The Diablos played fine football in the first half and held the Spartans to a small 7 to O lead. ln the third quarter, Chula Vista broke loose with 26 points to lead 33 to O before quarterback Bob Jordan pitched the Red Devils' first score into the hands of Ruben Dominquez, late in the period. ln the fourth period, Jordan again passed for a touchdown, this time to end Jim Gibbs, and Don Gentry added the conversion. With a Sweetwater safety, the score then read 33 to l5. Chula Vista went on to score twice in the fourth quarter and defeat the Red Devils, 46 to l5. EL CAJON vs SWEETWATER Sweetwater's Varsity football squad ended their i955 season on November l8, by clinch- ing third place in the Metro League with a sparkling 26 to l4 win over the El Cajon Braves on the Helix gridiron. Halfback Ruben Dominquez was the first to score when he plunged over in the first quarter to give the Red Devils an early lead. ln the second period, George McElvain went over from the two and Carl Hays scored the extra point on a line plunge to give the Diablos a l3 to 7 lead over the Braves at half time. On an early play in the third quarter, McElvain scored again, this time through the middle for Sl yards. Bill Walters ran over the extra point to put the Devils out in front, 20 to 7. The Braves scored again, only to be completely set back when McElvain turned in the play of the game with an 89 yard drive off tackle in the fourth period. The final score gave Sweetwater a 26 to I4 victory over EI Cajon. I Sweetwater Red Devils sing their school hymn after defeating El Cajon. San Diego area newspapers picked the Devils to win two and lose six in league play, and to tie El Cajon for the cellar. Predictions were based an the number of returning lettermen of each school and the past record. Coach Lee Shelmerdine told the team at the season's start that he would be pleased with a four win four loss record in league play this season considering the competition and returning players, He based this prediction on the fact that we were probably a year away, with juniors in many key positions anchored by only one good senior ball player in the person of Jimmy O'Brien. Our team's league record hit just between the two predictions, The Varsity won three and lost five in league play and finished ahead of El Cajon High in the standings. A great amount of improvement in team play was shown as the year wore an. All opposing coaches rated the Red Devils as the most dangerous team they had to face on a given night. Pre-season play saw the Devils drop their first five contests and then defeat St. Augus- tine 46-35 to break the spell. In the Kiwanis Holiday Tournament in San Diego the Devils did very well, going to the finals of the con- solation record, We lost to Brawley High 53- 35, slaughtered Mt. Empire 86-30, defeated a very strong Hemet High team 52-48 in an overtime game, and then dropped the consola- tion final to El Cajon High 48-41, after blow- ing a seven point third quarter to lead. After the holiday we dropped our final pre- season game to Lincoln High 5l-42. League play saw the Devils play great and poor basketball on alternate nights lsuch as any young team in competition might dol. Our record showed three convincing losses to open the league season to Grossmont 72-30, to Helix 79-50, and to Chula Vista 49-35. At this time the Devils found themselves and defeated El Cajon in a thriller 56-54. They followed this up with the Metro League up- set of the year win over the then undefeated Grossmont Foothillers 35-33 in one of the best basketball games Sweetwater has ever participated in, Jimmy O'Brien and Roger Lively led the scoring while Bob Beardsley played a great defensive game, holding Gross- mont's all-Metro forward, Williams, to four points. lt was a great team effort and the high spot of the Devils' season. Su-Hi defeated San Diego State College Frosh 52-33 in a special game during the year that saw Roger Lively score twenty-seven points ihis high for the seasonl. Helix's tall Highlanders cooled the Devils off with a con- vincing 6l-47 win. Chula Vista hung their second loss on the Devils, 54-46. Sweetwater closed out their league season with a thrilling 53-50 second straight win over the El Cajon Braves at the Grossmont gym. The league record was set at three wins, five losses. ln summing up the season, Coach Shelmer- dine said, My biggest thrill was our win over Grossmont, my biggest disappointment was in not defeating Chula Vista. I felt that Helix was the best team in the league and that there was not too much to choose be- tween the rest of us. I want to thank Jimmy O'Brien for the great contribution to Sweetwater basketball fortunes, Jim played Bee ball in his sopho- more year, scoring l35 points in 20 games, Varsity ball in his junior year, scoring 230 points in 28 games, and this past year as a senior, scored 329 points in 25 games for a l32 average. His steady improvement, fine floor play, his great leadership on the floor and his excellent attitude made him the ball player I like least to lose by graduation, l wish him luck in his future activities. As for next year, Su-Hi will come as close to being loaded for a season as they ever have. Returning lettermen will be Bob Beardsley, Roger Lively, Ronald Hawkins, Dick Cochran, John Dial, and Calvin Wake. Good prospects up from the Bees will be Bob Jordon and Jack Lensing with Ted Nash and others from the Sophomore squad. We will battle a very good returning Helix team for the championship next year, Come and help us win itl At left, - .... in .. i i, Ron Hawkins sets for a free throw again 1 N4 0, pn .x Xa I M 5 .ry Bee Basketballers The l955-56 edition of the Red Devil B Basketball team proved to be one of the strongest and most spirited squads in Sweetwater's history. The class B cagers wound up in second place in the league behind a very tough Helix team, with 6 wins and 2 losses. They also placed first in the 2nd An- nual Sweetwater B Basketball Tour- nament. Under the expert coaching of Don Bardot, the Diablos defeated all comers with such high scorers as Jack Lensing, Bob Jordon, Arlie Clubb, Don Moore, Paul Lewis, and Frank Storey. Against Grossmont, Bill Walters, Jim Stewart and Mike Rogers ran l-2-3 in the lOO-yard dash. Bill turned in a 9.8 for a new school record. Jim and Mike were only juniors. Carl Hays, hurdler, Larry Himmer, shot putter, and pole vaulters Bill Clauser and Jim King were good for points in every meet. The distance running chores were ably handled by Dave Bavencoff, Glenn Clark, Frank Story, Richard Pinto, Simon Pena, and Vincent Reynolds, captain of the Cross Country team this year.
