QR to Ixf ', v , .:, m 15 Amie- xxx' ' H, ,rr ' 111-Le-f'r.tw'b119r A fwt 145 I , D 4 , - f N1 A1 7 -.:'::aw,.-If e M' Q Z A Brzef Hzstory of Sweetwater The village of Sweetwater IS over half a century old The first post offlce of whlch George Coburn was postmaster was nn a rock house on the present Carl Fourxer farm The first Star mall carrier was Albert Moffett who carried mall to and from Cheyenne Oklahoma two days a week At that thne there was no rural mall service Sam McCbro was the second postmaster wlth headquarters located ln u building salvaged from the rums of the terrible cyclone at Mobettle Texas along about the turn of the century That place IS known as Mrs A B Brown s farm Mr McCord operated the fxrst general store in Sweetwater Mrs A D jones now of the Sayre Abstract Company, was a pioneer store owner here too The Banks brothers Frank and james bought out the jones merchandise Next came the McKinney Dry Goods Company from Texola Virgil Ward put ln a grocery store where Amos Coffey s statlon 15 now located Sam McCord bought the McKinney merchandlse and along with jim Wlngo built a new store bulldlng located just about where the present office of the North Gin sits The Banks brothers bought the Hurst store building located where the Brown Garage now stands After Mr Feland 5 long term as third post master Frank Banks was appointed to that position About forty years ago Bonebrake and Glllum erected a large hardware and implement butldmg they handled burial furnxshlngs and caskets After a few years with Will Gardner as manager they sold out to Captain Banks affectionately known as Grandaddy Banks Mr Banks as txme went on sold to Francis Kelley who moved the bulldmg to Merxdlan ake Rainey bought the first Mulberry School house and moved It down and located on what IS now the john Gibson property Mr Rainey put fn an ice cream parlor and confectionery and later sold his building to A G Hamilton Dr j I.. Smith a registered druggxst and dentist moved to Sweetwater from Delhi Oklahoma about 1911 and erected a drug store and dental parlor When Dr Smlth s health faxled he sold hxs store and all patent medlclne to Mrs A H Wilson and all prescr1pt1on drugs to W O Hood of Erick Mrs Wilson then put in a stock of grocerxes and general merchandlse In may 1922 Mrs Wllson sold her property to her son E 'II Wllson ln the spot where the Lenderman Cafe slts at present Calvln White once operated a grocery store At about the turn of the century a gm was bullt on the subscription plan lt was known as the Farmers Gln and burned down about the next year or two A new gm was then bullt on the same site and became known as the Planters Gm George Coburn was manager of that gm as long as he lived m thls country Robert ennmgs and jim Self were managers for a number of years At the present tlme Dean Abernathy IS manager Sol Lewis was the fxrst gm manager at the South Gm He was followed by Calvin White j E Hill W1llHarr1s Pete Brawley J R Morrow Dick Self Doyle Turner Ernest Montgomery and B111 Cotts the present manager I l . , , ' 1 . . 1 . . . Q - ' 1 1 O . . . r. 0 1 1 . . . . . . . 1 1 ' 1 1 . a a ' , 1 1 . . . . . . , 1 1 1 1 .1 .1 - , U 0 1 1 j O o u Q a n o 1 1 1 1 1 - 1 , s Q , 1 a u , . 1 n 1 1 , , n , u a o 1 1 , l 1 . 1 1 , U O J V ' I 0 r. . . g , e Q g 1 V 1 0 I 1 1 1 ' 1 l 'J A H Wilson was the first rural carrier on Route One having been transferred from Harrington Post Office seven miles north of Sweetwater j W Mitchell was transferred at the same time and served Route Two Mr Wxlson retired in 1934 havtng reached hrs sixty f1fth blrthday He was followed byj R Eldrlge Leonard Roberts the present postmaster is located rn the A G Hamilton building At the tlme Mr Roberts put in a stock of grocerles Walter Lock was postmaster After the health of Mr Eldrtge falled Mr Lock became rural carrier with Paul Parker as temporary postmaster In former years Sweetwater had as postmasters Mrs A B Wmley Mrs Maggie johnson Mrs Ethel Turner Mrs Dottie Morrow Mrs Garrison, and Cltfford Hogue The missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1910 The first revlval was held ln an arbor built from lumber tn a granery on the farm gamzed ln 1911 and immediately bullt a new church butldlng The Church