Withoiit these E driving forces there would be no progress either in the individual or E the nation. Wie speak of running water and of stagnant water: the one lg is the fresh sweet babbling brook or the mighty majestic river, both 5 E moving along and capable of doing workg the other is the unlovely E pool or marsh filled with decaying vegetation, an eye-sore in any land- E scape. 5 E :X useful life requires looking ahead to find work to do, and to do E it in a manner which will provide an outlet for young energy as well E as the means of a decent livelihood. Young people who seriously E if mean to make a mark in the world must look ahead. The world is not standing still. Nowadays you must run at a fairly rapid rate to E keep in the place which you may have attained. just stop doing and E E see how soon you will be left far behind your classg yes. and behind your generation, too. The young pupil who doses through his school- E days will keep on losing later in life and be mighty lucky if he does E E not land in the pitiful ranks of beggars. The school gives you a start in life and once you have learned the E habits of persistent work on the school program, you continue right E E on into life and throughout life. The laggard in school is also the laggard in life. He's always behind time: behind time with getting ? a job: behind time with payments on his home: behind time with E E establishing himself in society. 2 Looking ahead is sound preparation for the future. It requires E taking your own measure. so that you may know how big and how E E strong you must be in order to tackle the job of making a living. And by the way. making a living is no small job these days. Many a E youthful ambition has been dashed to pieces on the hard rocks of our E 5. street pavements, because a young heart was not prepared for the merciless knocks of modern life. A task is not so hard when you know E beforehand that it is hard. Things don't catch you unawares and un- E prepared. That's something young people must reckon with. if they E would avoid those heartbreaks which make life hard. E E To look ahead is to build for happiness and contentment. Happiness 2 is not an accident. If it were there would be a lot of happiness - there 222 are a great many accidents in a large city like ours, but it remains a E E big question whether there is much real happiness. You must build wisely because you have only one life to build. If you make a mess E out of that one life you can't drop into a store and buy a new one E E after throwing the first one into discard. Look ahead yourself and do not count on others to continue to do ii it for you! Your parents and your school do that for you during the E 2 period of childhood and youthful immaturity, but there must come a time when they can no longer do it for you. That is how life is ar- E ranged and that is how life is built. So look ahead!
