A Brzef Hzstory of Sweetwater The village of Sweetwater IS over half a century old The first post offlce of whlch George Coburn was postmaster was nn a rock house on the present Carl Fourxer farm The first Star mall carrier was Albert Moffett who carried mall to and from Cheyenne Oklahoma two days a week At that thne there was no rural mall service Sam McCbro was the second postmaster wlth headquarters located ln u building salvaged from the rums of the terrible cyclone at Mobettle Texas along about the turn of the century That place IS known as Mrs A B Brown s farm Mr McCord operated the fxrst general store in Sweetwater Mrs A D jones now of the Sayre Abstract Company, was a pioneer store owner here too The Banks brothers Frank and james bought out the jones merchandise Next came the McKinney Dry Goods Company from Texola Virgil Ward put ln a grocery store where Amos Coffey s statlon 15 now located Sam McCord bought the McKinney merchandlse and along with jim Wlngo built a new store bulldlng located just about where the present office of the North Gin sits The Banks brothers bought the Hurst store building located where the Brown Garage now stands After Mr Feland 5 long term as third post master Frank Banks was appointed to that position About forty years ago Bonebrake and Glllum erected a large hardware and implement butldmg they handled burial furnxshlngs and caskets After a few years with Will Gardner as manager they sold out to Captain Banks affectionately known as Grandaddy Banks Mr Banks as txme went on sold to Francis Kelley who moved the bulldmg to Merxdlan ake Rainey bought the first Mulberry School house and moved It down and located on what IS now the john Gibson property Mr Rainey put fn an ice cream parlor and confectionery and later sold his building to A G Hamilton Dr j I.. Smith a registered druggxst and dentist moved to Sweetwater from Delhi Oklahoma about 1911 and erected a drug store and dental parlor When Dr Smlth s health faxled he sold hxs store and all patent medlclne to Mrs A H Wilson and all prescr1pt1on drugs to W O Hood of Erick Mrs Wilson then put in a stock of grocerxes and general merchandlse In may 1922 Mrs Wllson sold her property to her son E 'II Wllson ln the spot where the Lenderman Cafe slts at present Calvln White once operated a grocery store At about the turn of the century a gm was bullt on the subscription plan lt was known as the Farmers Gln and burned down about the next year or two A new gm was then bullt on the same site and became known as the Planters Gm George Coburn was manager of that gm as long as he lived m thls country Robert ennmgs and jim Self were managers for a number of years At the present tlme Dean Abernathy IS manager Sol Lewis was the fxrst gm manager at the South Gm He was followed by Calvin White j E Hill W1llHarr1s Pete Brawley J R Morrow Dick Self Doyle Turner Ernest Montgomery and B111 Cotts the present manager I l . , , ' 1 . . 1 . . .
