Text from Pages 1 - 228 of the 1976 volume:

You are so beautiful to me STAY COOL te It takes more than just talent to play on any team at Syca- more. It takes deter- mination, self re- spect, and most of all, it takes people. People who are wil- ling to give up their time to make Syca- more a place to be proud of. Self disci- pline, teamwork, and love for the game are what it's all about and at Sycamore, we've got it! These are just a few of the faces of those who give it all they've got. These are the ones that make it all worthwhile. THE PEOPLE — (left to right from the top). TRAGEDY ON THE HILL Sycamore was upset by Indian Hill, a loss that knocked them out of first place, and dampened the spirits of a strong Aviator team. It was the night of October 3, and Head Coach Dave Hurst's Sycamore Aviators took the field at Indian Hill. The Aviators were in sole possession of first place in the East- ern Hills league, and they intended to stay there. In the first few minutes of the game, Indian Hill showed a bit of the usual, but by the time the game had ended, they were the most fired up team that Sycamore had seen in a while. Inju- ries and missed points after touchdowns caused the Sycamore defeat. It would have been 28-28 had Syca- more made the four points after touch- downs, but the Braves of Indian Hill won 28- 24. The Aviators lost their first game to Colerain, but came right back and won three straight games over Aiken, Mariemont, and Glen Este. That was when we traveled to the Hill. Sycamore then came back for homecoming, but lost to Madeira, who ended up league champs. A Saturday afternoon loss at muddy Milford, with a score of 6-0, just about broke the Aves apart. Then the Aves de- stroyed Deer Park and Loveland, to give hope for a sweet victory over Wyoming. It just wasn't Sycamore's night at Wyoming as the Cowboys and their star, Fred Jacobs, held Sycamore scoreless. It was a 5-5 season which proved the best team doesn't always win. Tim Roffel sinks in the mud at Milford. Herb Noble (46) drives for his man ogamst Deer Pork. The faces of the Sycamore bench show the work they've been through. 18 19 The Sycomore crowd gets ROWDIE ot Deer Pork gome. „ - 36 j M xtarc .... Coaches Doug Gausmann and Bush had a trying season in a very tough soccer league. The finish of 0-1 1-3 didn't leave bad feelings with Sycamore though. The reason for this is the outlook for next year. VARSITY SOCCER — BACK ROW: Bill McMillan, Bill Jordon, Mark Beach Brian Smith, George Cook, Bart Sheeler, Dave Eogle, Tim Hmrichsen. CROSS COUNTRY — BACK ROW: Sondi Larsen, Steve Morrer, Bill Mattingly, Brad Stevenson, Todd Stevenson, Rich Purdue, Scott Demar. MIDDLE ROW: Fran Schlueter; MGR., Jim Whittenbarger, Jeff Wallace, Bill Sponng, Todd Williams, Jeff Stevenson, Sue Rosneck; MGR., Matt Foraker. FRONT ROW: Dave Sporing, Cooch Manuel Lonker, Tom Nye, Bob Hayes, Rusty Winget, Mike Dick, Cooch Vmce Solvato, Eddie Kenny. SENIOR C.C. — Sandi Larsen, Dave Sponng, Steve Marrer, Todd Stevenson, Richard Purdue. Brad Stevenson hauls along at the E.H. Greene School. It was a year finishing right in the thick of things for the cross country runners of Sycamore. Bruce Woodard set the pace for the Aves, finishing sec- ond and fourth in the two E.H.L. meets at French Park. Coach Vince Salvato sees a good strong crop of freshman for the teams of the future. Steve Marrer hits the home stretch. 23 REMEMBER ST. FRANCIS — WE’RE COMIN’ BACK Sycamore lost only two games in it's first year of water polo, both to Toledo St. Francis, and one cost them a state championship. It was a year to be proud of for the first Sycamore water polo team in history. The Avia- tors put together a fine season in which they came in NO. 2 in the state. Sycomore will go for revenge! VARSITY WATER POLO— BACK ROW: Chip Giertson, Craig Leanord, Mike Sigourney, Bob Ritter, Steve Eblmg. MIDDLE ROW: Steve Toth, Todd Siple, Fred Brown, Gary Korengel, Jim Bloebaum. SIT- TING: Bob Fenwick, Steve Kaimer. 