It was September of the year 1953 when our intrepid group made its first prominent appearance at the gates of Swoyerville High. Immediately the title Freshman was bestowed upon each member denoting he was accepted as a part of a prodigious group of High School scholars. All were aware of the honorable reputation established by their predecessors and made every attempt to live up to his namesake. At first the journey seemed difficult and treacherous but with the aid of the apparently infinite wisdom of their teachers, each gradually became aware of the pitfalls that hampered their progress and mastered each of these with adroit skill. There are many minor occurrences which must go unrecorded although they were very important in- fluences in the physical and mental development of the Freshmen of '53. The dauntless freshmen of '53 were no more. ln- stead they had now developed into a unique group of sagacious sophomores. The memories of the trial and error days of the year before were vividly in the minds of everyone. Having their classes conducted in the high school building itself greatly increased the feeling of being an integral part of Swoyerville High. They found themselves striving to act maturely as they were able in order to correspond with the demure actions of their upperclassmen. Many began to partici- pate in school activities. Some were beginning to show promise in sports and others became active members of the Key Club. All of the girls were given the privileged opportunity of being the first Swoyerville Sophomores ever to be initiated into the Y-Teens. A few of the more vivacious girls were immediately accepted as cheerleaders. One of the most memorable events which occurred during that year was the highly successful excursion to Ricketts Glen. These were some of the incidents which made it quite apparent that the Sophomore class of '54 would more than live up to expectations. Now, well versed in the rules and traditions of Swoyerville High, as Juniors, we start our third year of learning. Class officers are elected who would lead us capably through the year. President, Joseph Con- iglio, Vice President, Joseph Oleinick, and Dolores Konopka, Secretaryi New subiects confuse some of us but not for long. Many students take the secretarial course with such subjects as shorthand and book- keeping, while the academics become acquainted with chemistry, geometry and Spanish. In no time at all we are in full swing. Our athletes are being History recognized as great players and our girls have really made a place for themselves. This is the year we are privileged to attend the Junior-Senior Banquet, at Hotel Sterling, and we felt like millionaires. As we travel on through the year we share many reward- ing experiences which help to make a foundation for our future success in life. Soon in the spring, we chose our class rings, feeling all the nearer to our goal - graduation. After Easter we had a grand time at the Junior-Senior prom and now our third year has quickly drawn to a close with the realization that, ln Septem- ber, we will be Seniors. At last, mighty Seniors are we! Quite ready to attack any problem that may confront us. This year we are led by our co-chairmen, Joseph Coniglio and Joseph Chipego wth Gerald O'Donnell, our treasurer, and Loretta Songaila, our Secretary. They were aided by a capable senior committee. ln studies we meet new obstacles but managed to surmount them intelligently. ln October we embarked on our first Senior trip to the Dorrance Colliery, not a very distant point-in fact only across the river, but it was a very enlightening ex- perience. Next we visit Harrisburg, our beautiful state capitol, and Gettysburg, that memorial battleground. We return home and wait anxiously for our next trip which will take us to New York. We will never forget these adventures which will be in our minds forever. Others may come and go but these memories will always remain with us. Our football players this year attained fame as the State Eastern Conference Foot- ball Champions, a well-deserved reward for the great- est team in the valley. We must not forget our basket- ball and baseball players or the other boys and girls that did not take part in sports-they all did much to up- hold the name of Swoyerville High School. With our successful and entertaining minstrel and play behind us, we continue on our way through the remainder of the year. At last Class Night and Commencement loom on the horizon. Ah! Graduation, our cherished dreams have come true. A ioyous occasion but also a rather sad one. We must leave most of our old friends and teach- ers, seeing them only occasionally. Never may we return as students. It is an ending and a beginning - the end of studies, for most of us, and a beginning of life, for all of us. A beginning of life in a world which will not always be kind, but, we all hope, a life that will be rewarding for the Seniors of l957.
