It is apparent in the child from its early insistence upon having its own way in everything. Neither home training, nor school education, nor religious training is quite able to take selfishness out of our make-up. We may admire sacrifice sincerely, we may build monuments to heroes of charity, we may love intensely the friend who loves us more than himself- but we rarely attain to that degree of perfection in which we no longer need struggle against selfishness. Someone humorously said that a true Bostonian is one who thinks that Boston is the hub of the universe. But the truth is that neither Boston nor Detroit nor New York nor Paris is the hub of the universe. Each one of us is for himself that hub around which the rest of the world revolves. At any rate that is how each one of us would like it to be. Theme is no walk of life in which the service to God and to neighbor is easy Have you ever stopped to think why there is no commandment telling you to be kind to your self? The answei is easy because you love yourself too much without being told to do so Many of us put so much affection and so much effort in striving for our personal gain and comfort that we have little left for God and other human beings When we come to consider the place which is rightly Gods in our plan of life we must do so on the backgiound of what we owe to God We owe Him our souls owe Hun our will Were God to leave you to your own design and responsibility we would die ln a moment out oi plain ignorance of the functions of our heart and our lungs The wisest of our great scientists could not make an eye that could see nor an ear that could hear nor a finger that could feel God made us preserves us provides for us He made the Garden of Eden for Adam and Eve but He also made the whole world a beautiful garden for all of us We often destroy the beauty around us by littering oui surroundings with the refuse of our slovenly lives We take a soul from the hands of God Wash it clean and spotless with baptismal grace and then ol it woefully with SID aftei sin We take a beautifully constructed body from Gods omnipotent treasury and then rum it with overeatvng overdrmklng immorality Many a man and many a woman plainly speaking rent out their bodies and their minds to the devil and to sin until they are hopelessly ruined and decrepit Then when they are sick and broken wrecks they would like to have God take them back for repairs Just think what you would do to some friend to whom you gave a brand new auto mobile for a Christmas present He used and abused your beautiful car for some time and after banging it up ruining the body he offers it to you in that sad condition Shocking' And yet that IS precisely what we often find people doing to God H creates man beautifies him with graces and gifts gives him a grand world to live in and man turns right arourd and makes a sorry mess of himself and his llfe and still has the shameful boldness to complain us we will trv to serve Our Lord God first Such service is the only service that we should dare to offer to our Heavenly Fathei lhirteu 5 A. 1 .
