Seasons of ’75 Volume I Table of Contents: I ntroduction..........4 School Life...........11 Sports................50 Faculty...............70 Seniors...............82 I Am a Student at S.C.H.S. The essential ingredient of a high school is ultimately its students. The elements vary from year to year, but each leaves his own unique impression and contribution. From an accumulation of these indelible marks, evolves the character of a high school, giving Switzerland County High a personality all its own. The year, because of the students, took on a personality also, a feeling that expressed it- self in many ways. This Is Our School . . . This Was Our Year . . . About Learning . . . Knowledge for some is greater than for others because they have read more, looked more, thought more, experienced more and just lived more.. .if you will take the time and do a little extra, your life will be much fuller. 6 Expressions Silence Is Golden! Life Is . . . something very beautiful, a chance to explore, gather knowledge, express yourself and have fun. 9 10 Art Club TheS.C.H.S. Students picked up their dates and journeyed to Switzerland County High School to begin the festivities. With a Hawaiian flair, decorations were placed both in the cafeteria and gymnasium. It was a memorable evening for everyone--especially the Senior Class of 1975. Special thanks is to be given to the Junior Class and their sponsor, Mr. Montgomery, for a job well done. Ap- preciation is also extended to the Switzerland County Class- room Teachers’ Association for the delicious meal they prepared. King Bill and Queen Sharon dance to their song. Mr. and Mrs. Cord enjoy prom refreshments. 23 24 Faces reveal good times among everyone. Vibrant music readily draws the attention of the prom goers. The evening was as bright and glittering as the theme suggests. Of course the very special part of the evening was the crowning of the 1975 Prom King and Queen. 2S 26 27 Yearbook Staff: Sharon Valentine, Mike Flinn, Ted Conlon, Rahe Jean Furnish, Brenda Johns, Lonna Gulley, Renne Dunn, Jamie Stev- Y earhook Staff Aurora Farmer's Fair Candidates; Nancy Ritch and Kevin Senate Pages (1-r) Sharon Valentine, Renne Dunn, Rita Mor- Craig. ton. 29 National Honor Society Row 1, 1-r: D. Days revolving around classes, friends and activities . . . days of expectation, frustration and endless satisfaction. Today they take with them a diploma earned with the guidance, education and accomplishments of their years at SCHS . . . but also the friendships and memories of their alma mater. Each step of the procession leads to the end that is like all ends, a step toward a new beginning. Commencement 35 Class of “75” A Night of Mixed Emotions Salutatorian, Lisa Rosenberger Valedictorian, James Baker Superintendent Hall gives his speech of encouragement. The Finality of it all! Commencement--a time of happiness and sadness. Realizing that togetherness at class parties, ballgames, and activities is over, but look- ing expectantly to the future, confident in its promises. And so it is: Today, the first day of the rest of our lives! Some graduates listen attentively, others say, I made it, so let's get out of here! Graduation puts the cap on 12 years of hard work. Without each other our experiences would have been meaningless. We found that necessary sense of belonging in the company of our friends. Laughing and sharing, we came to depend on our peers for honest opinions. Remembering the good times, we can pause to realize that we are, indeed, a part of every- thing we touch. We have crossed the bay, now the ocean lies before us, an expanse of varying temperament where sailing craft can float or capsize. On the ocean there will be no breakers of parents and teachers to shelter one. Winds, waves, storms, and turmoil will be faced with the knowledge gained from the past. During this outing we have merely been learning and practicing techniques to stay afloat. Now the test of our gathered knowledge has arrived. 37 Living for Today Reaching for Tomorrow The Graduating Class of ’75 Bows Out To the Oncoming Class of ’76. Graduates, friends, and parents embrace after graduation. The Final Steps of High School, the Beginning of a New Life. The faces of the night were proud parents, relieved teachers, and thrilled graduates! The bodies were there. The thoughts were far in the future. 