The boys in shop will remember him fondly as an understanding friend and counselor from whom they learned good citizenship and a trade of great value. Whether he was in a classroom, encour- aging his students, on the stage directing his crew, or on the athletic field supporting his team, his warm smile and good humor made the occasion a pleasant one. His patient counseling and untiring interest and participation in the extra-curricular activi- ties of Sweetwater, for 24 years, will remain as a cornerstone in our institution. It is to this man, Mr. Alvin Bloomfield Buby, that we, the students of Sweetwater, wish to dedicate our annual. THBLE OF CONTENTS Aclrninis'l'ra'hon . . . S 'uclen'I' Gbverhmeffr. As far baclc in history as the recorded worcls of Homer, man has been guided by the lamps of learning in all areas of human endeavor. A better symbol therefore could not have been found than the one that has served to guide Sweetwater students in their efforts to be adequately prepared to meet the require- ments of American Citizenship, Never before has it been so vitally necessary that you proceed forth into society from school loudly proclaiming that the aim of education is to attain the freedom and Dignity of Man. Bear in mind that to attain this ideal you must be completely free to worlc, to develop fully the talents with which God has endowed each one of us. The future strength and greatness of the United States depends on the graduates of our high schools growing wiser and remembering the ideals and human qualities that wrought the Miracle of America - a nation strong, self reliant, enterprising, dignified and happy. Q 4 'JZ Do you remember that foggy, gray morning ot Sept. I5, 1952, when we met 'For the first time? lt was -on the bleachers and we both were among the 290 new sophomores ot Devilville. The enthusiastic crowd exhibited such a display ot spirit and loyalty that each ot us became eager to participate. This was the awalrening moment when we realized the desire to be recognized as a Red Devil. Ot course, we were reluctant andxtimid to ioin the crowd under the pressure of the upperclassmen. The seni-ors were our ideals and to become one was a dream. By the time we were ready to engage in our junior year our dream came closer lto reality. But it wasn't until passing English, history, drivers ed., hygiene, and,,P. E. that it was a sure thing. Then, sure enough, Sept. I3, l954, rolled around and tor the tirst time in the new Sweetwater Gym, we, the Class ot '55, became otticial owners ot the Senior B yell. The enthusiasm and eagerness we showed as sophomores was tar excelled by that we displayed as seniors. During our Senior Year we etched our names in the permanent records ot Sweet- water. The job we did in public spealcing, journalism, tootball, baslcetball, traclc. baseball, ottice training, song and cheerleading. editing the Su-l-li News or worlring on its statt, producing the annual, participating in the Senior Play, leading the band or marching as head majorette, has made our class one which Sweetwater will l-ong remember. U The precious memories of ditch day, the Prom, Vespers. the Senior Assembly, and the final Graduation Ceremony, will remain with us always. These events marlc the end .of our childhood. The rays to our lamp continue to glow brightly with the expectation ot our suc- cess tor tomorrow. onor .gzfuclenfd ,Rau XJ C? ff gfx C' 'WWW 2'5- L'f'h....f Roberta Joyce Breedrng Ist Davrd James Hollweger 4th 435 A07 Sue Lerlanr Cornelrus 2nd Constance Udean Greoser 3rd T'UdY Ann Johnson 5th S Eafefff SX C ag oD ii,- 9 Y W I . 5 1 1 9 L , J I Y r .-- -f f K Q, - 'V A A ' 9 A . At the end of our Junior year we can look back to that fateful day in September when we entered Su-l-li as scared little Sophomores We can look back with great pride at the ease with which we got adjusted -and became .a part of Su-l-li's various activities. We can look back at this year with a feeling of satisfaction at our accomplish- ments. We presented a Christmas program that was both inspirational and entertaining. We started the drive for attendance at one basketball game. We won the prize money for having the largest attendance at another. We worked with the Sophomores in spon- soring an activity in order to promote friendship between the classes. Individual Juniors won numerous awards and honors in various fields. But the past is now behind us and we can look forward to our Senior year and the things we hope to .accomplish. These are to uphold the mighty traditions of our great school. and. with hard work and zeal, to make this, the class of '56, the finest Sweetwater has ever had. l unior Cjouncif N E y R ' B. Woolsey. As we entered Su-l-li we were a little uncertain and puzzled at the new responsi- bilities tacing us, but after wearing horns, bowing to seniors, and appearing before Senior Court, we all agreed the induction was tun. l-low happy we were when we dumped the seniors in the mud and won the tug-o-war! That weelc we felt like we were really a part ot the school. Throughout the year we learned to participate in the numerous activities and to accept our responsibilities whole-heartedly -and with enthusiasm. We elected officers and a council and had many activities which included an assembly, that we thought was the best ot the year, a dance, and a movie. Class dues made these events possible. We were happy to accept these new responsibilities and new duties that came before us, and we teel we have what it talces, school spirit. ADVISER: MR: CHAMBERLAIN Row l, left to right: J. Gentry, E. As the oldest continual member of the Metropolitan League, Sweetwater once again saw the league rearranged. This time only Sweetwater, Mar Vista, and Chula Vista remained in the league greeting Grossmont lone time Metro leaguerl and Helix to make up the five team loop. The Devil gridders ran from the T-formation, the first time in a number of years, under the direc- tion of Coaches Barney Newlee and John Green. Ouarterbacks Carl Wayne and Felix lnzunza led the Su-Hi eleven afield alternating at the