24 THE CREAM OF THE CROP Sycamore Lettermen worked hard to make the name Sycamore one of the best in Oh high school sports. TOE AQOIMY AS® TOE ECSTASY Rob Adams returned as captain and led a flock of juniors to a second place finish. The biggest week in Sycamore Basketball his- tory was about to begin. Madeira and Indian Hill were going to visit the Aviators to decide the E.H.L. championship. The Mustangs of Madeira marched into Sycamore on a Tuesday night carried by six straight league victories. It ended up a heart breaking double overtime loss for the Aviators. How a team so bitterly beaten on a Tuesday, could come back and face another great team the following Friday will never be known. But when Indian Hill finally realized what had happened, it was to late to begin to try for a comeback. The sweet revenge that the Avia- tors had dreamed of for a long month was fi- nally satisfied. The Aves finished in a two way tie for second with Indian Hill in the E.H.L., much better than expected. After beating Talawanda in the first tournament game, the State runner up Middletown Middies ended it 98-57. But it was taken with less pain than usual, because Indian Hill will never forget the night of Feb- ruary 6, 1976. In the aftermath of Sycamore's 80-68 surprise killing of the Indian Hill Braves, Sycamore coach, Don Moormeier, sliced away at a victo- ry cake, presented by the Sycamore cheerleaders. In the corner of every player's mind was the hope for a championship. The entire season however, wasn't cake and icing for this team. They had to overcome big things, ond the task was a hard one. Led by just one senior, Rob Adams, the Avia- tors looked like just another Sycamore basket- ball team as Princeton ran off with a 77-55 victory. But the eyes of city began to grow as they saw the Aves reel of 5 straight wins. But the Aves forgot how to shoot a free throw at Lakota and lost by 2 points. It was a cool crisp night in early January. The Sycamore bus pulled up in Indian Hill High School parking lot. Four and one half hours later, the same bus left carrying a sad basket- ball team, swearing revenge on the HILL one month later. During the one month wait, the Aves had troubles. After surviving a scare by the Mariemont Warriors, Moeller recaptured the Old Oaken Bucket. Three wins and a loss to Loveland followed. The Sycomore ROWDIES keep the spirit olive behind the voice of Byron Freemon (in the Aviator hot) to leod the Aves to victory (upper left). Coaches Sutter ond Moor- meier contemplate the game with Indion Hill (lower left). 27 VARSITY BASKETBALL — BACK ROW MGR. FRONT ROW: Herb Noble, George Romons, Bruce Tunnell, Todd Powers, f APT Rob Adams, Roger Veith, Rick Shipley. Jim Cafferky's 1975- 76 Reserve team put together a final record of 9-9. They put Herb Noble on the varsity team however, and had some great ploy by Dave Sorg And Rob Odom. After winning the E.H.L. cham- pionship the year before, Mr. Cafferky had to be disap- pointed, but the ef- fort involved will put a lot of players in contention for next year's varsity team. j V BASKETBALL — Russ Dickey, Don Smith, Jett Arrington, Mike Duncan, Brian Feldmeyer, Rob Odom, Bruce Haupt, Mike Turner, MGR Gory Miller. MISSING — Tim Kosty ond Dove Sorg. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL — FRONT ROW Rusty Wmget. Bill Ford, Mike Cholok, Kevin Mosley. MIDDLE ROW: Tim Willioms. Rondy Odom, Dove Holmes, J.D. McKibben Jerry Reeve. BACK ROW Jeff Williams Dole Gregory, Croig Thomos, Mike Wholer, Chris Bpttle, Note Johnson MGR Scott Rumon — Stat. MISSING: Jim Wh.ttenborger, Roger Dovis— Stot. Cooch Doug Gaus- mann's 1975-76 freshman basketball team put out enough effort to finish sec- ond in the E.H.L. The Frosh finished with a 10-4 overall record and 6-1 in the league. Mike Whaler put out an outstand- ing 52% field goal percentage. 29 m'kc wikmtc The Flying Fish smoked their way to 3 in the State of Ohio, falling just short of arch-rival St. Xavier. They knew they were good when they started. It was just a matter of proving it to the state of Ohio. That's exactly what they did. The Flying Fish of Sycomore High School smoked through wave after wave to be the NO. 3 team in the state. Gary Kuhre was not just the run of the mill diver either. He ended up state diving champ. Craig Leonard put forth the effort to become most valuable swimmer. The Flying Fish finished with a 4-2 dual meet record, winning the An- derson, Princeton, and Mariemont Invitationals. Then, a win in the sectional. The two losses came in the District and State Cham- pionship. This is one Sycomore swim team that won't soon be for- gotten. il no Cooch Zoller looks on as