39 Seniors ... a Laugh, Smile, a Tear . . . Homecoming 1975 The spirit of S.C.H.S. was unique. It ran as a current through every facet of our activities--from the boys locker room to the quiet of the library and on to the disorder of a club meeting. It was reflected in the faces of teachers, coaches, students, and the royalty of our special person; Queen Sharon Valentine. Homecoming 1975 carried the spirit of a gener- ation--ours. 41 Queen Candidates: V. Backer, N. Rltch, A. Lamson, L. McKay. Row 2: K. Carfield, D. Minch, B. May, M. Cole, K. Whybrew. Row 3: V. S.C.H.S. Golf—1975 Coach Wayne Daugherty, Mark White, Dale Keith, Kent Deaton, Mike Archer, Tony Hankins, Gary Pavy. Mike Archer and Dale Keith were All-Conference golfers for the 74-75 season. Golf was added to the athletic program in the school year of 74-75. The team had seven meets, winning three, and finishing second in the other four. Our team placed fourth in the conference meet at Madison which was very commendable af- ter having participated for only one season. Team members on the first team were Mike Archer, Kent Deaton, Greg Deaton, Tony Hankins, Dale Keith, Gary Pavy, and their coach was Wayne Daugherty, This year's team was composed of Mike Archer, Kent Deaton, Greg Deaton, Mike FI inn, Mark White, Tony Hankins, Dale Keith, and Gary Pavy. Their coach again was Mr. Daugherty. Our team won six meets and finished second in three others. Our team came from fourth place in last year’s conference meet to second this year which was our second year of golf. At this time three players are competing for the M.V.P. Award. Dale Keith leads Mike Archer by .2 of a stroke and Kent Deaton by 1.5 stroke. The winner will be decided in our spring season. 51 Cross Long Distance Runners Varsity Cross-Country Runners, Left to right: Dennis Carr, Giles Andrew, Rick Curry, Randy Ricketts, Joe McManis, Marvin Covington. Cross-Country Team, coached by Bemie Burk, made strong showings throughout the season. In the O.R.V.C. meet S.C.H.S. placed 4th, very close in points to the winning Jac-Cen-Del team. Danny Flood placed 5th and Terry Peters 8th to win all-conference honors. Other strong runners for Switzerland County were Eddie Johnson, Dennis Carr, Brian Kloss, Nor- man Earls, and Marvin Covington. Coach Burk was not displeased with his team's performance because they were a young team com- posed of several Freshmen and Sophomores, with Norman Earls, Rick Curry, and Mark Lohide being the only Seniors. Coach Burk commented that as a team S.C.H.S. Cross-Country should be very strong in the near future . S.C.H.S. It's just hard to express the feelings that went through all of us when that final buzzer rang and we knew we were the 1975 Sectional Champs. After an exciting neck and neck game between Aurora and Switz County, with an overtime, the final score ended with the Pacers on top 50 to 47. After all the losses and troubles in the season, it was worth it, and it was something that will not be forgotten. 54 The Pacers cheer as Greg cuts Jown the net! Sectional Champs Are Back The smiles and feelings of victory! We’re No. 1 55 Then, “On to the Regional’’ Bill reaches for a rebound. It was the first time in 17 years that the Switz. Co. team made it to the Regional. All the players on the team were so exci- ted at the thought of just being there that when it came to the point of playing the game, the players were still thinking Sec- tional instead of Regional and did not show the fans the ability they really possessed. a It's a scramble for the ball. Row 2: Bill Peelman, Kent Deaton, Deward Devers, Greg Deaton, Steve Sebree, Terry Turner, Coach-- Bernie Burk. The first half of the basketball season, the Pacers were lacking some of their most valuable players and it showed in the way they played. Toward the second half of season the Pacers started out with a whole new display of power due to the fact that many of the players who had been out with injuries were able to return and more boys became eligible to play second semester. It was proven that the Pacers were one of the more powerful teams in the area when they de- feated the Aurora Red Devils for the sectional crown. This was extremely satisfying to the Pacer players and fans due to the fact Aurora had defeated the Pacers by 23 points earlier in the season at the pit. Some of these proj- ects were: sculpturing, ceramics, mobiles, oil painting, figure drawing, yarn wall hangings and many other interesting assignments. Some art students were responsible for the colorful posters and banners seen around the school and at basket- ball games, which greatly boosted school spirit. 64 It is here in the classroom that we become aware of the complexity of this world and how we must prepare ourselves to meet it. We read, we study, we learn and we grow with each new fact. The fate of men in the past, the present state of time, and the mystery of the future all becomes real to us, as we endeavor to understand, to cope with, and to solve. 65 67 Scrubbing the soup pot for another meal at S.C.H.S.