posi- tion for equal duties, and doing a fine job of callin plays. lnzunza did most of the passing for Sweetwater completing six in I6 tries, while Wayne Ted the pair ,in running with a 2.5 yard average. Halfbacks Ralph King fwho was voted Most Valuable Player on the team and was one of the three captainsl and John Dahlen were Sweetwater's main scoring threats in that both were quick, hard charging bruisers with the ability and ambition to succeed through their tremendous efforts. During the season King and Dahlen carried the ball over I60 times between them and each averaged four yards per carry. The fullback position for Sweetwater was one of Coach Newlee's big problems as first-stringer Eddie Vega was the victim of a leg fracture in early season practice and hurt the same leg again in a league contest against Helix after he romped to a 59 yard touchdown. Carl Hays and lSpeedyl Bill Walters shared duties at fullback but lacked the experience in running and ball handling that Vega had mastered. The Devil line proved to be one of the strongest in the league led by All Metro tackles Jack Hines and Richard Mitchell who bolstered both the offensive and defensive attack Hines was selected on both the offensive and defensive team and Mitchell was given a defensive spot on the All Metro squad The guard spots were gapped by Ray Price lHonorable Mention on All Metro Team and Neil Wolf who ripped through the opposing line time after time to spoil enemy intentions Allen Redman played the center position for the Devils and also shined as a linebacker on defense Redman eamed a defensive spot on the All Metro team The end positions were fought over b Darrell Stork Sager Paul Gutzmer Max Braden Jim Pennington and Jimmy Gibbs five capabe blockers tacklers and pass receivers Sager was the only receiver who held a first string post through the majority of the season The Devils also had depth on the bench with second strrngers outdomg the starters on numerous occasions ln the backfield Jim Rufing junior quarterback showed future greatness in passing and smooth ball handling Little Ruben Dominguez scooted for huge gains from left half and with his impressive running performances gained Honorable Mention Some of the better reserves on the line were tackles Don Brewer Bill Wilroy Dennis Magee and Gibley Stedham guards Charles Goss and Zacarias Zarate centers Carl Loya and David Kemper and ends Frank Jaime Phil Speake and Frank Balogh SWEETWATER CAPTAINS Ralph K ns Jack H nes OPP Met o Ca n al Grossmont Ccgiazhiaciirsndael-l gh LEAGUE STANDINGS Escond do Team ea G ossmont He x Ma Vsta Ch la Vsta 84 Leag e Games Gross on e e a e Mar V sta Richard Mitchell . . ir ., . Their two losses were to California High and Brea-Olinda. The first annual Metro olitan League Football Carnival was held at Chula Vista, September 24, which introduced the I954 season to the five Metro teams. ln this contest Sweetwater, battling for the southern schools, including Mar Vista and Chula Vista, played to a six to six deadlock with Gross- mont in their I5 minute skirmish. Fullbacl: Bill Walters scored the Su-Hi touchdown on a I3 yard end swee . The fbllowing evening, Sept, 25, the Devils traveled to California High School in Whittier, California and played their first full length affair but lost to a strong Cal squad by the score of 20 to 6. Halfbaclr John Dahlen scored for the Devils on a three yard off taclrle lunge in the final period. Oceanside was the site of Sweetwater's first victory, October I, as Carl Hays blasted over from the six yard line in the first quarter to score the lone, and winning touchdown of the game, with Jaclc Hines booting the extra point to give the Devils a hard fought 7 to O triumph. The Devils opened the scoring early in the first quarter as Dennis Magee recovered a Cougar fumble on the enemy one yard line from where John Dahlen sccred on the next play, driving through the Escondido front line. Jaclr Hines ran for the conversion, skirting left end. Halfbacic Ralph King jaunted 4I yards on the second play of the third period for Su-I'Ii's other tally, with the help of great downfield bloclcing by the Devil line. Sweetwater lost a close decision to Brea-Olinda High, 'Oct. IS, by a one touchdown margin of 20 to I4, on Chula Vista's field. Again King and Dahlen supplied Sweetwater's scoring punch each scoring once. Frank Jaime converted twice, with a pair of perfect boots. The Devils completed their pre-league schedule by whipping Kearny of the City League by .the score of I3 to 7 in an afternoon game played at Sweetwater. Dahlen scored from the Komet one after a long first period march of BI yards in I9 plays. Utility infielders Curt Ring Jim Pennington and Al Wilkinson also play headssup ball on occasion. The Devil catching staff was made up of a trio of junior baclcstoppers in Ed McCarley Milre Heath and Sam Colarusso who lacked experience but came along as the season progressed. The mound staff consisted of southpaws Frank Balogh and Gerald Miller and right-handers Gerald Gra- ham and Nelson Jerlrins. These four chuclrers showed a lot of stuff but control problems rou bled them on several occas ons The Devils were hurt though without the services of an ace e ty in Ken Harpenau a lunlor transfer from St Au gustine who was ineligible this year due to SC F rulings Coach Green was confident that l-lar p nau had the ability and experience of capably handcuffing any opponent But next year Sweet water will benefit from his southpaw offerings The Diablo outf eld was strong with Jim Cro well Johnny Powell and Carl Wayne rounding out the pasture with slugger Diclc Man ss and Jim Gibbs seeing limited action and doing a fine o One of Su-l lis wealc spots was in clutch hit- ting, The Devils would usually slam an average of eight or nine hits per game but had trouble bunching the bingles to produce, runs. Over-all the team was a hustling bunch of players with a lot of spirit afield which is what it takes to become a success. The future loolrs great for the Devil horsehiders as the majority of the team will be returning next year.
