 hosted a beautiful junior-senior prom for the class of 1979. “Starry Starry Night was held at Cincinnati Convention Center. A glittering background of stars flashed throughout the room as “Amazing Grace provided an exciting evening of music. The prom court nominations were Mark Garner, Debbie Ludlow, Chris Battle, Carol Mason, Archie Franklin, Kim Stewart, Marcie Johnston, Tracy Beedon, Rob Allonier, and Mike Pohl. Because the voting was so close, Archie Franklin and Tracy Beedon were prince and princess, and Marcie Johnston and Mike Pohl were prom Queen and King. As the dance ended at 1:30 a.m., the guests departed with happy memories of a beautiful evening. 10S PERFORMING ARTS —r MARCHING BAND CADET BAND FIRST ROW: D Kuroff. D. Moore. P Hedges. G. Moores. Director Leslie Knotts brilliantly staged the pro- duction and brought out the captavat- ing talents of Karen Dean as Helen Keller and Leigh Wasson as Annie Sul- livan. The entire cast did an outstand- ing job that will long be remembered by those who attended. 131 CA TCH ME IF YOU CAN! Sycamore’s winter theater “in-the-round production of CATCH ME IF YOU CAN provided much laughter and entertainment to all those who attended. The clever whodunit plot kept the audience in suspence throughout the entire play. Congratulations to the following cast members: Daniel Corban .................................................Bob Eck Inspector Levine ...................................................Mark Gerberick Father Felleher.....................................................Mark Damron Elizabeth Corban....................................................Barb Ramsey Sidney ..............................................................Ken O’Donnell Mrs. Parker.................................................Tami Speck Everett Parker .............................................Ken Jaquot 132 THE SOUND OF MUSIC 134 SOUND OF MUSIC The “halls” were alive with “The Sound of Music” during the many late-night rehearsals for this year's smash-hit musical. Directed by Dennis Klasmeier, with assis- tant director Leslie Knotts, the fascinating real-life story of the Von Trapp family was a three-night standing-room only success. Playing Maria was no problem to solve for talented Stephanie Runyon. Phil Schwegmann was excellent as the gruff, lonely captain. The entire cast turned in a near-professional performance, enhanced by the charming and talented children. Much credit should go to the crew, the multitude of behind-the- scene workers, and the orchestra, directed by Pete Metzger. Congratulations to all, and thanks for a great show! 135 136 i3a ADMINISTRATION Mr. Rollin Good paster Principal Mr. Dan Henke Assistant Principal COUNSELORS Mr. Dale Matthews Mr. Richard Canter Mr. Colin Stewart Mrs. Marialyce Knoll Mr. R.D. This year Senior As- sembly was held two evenings so that the produc- tion could be enjoyed by everyone. Various skits and songs were performed before an audience of parents and very rowdy students. The 1979 Senior Assembly was an overwhelming success and only good comments were heard from those who attend- ed. 187 189 The Sycamore High School Commons was filled to capacity for the 1979 Senior Recognition ceremonies. Parents and fellow students watched as sons, daughters, and fellow classmates were honored for high academic standards throughout their four years at Sycamore. Honor cords which were based on eight semesters of scholastic success were awarded. Special honor cords were distributed to those students ranking in the top ten percent of the graduating class. Scholarships and special awards were also presented at Senior Recognition. Tension rose among the seniors as they prepared for the following evening of graduation. 192 7m Susan Ackcrmann Ellen Aeree Tom Adams Kim Addison Jeff Adler Rob Allonier Mark Anderson Lora Arnold For the third consecutive year, the class graduated in the elegant surroundings of Cincinnati’s Music Hall. Donna Fairbanks and Chris Battle spoke on behalf of the class of ’79. Superintendent Eugene Shrimpton presented the graduating class, and prin- cipal Rollin Goodpaster led in the presentation of diplomas. Honorary diplomas were presented to parents of Lonnie Mahone and Cathy Kiessling two of the three fellow students which the class had tragically lost during their four years at Sycamore. Meredith Edleman led in the turning of the tassels, as the class officially became graduates. The evening everyone had waited for passed quickly. Four years of hard work, good times, tears, and close friends were represented that night. Even though our years at Syca- more are over, the memories and good feelings associated with Sycamore will always be remembered. Nothing is ever final, there is always something in the future worth living for. 227 Look to this day for it is life, the very life of life. In its brief course, lie all the realities and truths of exis- tence, the joy of growth, the splendor of action, the glory of power. For yesterday is but a memory. And tomorrow is only a vision. But today well lived makes every yesterday a memory of happiness. Look well, therefore to this day. 228 Sr ADVERTISING DIVISION OF MANAGE VENT RECRUITERS SPECIALIZING IN CLERICAL PERSONNEL PLACEMENT 651-5500 ENQUIRER BUILDING SUITE 600 617 VINE STREET Creager-Patten Floor Covering Co. 9426 Montgomery Rd Cincinnati, Ohio Wm. Comprised of a very small percentage of the student body, we, the Log Staff, have dedicated ourselves to illustrating the 1978-79 school year in such a manner that you. the student, may remember the people, places, and things that were so vital at Sycamore High School. The endless hours of drawing layouts, cropping pictures and typing copy are well worth the effort once the book comes together in finished form. It is at this time, while you are holding this book, that we may turn the pages to recreate the previous year’s joys and sorrows and realize that our high school years are but a fleeting moment of our lives. Take this book and relive the past, for the future is now and today won’t last. Turn the pages and remember a face, look up a name and recall the place. This isn’t just a yearbook; it’s a great big mirror book, enabling us all to reflect upon special people and events. Treasure it always, always. The 1978-79 Log Staff Co-editors: Linda Van Osdol Kim Robinson Advisor: Joyce Peterson 248 The doors closed at Sycamore High school for the 1978-79 school year on June 5. With the pressure of exams and homework over, the students, as well as the teachers, looked forward to an exciting summer. It would be 3 months of fun and summer work for many Congratulations to the Class of 1979 for a job well done. Sycamore salutes you and wishes you luck in the years to come. The students are leaving, the lockers are empty, and another year is behind us. The memories we’ve shared, the tears we’ve shed, made it a very special year. Good-bye, Friends
