“
Knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdom. One can find it, live it, be fortified by it, do wonders through it, but one cannot communicate and teach it.” , Siddhartha Hermann Hesse 0 SEPTEMBER, 1972 SCHOOL BEGINS! FOOT- BALL! A season of hard work begins in the extreme August heat. Game one-defeat! They learned all too quickly that the perfect season of '71 be- longed to another group of Aviators, that they alone must live with the record that they alone would build. 14 Hours of strain, sweat, and tears have earned for this moment in the sun, and he will use it as he sees fit For the first time in thirteen weeks of the close communion, of body contact and physical combat, our team was together and they knew what the game was all about. 17 There's enough of us who want to win this game and we're gonna do it. I'm gonna run my legs off. •liOt It had rained that night, as it had done for so many nights during the season, but the rain reduced itself to a slight mist scarcely noticed by the young men huddled along the sidelines. All those assembled wore the game uni forms of Sycamore Football; although, the muddy earth from the night's game clung to their uniforms and bodies so completely that all identi- fying features were hidden. This was their finest hour. Managers (BELOW, LEFT TO RIGHT): Jim Poffenbarger. Bill Teater, Mike Williams. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL (ABOVE, LEFT TO RIGHT) SEATED: Coach Reisenberg, E. Shalrin, D. Fluker, A. Set off by the play- acting of children, the towns people of Salem turn on their neighbors, and condemn them for witchcraft. 37 What Is A Basketball Player? To his father he has the speed of Boy Hayes, the moves of Bob Cousy, and the shots of Jerry West--all combined. To his Coach he has the stability of much, the speed of a snail, and has about as much chance of playing the next game as would his own grandmother. Meanwhile the Coach is also analyzed. When his team is losing he is incompetent, uninformed, foolish, confused, too soft, and . . . unlucky. When his team begins to win, he is suddenly shrewd, hardworking, clever, careful, talented, and . . . lucky. You can be criticized, but not discouraged. You can de- feat his team, but you can't make him quit. You can take him out of a game, but you can’t take him out of basketball. He is a hard working, untiring, stubborn kid, doing the very best he can for his coach and his team. And when you leave the gym grouchy and upset because your team has lost, he can make you feel ashamed with just two sincerely spoken words — WE TRIED . CONCERT CHOIRS Few music lovers remain satisfied with only physical contact with music. With the physical you miss the fascinat- ing inner world of a piece of music, the intricate meshing of the voices and instruments. Many people enjoy music instinctively and want to be able to tell others why. To be able to do so in the vocabulary of music gives us pleasure. For the second year in a row, the band was asked to play at the public landing for the arrival of the Delta Queen. This year the arrival was televised on the Nick Clooney Show, and the band was fortunate enough to have its own spot in the program. At contest the band received four ones (ex- cellent ratings) marking as outstanding per- formance. They played numerous concerts, such as the annual pancake day and Instrument- al Varieties which were both well received. Green Band (BELOW, LEFT TO RIGHT) 1st ROW: P. Watson, B. The rain post- ponements definitely had their effect on the results. A most diasppointing start turned into a strong finish which saw the Aviators defeat Deer Park, the league champions, twice and advance to the second round in the tourna- ment before losing a tough ball game to Finneytown. All in all the season was frus- trating but rewarding because of the dedicated work of the entire team (they never gave up). Hard work, many miles of practice-these make the dedicated runner a champion. 1973-a year of surprises and a shattering climax. Off to a slow start - literally and physically. Accidents take their toll, but coaches come up with a few sur- prises to fill the gaps. Lockland, Reading Invitational, and the E.H.L. is here already. Brilliant all-around efforts, brilliant strategy, and the E.H.L. Track title is back at Syca- more after a two-year absence. GOLF Golf at Sycamore is a team sport made up of four boys. Each has a chance to win two points for the team. There is also an extra point for team total, making a total of nine points possible. The team had a 10 win-9 loss record in match playing. This year's team tied for fourth place in the E. H. L.; low aver- age golfer was sophomore Doug Orewiles. Varsity Golf Team (ABOVE LEFT TO RIGHT) FRONT ROW: Rick Hake, Jim Decker, Dan Clem- ents. BACK ROW: Coach Emerson, Doug Orewiles, Greg Acomb, Jim Reuter. First time in Sycamore's History that we've won the league. Jeff Moore was undefeated in the league! Steve Zaeh and Chuck Zaeh (both re- turning) won the sectional, made it to the semi-finals in the District and qualified for State where they were defeated in the first round by Akron Firestone 6-3, 2-6, 6-7. Jeff Moore made it to the semifinals in the Sectional and qualified for the Dis- trict where he was eliminated. The team lost four seniors Mike, Jeff, Steve, and Al, but will be very strong next year, with both Zaehs returning. The first place in the league that the tennis team won was very im- portant in helping Sycamore win its second straight award. From the Duke of Earl to hairspray commercials, the enter- tainers kept the audience laughing. The faculty especially enjoyed the Lettermen's return to the 50's. Over all, the assem- bly was a success and will be well remembered. DESIDERATA h CO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE AND HASTE, AND REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAY BE IN SILENCE. As far as possible|without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly clearly; and listen to others, even the dull ignorant; they too have their story. A- void loud aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain' bitter; for always there will he greater lesser persons than yourself. jEnjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however hum- s'hie; it is a real possession in the changing for- 1 tunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let •(his not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere lift is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity discnchant- 1 Liv ment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the , counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sue ’den misfortune. But do not dis- tress yourself with fatigue loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. There- fore he at peace with Cod, whatever you conceive Him to he, and whate ver your labors aspirations in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery broken £ I dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to lie happy. MAX FHRMANN 1927 by Max Ehrmann; All rights reserved. What a hassle, right! Well, the friendly Southern Ohio people offer something better something that's with it for their savings customers. So. efficient Southern Ohio Bank converted to computer programming for regular savings accounts with interest compounded daily from the day of deposit to the day of withdrawal at a current rate of 4Vfe%. Southern Ohio put an end to only compounding quarterly interest and those nasty machine posted passbook entries And so you wouldn't become uptight, they devised a handy checkbook size deposit withdrawal slip which you simply hand the teller when you transact business . it's just not a drag anymore The computer updates your account and issues a quarterly statement beginning February 1. 1973. showing all deposits and withdrawals and interest activity for the previous 3-month period With the computerization of savings accounts, this for real banking story has only just begun, but already has a moral (strictly for your personal interest).