the Fish fly (upper left). C. Leonord, J. Keller, S. Koimer, J. Bloebaum, ond D. WRESTLING — FRONT ROW: Paul McElforsh, Steve Gorret, Thod Reid, Dave Smith, Greg Lorsen, Tim Turek. BACK ROW: Jeff Grimmer, Byron Freeman, Dave Hersh- berger, Mark Mather, Bloke TerVeen, Don Hogan, Cameron Tilton. The 1975-76 Sycamore Wres- tlers surprised the city at the start of the season with victories over favored Indian Hill and Moeller. Reed Chacksfield was the star at heavyweight setting a school record of 18 pins. Reed was also selected most valuable player. Dan Smith received the Larry Nelson Memorial Award for his contribution to the Sycamore Wrestling Program. All of these factors put together a strong contender in the E.H.L. race. After defeating Indian Hill and Moeller, the Aviators went on to finish the season with a 7-3 record. One highlight of the season was the school records set by Reed Chacksfield and Jeff Schumacher, each pinning a man in 18 seconds. Thad Reid was voted the most improved player of the year. With more effort put in as it was this year, the Aviators will be strong con- tenders. Cooch Listermon gives o worried look (top right). Jeff Gerbrick awaits the signal (Middle-right). NEW LOOK ON THE DIAMOND New uniforms, bat girls, a new field, and a new coach gave Sycamore baseball a new look but the championship avoided them one more time. 36 OLD WORN OUT SHOES There were no gigantic awards given out to the 1976 Sycamore track team but the battered and tattered shoes they wore reminded them of the hours and miles. Only time will tell. Mrs. Ford said that Judson claimed to be the discoverer of element 105, insisting it be called boomerium, and Mr. Bliton said that Judson was really Raphael Zupnick who was a C.I.A. agent in Somerset, Kentucky. Mrs. Wade said that Judson was Bruno Feldmeyer's long lost cousin and that he had been leading the life of a her- mit in Antarctica for the last fifteen years. When Mr. Sutter was asked this question he said, Judson just happens to be the greatest snow skier in the Austra- lian Air Force. It was his valiant effort which won the war of the worlds for the Australian Aborigine tribe — Kano. Mr. Taylor felt that Judson Boomer was the name of the Sycamore Aviator . And who knows, maybe it is. These are only a few of Sycamore's teacher opinions concerning Judson Boomer. No one seems to know who Judson is. Do you? The background of this man was a mystery to the student body, but various faculty members allowed us to print their opinions of Judson's origin and business. The vari- ous opinions really did not help to discover Judson's origin and business, though, be- cause the opinions were so different. But it is an individual choice, so choose the one you think best fits the desc ription of a mys- terious man. Mr. Lanker felt that Judson was the newest addition to the Sycamore teaching staff, and that he was of medium size, rather good looking, about twenty-eight years old, and he taught Spanish because he loved to. Mr. Henke had quite a story to tell about Judson. He said, Judson is one of the most interesting people I've ever studied. His contribution to the world of art is un- paralleled. Who could ever forget Whis- tler's Father or his modern abstract Downtown Blue Ash after Dusk . Few people know that he was equally talented as a writer. Tfiere was the float construction, (which class would win? — the Sophomores!) the rousing pep assembly, the parade through town, and then the night of the football game. We did not win, the score was Madeira, 22, Sycamore, 8. But at Halftime, as the flyerettes, majorettes, and band performed, spirit was as strong as ever. Then came the crowning of the court with Sharon Shipley and Jerome Byrd as Queen and King. Their court consisted of seniors Rob Adams and Patti Frick; juniors Lynn Tarazewich and Roger Vieth; sophomores Gail Garrett and James Kalsbeek; freshmen Tama Kirby and Bret Harison The best of Homecoming was still to come. Satur- day, at 8:00, our everyday commons became the enchanting setting for the Games of Magic Homecoming dance. Ushers were dressed as magicians in black capes and tall hats. Other magician instruments were used as table centers. Everyone was in good spirits, dancing, laughing, and talking. But as the hours slipped by, and the crisp new corsages began