of Christ people worshipped ln the same building for a number of years and built thexr church rn West Sweetwater The Evangehcal Church moved thexr piano and other furniture from the German Church south of Sweetwater many years ago and placed xt ln the Methodtst building The Methodist Church was sold and moved tnto the country The first school was located one mile vest of the present site It was called Round Top and conslsted of 2 one room butldmgs lt also served as a place of worship each Sunday morning The first term one of seven months tn lengthl at the present school was 1923 Z4 School began ln December and dxsmxssed july l Potter Lowe the first supermtendent was followed by Chester Kaiser Mr Carlton Hugh Curnutt B111 Barham and Henry A Vaughan The present government sponsored hot lunch program IS supervised by Mrs Harvey Smlth with Mrs jack Holbroos and Mrs Frankie Reed as asslstants Material for thls article was contributed by Mrs A H Wllson and Mrs jack Holbrook J 4 . D Q s , , r YQ V , -' -Q The benzor Hzvtory In 1938 the Senlors cl 1950 began thelr educatlon Th1s group of students were of course a very brxlllant mlnded group they thought Those beglnnlng at Sweetwater were Loretta Fourxer Hazel Welch Doris Crook Frances Rothenberger john Frank Haag Dale Coffey Gerald Txpton and A V Lenderman Thelr flrst teacher was Mxss Loraxne Wells She was so proud of them by the time the year was over they had finally learned the A B C sl that she passed them all on to the second grade Thelr second year was much the same as the fmrst and thexr teacher was Miss Sparks The third year several more students came to Join thelr group They were Charles Alexander Geraldine Mandrell and Ruth Sparks from Mayfield Oklahoma They added quite an attraction WHERE? to the group The fourth year was just the same as usual but walt a mlnute What do they see? Yes' there is some one coming Who? Theta Faye Youngblood from Merrdlan Oklahoma and Monnle Crane from Ada Oklahoma In the1r flfth grade they added still another person to thelr group none other than Troy S1tes Then ln the second semester they added thelr muslclan Of course that was Ronnie Coffey The1r sxxth grade teachers were none other than thelr wonderful 1950 sponsors Mr and Mrs Orvllle Stewart ln the eighth grade they had another student to enter thelr class She was Pauline BIHIOD They wonder what effect they had on Paullne because she IS the same he1ght now Then came graduat1on from grade school Thls was of course an exciting tlme They thought they were really grown and were nearly as happy as they are this year The eighth grade valedlctorlan was Pauline Bmxon and the salutatorlans were Loretta Fourler and Monme Crane The Seniors of 1950 started thelr Freshman year scared to death They were as meek as llttle lambs but this dldn t last loo long as you have probably guessed They added another student to thelr group that year He was Lyndall Coffey our great spokes man They were very happy durlng their Freshman year and yes they thought they were the IT of hlgh school just as any other Freshman but now they know they were just as green and stupld as all the rest During thelr Sophomore year two more students came to Jom the ranks They were B11l1e jean jefcoat and Harry Barfxeld from Merldlan Oklahoma Then here comes Bllhe Cotts from .Clinton Oklahoma They thmk B1ll1e and Bllly were just a llttle astonlshed at them for the new students are quiet but full of fun whlle the rest of them lncludlng Harry are full of fun but rather norsy' When they were .IUHIOFS Betty jo Pruet from Retrop Oklahoma and Joyce Mlller from Portales New Mexxco moved ln Betty jo IS qulte a gal but we are wonderlng if she won t leave dear old Sweetwater for Carter' oyce IS the poet lf you don t belleve lt just read Reclpe for a Happy Class They have not had an addltlon durlng the Semor year and are stlll one of the most fun lovlng classes ever ln Sweetwater High! These Semors of 1950 thlnk they have been smart for none have made below an F on their report cards since they have been ln high school! Ronnie Coffey will enjoy his career very much Ruth Sparks wtll live a secretary s life Geraldine Mandrell will be a secretary and will sit on her boss s lap when Ruth zsn t looking!
