Among these were the entrance with the FFA in the Halloween float contest, bringing Christi mas cheer to various county nursing homes along with the choir sponsored by Mr. Hughes. Also, the Mother and Daughter Banquet proved quite a success plus many other community service projects. Betty Crocker Award—Vicki Otter 71 FH A Club Officers Plays Presented By Students Drama Club The Switzerland County High School Drama Club consists of various mem- l ers grades 9 through 12. The club at- tempts to provide both entertainment and cultural achievement for the com- munity. The Fall play was a production of the drama “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder. Although still in its youth the Drama Club is growing and learning fast and hopes to reach out to more stu- dents in the future. 72 Ait Club Stresses Student Talents 73 CHOIR HAS JOYOUS YEAR The high school choir has had an enjoyable year with Mr. Larry Hughes as conductor. During the year, choir members entertained patients at the Silver Bell Nursing Home near Versailles and at the Madison State Hospital in cooper- ation with the Tri-Kappa Sorority. They also provided entertainment for the fall style show held at the community building. They presented the National Anthem at one home ballgame. Two concerts were presented with the Jr. High and Sr. High bands, one was presented at Christmas and one in the Spring. The Switzerland County choir again participated in the Ohio Valley Choral Festival which this year was held at Jeffersonville. Choir and Band Support Music Club 7% GAA Buikls Athletic Abilities The Girls' Athletic Association provides an intramural program for girls during the entire school year. In the fall softball is the main sport. Basketball practices and games are a popular sport in the winter. Bowling is another of the enjoyable contests. Each inductee was selected on the basis of several things besides scholarship. These students must show outstanding character- istics of leadership, service, and character in order to become possible members of the society. Morton We started the year with a very successful bake sale, nominated Doris Coy to represent as for Homecoming Queen, collected many boxes of toys, games, and canned foods for needy families during the Christmas holi- days. Also, we attended a Spring Concert—Creedence Clearwater Revival, in Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 12, 1972. 80 Mr. Olson, sponsor of the Spanish club, dem- onstrates the language lab facilities. Newspaper Staff The Switzerland County Jr. Sr. High School Echo has been in existence for approximately one year. Each issue shows marked improvement in all areas and we are hoping soon to (ind a print shop which could print the paper for a nominal fee. Printing equipment would Ire both expensive and would require Nurses Club space which at the moment is not avail- able in the high school. We have also es- tablished the Michael L. Lamson award which will Ire given to an outstanding senior athlete. County High School band left the school at 12:30, made a circuit of Vevay and headed with 3 busses con- taining 88 members, 26 chaperones, and band director Tom Taylor and his wife for New Orleans. Travelling to Louisville, they hit interstate 65 and at the end of Ken- tucky Turnpike they made their first rest stop. At Bowling Green, Ken- tucky, they stopped for their first meal. After their meal, they prpceeded on schedule to Nashville, Tennessee, where they attended the Bill Anderson Country Western TV Show. After the show, they went to the Ramada Inn. On Friday morning bus trouble caused the band a 2'A hour departure delay, but it was enjoyed since some of the members got a tour of the cap- ital of Nashville. After entering New Orleans and a brief rest, the band had an l‘A hour bus tour of the city. One thing of most interest to the band was the cemetaries. Due to low land and high water levels, the bodies are interred above the ground. Also, the tour showed the band the route it would march the following day. One of the other things the band enjoyed most about the parade was the friendliness of the people. The band members were very pleased when they pulled in front of the school to see the student body awaiting their arrival home. Intensive Listeners? 86 SCHS Teacher Honored Congratulations, Mr. Herron” High School teacher Mr. Dan Her- ron was nominated as a candidate for outstanding Biology teacher for the State of Indiana. This award is given annually by the Indiana Association of Biology Teachers. He was also chosen to have his record of accomplishments published in the 1972 edition of Leaders of American Secondary Education, which is a distinguished awards vol- ume, annually recognizing secondary school educators by honoring them for their outstanding contributions to lioth school and community. The Leaders of American Second- ary Education are selected by their own school administrators with first- hand knowledge of their faculty members’ endeavors and achievements. Educators selected for inclusion in the annual awards volume receive national reeongnition. They have met standards of excellence in their respective schools and have dis- tinguished themselves in the nation's secondary community. 87 STUDENT COUNCIL During the 1971-1972 school year, Student Council sponsored various activities. These included our Homecoming dance and queen contest, a Christmas con- vocation, an Easter egg hunt for the first four grades of Jefferson- Craig Elementary School and a student government day when two seniors occupied the positions of Principal and Vice Principal. Lock. 88 SELECTED STUDENTS Congratulations to Miss Diane Konkle, Junior at SCHS, as our repre- sentative to the Miss Indiana Teenager Contest, a preliminary of the National Teenager Pageant to be held this year in Atlanta, Georgia. The Indiana finals will lie at the Indianapolis Sheraton. Miss Konkle's sponsors are The Ath- letic Club, Tri Kappa Society, Kiwanis Club, and the Chamber of Commerce. The candidates will lie judged for their civic contributions, scholastic achieve- ments, personality and appearance. The eventual outcome will be scholarships to the winner and two runners up. The success story of Denny Rayls from a 9th grade green hand to a Senior and Hoosier Farmer was no accident. His goal of becoming a suc- cessful farmer was achieved by en- rolling in Vo. Ag. at the beginning freshman year, joining the FFA and being raised to a greenhand. He made chapter farmer the following year; and in June 20, 1972 he will re- cieve the third highest award of Hoo- sier Farmer Degree at Purdue Uni- versity. To achieve these awards he had to meet a standard of “C” or bet- ter in grades, have in operation a suc- cessful farming program, and lie a leader in FFA. He has at the present over $12,000 productively invested in his farm operation. 89 PICKIN' And TALKIN' Broadcasting Team At Right—Karen Thornton.
