Volume I Switzerland County Jr.-Sr. H.S. Vevay, Indiana sometimes it’s people. At one time or another during the 1977-78 school year, most of the stu- dents at S.C.H.S. will have expressed a dislike for something about the school. It may have been catching the bus early, the cafeteria's food, the faculty, or even the administration. However, there came a time when each and every student felt a tinge of senti- mentality-perhaps when the last se- nior received his diploma at gradua- tion, or a sense of loyalty when the girls basketball team won an important game, or the choir competing in Nash- ville, Tennesse. This was when the stu- dent realized that this was the school which helped him to reach goals al- ready past and was now helping him to prepare for the things to come. Yes, we hated it, but we loved it! The elements vary from year to year, but each leaves his own unique impression and con- tributions. From an accumulation of these indelible marks evolves the character of a high school, giving Switzerland County a per- sonality all its own. The year, because of the students, took on a personality also, a feeling that expressed itself in many ways. It is the school year 1977-78. 5 Reflections of the Past Senior Matt Dusch heads for Government Seventh Graders show their powers of concentration as they complete their Math exam. Class. Sandy South was chosen Queen of the 1977 Aurora Farmer’s Fair. She shared honors with Xing Scott Good of Aurora High School. The Yearbook Staff wishes to congratulate Sandy on her accomplish- ment. This years annual Pumpkin Show consisted of the Queen Contest, Pa- rade, and many rides and games. Daniele Tolbert was elected by her fellow class- men to represent the Senior Class. Also from Switzerland County was Senior Donna Scott, representing S.l.V.S. Queen candidates from nine other area High Schools participated in the con- test. Taking the honors as 1977 Queen, was the Milan entry. The Senior Class would like to thank Daniele and Donna for a job well done. Advance Sales Are Strongest in Years This year the Switzerland County Junior-Senior High School Yearbook, “Reflections” will contain more pages than ever before. The increase in length is largely due to the increased number of activities taking place during the school year. Among these new activities are such events as Girl’s Basketball, Track, Volleyball and the related candid photo- graphs of the girls as they participate in these events. Our editor, Tammy Hensley and Co-Editor, Karen Allan point out that student support is the key to keeping our yearbook an integral part of our high school program. They also noted that extra copies will be available this Fall when the books arrive and will be distributed on a “first come, first served” basis. Overall, the production of the 1978 book involved many tedious hours of hard work and concentration and it is the hope of the entire staff that these efforts will please the en- tire student body. Again the staff wishes to thank all stu- dents and advertisers for their support of “Reflections ’78.” S.C.H.S. The Oracle Gains Popularity with Introduction of Special Issues The Switzerland County High School “Oracle” gained a new advisor this year, Mr. John Druba. Denny Crandell, the editor was invaluable to Mr. Druba as Denny brought with him experience gained from serving on the stafflast year. The entire staff was very effective since there was a great amount of cooperation among all staff members as they pre- pared each issue. Mr. Druba was well pleased with the perfor- mance of the staff and hopes that most will be able to return next year. During the year the Oracle Staff published two special issues covering school activities including Drama Club and Homecoming. Student response to both issues was over- whelming and because of demand similar issues are being planned for the coining year. 17 S.C.H.S. It should be thought of as the voca- tional-technical department of all the high schools who regu- larly send students there. Vocational education is based on the concept that to be good in an occupation the individual must “know how” to do the tasks that are required in the occupation.’ The worker must also “know why” he does the tasks in the particular way that they are done. At the Vocational School, both the “know how” and the “know why” are taught. Students attend the school approximately three periods each day. During the time the students attend the school, about one-third, or one period, per day is spent in learning the “know why”. The other two-thirds of the time is spent in practical shop or laboratory work. A variety of programs are being offered so that there will be as much available as possible, to as many students as possi- ble, regardless of their interest and aptitudes. In most pro- grams, students attend during their junior and senior years of high school. Over the years, instructors at the Southeastern Indiana Vocational School have enjoyed excellent relationships with their students. Instructors take personal pride in the achieve- ment of their students, both while they are at the school and after they leave the school and are successful at their jobs. 1977-78 Vocational School Students Row 1 Henry Fuller, Glenn Leap, Wyatt Self. The show was very successful and well attended by students and citizens of Switzerland County. “Showboat” featured ten major soloists and forty chorus and cast members. It required two pianoists and a drummer for accompaniment. It also required a very extensive and complicated stage. The story is about a river boat captain who has a showboat named the Cotton Blossom, and performs at different towns along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. He finds himself in trouble however, when it becomes known that one of his stars is of mixed blood racially. The captain spends the remainder of the story trying to replace the various actors and actresses in his show in order to keep his boat in business. The captain’s wife seems to dampen his spirits when she at- tempts to stop his using his own daughter in the show. Best Actor and Best Actress awards went to John Spencer as “Joe” and Ton- ya Andrew as “Mrs. Andy Hawks.” Seniors present “The Storm” and “Barefoot in the Park,” Cast Members—Seated: Lisa DeNoon, Dennis Scudder, Connie Lane, Doug Lane. The audience en- joyed the performance tremendously, as it dealt with usual everyday happenings. 39 Junior Class Cast and Crew of “Harvey” Row 1: Lisa Smith, Mark Ar- cher, Diana Cole, Wyatt Self, Debbie Coates, Denny Cran- dell, Sandy Rowland; Row 2: Malcolm Markland, Brian Os- borne, Linda Bcnnitt, Cynthia Carpenter, Ricky Wolf, Tonya Andrew, Teresa Jones, Jeff Harsin, Melinda Patterson, Mr. Beckett-Director; Row 3: Brian Jones, Fred Johnson, Linda Higgins, John Sieglitz, Jim Waltz. 40 Presents “Harvey” Tonya Andrew shows surprise at the sight of Harvey. They were very willing to try new plays. The team is losing two seniors this year, Nancy Ball and Brenda VanTyle. They are players that will be missed, but the team should be extremely strong next year as the rest of the girls on the varsity have worked together all this season. Mrs Weaver is looking forward to all girls returning and hopefully some other Freshman and Sophomores will join the teams next year. 65 Girl’s Varsity Basketball Team Girls Varsity Team : Manager Sharon Brown, Karen Allan, Janet Hall, Debbie Carlow, Statistician Michelle Keith; Standing: Debbie Berner, Arlene Schrocder, Sandy Rowland, Diana Cole, Samantha Bramer, Karen Whitham, Coach Miss Barbara Steffan. Season Best Ever The S.C.H.S. Girls Varsity Team had a very outstand- ing season this year. Their record was 9-3, being third place in the conference. This record is the best ever achieved since Girl’s basketball has been in existence at Switzerland County. Most of the credit goes to Coach Barbara Steffan but of course she couldn’t have done it without very talented athletes to work with. Three outstanding juniors and two very promising sophomores made up the starting five. Relief work was provided by many other capable juniors and sophomores who were required to play many positions during the season. The Girls team was runner-up in the Rising Sun Tour- nament and runner-up in the girl’s sectional at East Cen- tral High School. In addition, Karen Allan and Samantha Bramer were among local players who were named to the All Conference Team. 66 Have Another Winning Season 67 J.V. At this point you probably expect to see a whole bunch of percentage figures for this type of savings program or for that type of savings program. Well, we aren’t going to give a lot of interest percentages. We're not going to launch into a monologue about saving this or that every payday. In short, we’re not going to con- fuse you. What we are suggesting is that you treat your savings program like a business. Seek the best advice you can on how much to invest and in what manner you can best in- vest.
