We hope these footsteps made dur- ing the parade of our past years at Sycohi will lead us to a brighter future. Our ad- ministrators and faculty have set fine ex- amples for the students to follow, always searching for knowledge and a brighter Way of life. Our footsteps, parallel with the footsteps of former classmates, have led us to many lasting and enduring friendships. Our paths have led up through years of useful and exciting group activities. Our past has led up over the solid ground of education. Now there is a lighted path be- fore us. . . Though We were well subdued at first, . We soon were in a maze Of studies, sports, and things to do That left us in a daze. As our experience increased And friendships multiplied, We spent more time on school functions, Made other-s step aside. Music contests, dances, movies, Basket and football games, Classes, field trips, assemblies, too, And many more to name. Though we've not always taken part Or done what's rated best, The contributions that we've made Have added to the rest. As We move on and separate, Our places 'here are Hlled By boys and girls who, like us, strive Minds and bodies to build. Our motto: To recall the pastg Rightly to live todayg To hold the vision clear for all Of a new and brighter way. -John Jordan 23 4 Classes R. Willis, K. Waller B. Mundy, B. Thompson Copycats? High School Band Much of the inspiration of our school spirit is brought about by the Syca- more High School Band, which is com- posed of about fifty-five members this year. During the past year they have par- ticipated in many activities. Their unique half--time presentations during the foot- ball season were very entertaining and appreciated by everyone. The band also contributed a great deal to the entertain- ment at the basketball games. The band participated in the annual Christmas Concert and in the gala Spring Concert. 46 Many long hours of practice Were spent by each band member in preparation for the District Music Contest in Batavia. They received an excellent rating for their effort. Individual members also entered the solo and ensemble division of the con- test held on an earlier date. Among other activities, highlights of the band's performances were their par- ticipation in the Sycamore Homecoming and Memorial Day parades. Mr. Brand is to be congratulated for his time and effort in advising and instruct- ing each member of this organization. Organizations E l Row 1: J. Swedberg, J. Jordan, L. Hoirnan, B. Haka. The Spar- tans got OH to a fast start by beating Sandwich 27 to 6. They concluded the season with a six won and three loss record. Four of these wins were against conference competition, enabling the Spartans to finish the season in a tie for third place. During the season, many boys received special recognition. Among these were Tedford, Hodge, Quinn, Trapp, Hagen and Thompson. Dick Hardesty and Bob Thompson were chosen the co-captains of this year's team. Bud Quinn was elected the most valuable player of the team and received the Cassius Conrad Trophy. We had an excellent team this season and we only hope that the teams of future seasons will be as successful as this one was. Sycamore 27 ....... ...... S andwich 6 Sycamore 20 ...... .... Although they got off to a rather poor start, they pro- gressed rapidly into a promising team. The team seemed to have a phobia for losing games by one point. In fact they lost four games by that heartbreaking point. The boys in the line were of consider- able size and proved to be very helpful in winning games. There were several promising freshmen on the squad who will be of great value next year. The remaining sophomores will graduate to the varsity squad. We appreciate the time and eEort the boys have put forth for the sport. SCORES Sycamore .......................... Sandwich 0 Sycamore ...... ..... R ochelle 13 Sycamore ..... The importance of good sportsmanship and team spirit were especially stressed. The boys were of small size, but they made up for this lack by their fighting spirit' and enthusiasm. This asset proved to be very valuable this year and will help them extensively in their future years at Sycohi. Many of these boys will be welcomed to the high school team next year and Athletics the remaining underclassmen will have another year of training before they compete in high school athletics. Varsity Basketball The Sycamore High School heavyweight basketball team, under the direction of Lee Mathes, demonstrated excellent abil- ity and displayed their knowledge of good sportsmanship. Good performances in- cluded the Freeport and Wheaton upsets and the game probably most' highly ap- preciated by the fans, the DeKalb slaugh- ter. Under the leadership of co-captains Joe Schmitt and Bud Quinn, the Spartans be- gan their 22 game schedule on November 26, by beating Dixon. Coach Mathes' usual starting line-up was as follows: Trapp and Ernest forwards, Quinn and Schmitt, guards, and Hardestry at center. Hodge saw some action, despite injuries, and was a boost to the team spirit. Ernest and Schmitt were elected the most val- uable players this season. The first few games were marked by a heart breaker at the hands of DeKalb, later avenged, and a relatively short ap- pearance in the Annual Invitational Holi- day Tournament at N .I.S.T.C. Kirkland cut short any hope the Spartans may have had of reaching the finals. Going into the last part of the season the Spartans defeated Dundee to join the We Beat Dundee Club , therefore be- came one of the few Sycohi teams not to be defeated twice by the same team in one season. The team finished third in the Little Seven Conference. Next year's team will be without the seniors, who constituted four of the first five. However, there are many excellent boys and some good prospects moving up from Coach Johnson's ranks. We think of the past season as a successful one, but We look to the future for a more success- ful basketball season. 1 Afhleiics Franklin Binder Terry Ernest Lowell Evans Steve George Dick Hagen Dick Hardesty Pete Hodge Jim Lee Bud Quinn 74 Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Sycamore Afhlefics Varsity Record Dixon 55 Rochelle 54 .. ..... This necessitated two teams, the regular team and the freshman squad. This was done in order that all of the boys would get a chance to play. This year was quite successful in the won and lost column and therefore they finished third in the Little Seven Confer- ence race. The boys also participated in the Belvidere tournaments again. They lost in the initial race to DeKalb, but won the consolation bracket by defeating E. Aurora. As captain of the team, Marshall Carpenter, on behalf of the team, pre- sented their trophy to Mr. Shrout at the award assembly. The two DeKalb tangles will not be for- gotten by anyone for quite a while. Sycohi lost the first meet by one heart- breaking point. but later avenged this loss by defeating the Barblets by 16 points. Although they were again defeated by DeKalb in the tournaments, their three wins overshadowed their loss. We are very proud of the boys for their come- back. Jim Foster will be remembered by many a team as the giant from Syca- more. Bert Fredrick was another of the outstanding members of the Spartlets. Both of these boys will be back again next year to supplement the team on their road to victory. Captain Marshall Car- penter was noted for being a good shot and rebounderg Larry Ross was fast and good on defensive workg and Bob Fergu- son had team spirit and was a play maker. These three along with others will be greatly missed, but' we look forward to seeing them on the varsity next year. The rest of the team should be com- mended for their fine work to help become a winning team. They all tried hard and we couldn't have accomplished anything without their support and backing. They showed a great amount of pep and enthusiasm throughout the en- tire season. Also evident was some skill which will aid next year's eighth grade and, we hope, future high school teams. The team was made up of boys who wanted to learn the fundamental skills of the game so that they will qualify for high school activities. - It was partly their desire to learn that helped them to do so we . They started the season by beating Genoa twice by over-whelming scores. Aihleiics However, a defeat by a taller Belvidere team followed. They avenged this defeat and squeezed past the Bucs in probably their best game by a thrilling 21 to 17 score. Then, back in their old form, they pushed past Kirkland and Malta by large margins.