to fade a little, the time came to say good-bye. Sadly, everything was over. The awaited celebration of our school's Homecoming was a week to remember. V 92 WEEK 93 Starry, Starry 94 95 PROM Our prom occured on the night of May 8th, 1976. It was held in the Hall of Mirrors of the Netherland Hilton Hotel. Something new was added this year. Dinner was served at the prom. This was a big success. Sycamore had the biggest turn-out for prom ever. At 12:00, the court was announced. Sharon Shipley and Chris Storm were second runners up, Lynn Mohr and Andy Stewart were first, and the prom king and queen were Ray Ross and Sue Gee. The band played I Only Have Eyes For You in a special dance for the court. At 1:00, it was time to go. Prom night was not over yet but the rest can be left for you to remember. 96 98 99 100 101 IDE CURIOUS SAVAGE IN DINNER THEATRE In mid-November, S.T.A.G. presented THE CURIOUS SAVAGE in a manner totally new to Sycamore: Dinner Theatre. The first two performances were done in a conventional manner. Then, the entire set was ripped down, turned around, and put up backwards to face the Commons. On the last two nights, a deluxe buffet dinner was served, after which the audience (the show was sold out three nights out of four) sat back and enjoyed the show. SAVAGE deals with a lovable matron who has recently fallen heir to $10 million in negotiable bonds which she wants to put into a Happiness Fund. Her three grown stepchildren put her into a Home called The Cloisters in hopes of getting the money. Mrs. Sav- age, however, has hidden the bonds and leads the kids on a myriad of wild-goose chases in fruitless search of the bonds. At The Cloisters, Mrs. Savage meets cherubic Hannibal, shy Jeffrey, child-like Fairy Mae, doll-toting Florence, and feisty Mrs. Paddy, who never speaks except to bellow lists of things she hates. Through her escapades, Mrs. Savage teaches the in- mates — as well as the audience — the importance of unimportant things. THE CAST Mrs. Savage Titus Savage. . . , Samuel Savage . Verkuilen 102 U' 103 □ □ D Sycamore's second production of the year was Paul Zindel's THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-1 N-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS, which has something of an unusual history at our school. MARIGOLDS was first directed during the '74-'75 school year by Karen Rouse, than a senior. It was considered of high enough quality to be token to an interscholastic contest ot Raymond Walters, where it won o superior rating. This year, Mr. Dennis Klosmeier held tryouts for the port of Ruth (vacated when Melissa Walloce graduated), got the rest of the original cast together, and began rehearsals again. This year, MARIGOLDS ran — in the round, as last year — for three nights, Jan. 14, 15, and 17. On opening night, two judges from International Thespians attended. Soon afterward, Mr. K told the cast that the show would be taken to both the Ohio State Conference (weekend of Feb. 20) and the In- ternational Thespian Conference (at Ball State Uni- versity, week of June 21, 1976). This clearly dem- onstrated that the cast and crew of MARIGOLDS attained a superior level of quality. MARIGOLDS is a character study of the Hunsdorfer household: Beatrice, the mother, slovenly and em- bittered; Ruth, the eldest daughter, half-mad, soon to be a carbon copy of her mother; Nanny, the oc- togenarian vegetable living with the family for $50 a week; and Tillie, the younger daughter, unob- strusive, undemanding, almost pathologically shy, but with two gifts: science and hope. As the family sinks in a quagmire of hate and frustration; as they are soon to be swallowed up by the acidic bitterness of the world and themselves, only one can escape. And that one ... is Tillie. MUSIC MAN wows ’em Who could resist that everfresh musical come- dy, THE MUSIC MAN? Judging from the crowds who attended Sycamore's production in March, hardly anyone! There was some- times what seemed like o cast of thousands, but with Mr. Klasmeier as director ringleader, all went smoothly — most of the time, that is. Mr. Wagner produced the show, and with the cast really working together from everything from Shipoppi to Till There Was You , Sycamore theatre fans were treated to an eve- ning of music, fun, romance — to put it plainly, pure enjoyment.
