Our first thoughts are those of only yesterday,- Of class night, the prom, the banquet and our senior play. The months passed, as did the minstrel and senior trips, While words of both wisdom and wit, passed through our lips. Happy memories of youth-like these, were made. Never to be relivedg yet never to fade. With saddened hearts we travel to yesteryear, When as the Junior Class, we did appear. Considered upperclassmen, we strove to meet the test, We studied, we laughed, that year was one of the best. The year of 1953, as Sophomores, was a fleeting one, Though knowledge we sought, each day was filled with fun. We missed not a game nor a dance all year, Because we were youthful Sophomores with nothing to fear. We could hardly forget September of '52-that very first day- When as Freshmen, we stumbled to find the way. Now teachers were met, new friendships were found, We were now on the road and graduation bound. We cannot go back to the world we so loved and knew, To open the door, to succeed, is the aim of our young crew. Today-our goal is near in sight! Weave crossed the barriers, we've won the fiht. As we bid farewell to friends who will seldom mix- We pray that God will always guide this, the Class of '56! Our teachers who have helped us share, The hardships that we had to bear, We will have these school days to remember. As we receive diplomas, we know we must never sigh, Locked in us are the mem'ries of the years that have gone by. At last we know, we,re on our way, We pray that God be near each day, Class of 956 now hids, fond farewell. Time passes: suddenly the cry stal begins to clear and slowly an image appears-a group of timid students in the halls of Swoyeryille High School, the future Class of 1956. ln September. 1952. we were embarking upon a high school career, shy, but determined to do our best to acliieye a common goal-GRADUATION. Very often we walked up or down the wrong steps and caused a lot of confusion, or forgot the room number and wandered through the halls timidly until we found our room. This year found us wise, proud and eager to learn. Anxious and ath- letically-minded boys were given the opportunity to try out for basketball and football. Our subjects were more difficult. Slowly this scene fades from view and is replaced by another. Here the Class of 1956 is seen making new friends. and, others are sep- arated, some having classes at the Cahalan Building and others at the high school. ln our Sophomore year, the boys won their berths on the athletic teams and the girls were trying out for positions on the cheerleading and majorette squads. Others join the school band and orchestra. Our field trip to Ricketts Glen was a happy and memorable experience. chaperoned by Mr. Michael Beky. lVlr. John Wallace and lVlr. ,loseph Gulla. As the latter scene disappears. another is visualized-This time as Juniors, their goal is getting nearer. A group of students is seen, in a classroom- everyone is still, tense- then a hand is seen slowly rising, followed by its owner, who says, HI nominate Joseph lVlargallisfl And the election of officers takes place. The final results of the election: Joseph Margallis, ljresidentg John Hudick, Vice Presidentg Valeria Skrabut, Secretaryg and Jeanne Kara- lunas, Treasurer. The girls are allowed to join the Y-Tcensg the boys are admitted to the ranks of the varsity teamsg and we are the honored guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Near the close of this year comes an event which we looked forward to as much as graduation-the choosing of class rings which we would wear as a symbol of promotion to the last and final year. This scene is slowly replaced by another-entering Swoyerville High School as highly-heralded seniors, and standing upon the threshold of our final high school year, we seem somewhat sad and apprehensive of what the future holds. But soon, fears are lost in a whirl of activities, work and happi- ness. Clearly showing at the beginning of the year is football, our leading sport. To us, our fine team may be called the uncrowned champions of Wyoniing Valley. 7 if W... X October found us on our way to a delightful day at Harrisburg. touring our State Capitol, and solemnly reviewing the great battle of Gettysburg, under the capable direction of our class advisors. Miss Angeline Cacciatore and Mrs. Margaret Puhak, accompanied by Mr. George Shendock and Mr. John Wfallace. Also during this month a field trip to the Dorrance Colliery was made and we had the opportunity to go down into the mine which was a very interesting experience. Before leaving the vicinity, we toured the Luzerne County Prison. Election of class officers took place and the results were: Walter Andrze- jewski, President, Joseph Hawk, Vice President, Agatha Olejnik, Secretary, and Patricia Buscavage, Treasurer. The Tattler Staff, composed of fellow classmates, completed the first issue. John Pisaneschi, editor, was assisted by Arlene Cajdo, Ellenrose Govier and Marilyn McGuire, plus a staff of seniors, under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Puhak. Our annual minstrel, under the direction of Mr. John Matte. was a great success and helped bring out the acting abilities of some of our classmates. Our interlocutor, Thomas Hoosic, did a fine job assisted by capable endmen. Next into view is the Junior-Senior banquet held on February 1, where we were hosts to the Junior class. Then on February 29 and March 1, the play, under the direction of Mr. John Wallace, assisted by Madelyn Katrainak and Janet Runchka, was as successful as the minstrel, with new talent being displayed in the hill-billy setting of 'GA-Feuding Over Yonder. Before the crystal blurs, it is April and we are off to a grand and glorious day in New York accompanied by our class advisors. Then-GRADUATION-The goal that once seemed far and unattainable appears in a blinding light. Soon commencement day will be here and we will have reached the apex of our youth. Slowly the ball becomes dim, the light fades and the spell is broken. What lies ahead cannot be seen! We now must step out into the world to make our Way, not as a class working together for one goal, but as individuals Working alone, striving to achieve many goals of our own. We shall always remember and cherish those happy eventful years. We, The Class of 1956, have seen the past, and the future-remains to be seen.
