Withoiit these E driving forces there would be no progress either in the individual or E the nation. Wie speak of running water and of stagnant water: the one lg is the fresh sweet babbling brook or the mighty majestic river, both 5 E moving along and capable of doing workg the other is the unlovely E pool or marsh filled with decaying vegetation, an eye-sore in any land- E scape. 5 E :X useful life requires looking ahead to find work to do, and to do E it in a manner which will provide an outlet for young energy as well E as the means of a decent livelihood. Young people who seriously E if mean to make a mark in the world must look ahead. The world is not standing still. Nowadays you must run at a fairly rapid rate to E keep in the place which you may have attained. just stop doing and E E see how soon you will be left far behind your classg yes. and behind your generation, too. The young pupil who doses through his school- E days will keep on losing later in life and be mighty lucky if he does E E not land in the pitiful ranks of beggars. The school gives you a start in life and once you have learned the E habits of persistent work on the school program, you continue right E E on into life and throughout life. The laggard in school is also the laggard in life. He's always behind time: behind time with getting ? a job: behind time with payments on his home: behind time with E E establishing himself in society. 2 Looking ahead is sound preparation for the future. It requires E taking your own measure. so that you may know how big and how E E strong you must be in order to tackle the job of making a living. And by the way. making a living is no small job these days. Many a E youthful ambition has been dashed to pieces on the hard rocks of our E 5. street pavements, because a young heart was not prepared for the merciless knocks of modern life. A task is not so hard when you know E beforehand that it is hard. Things don't catch you unawares and un- E prepared. That's something young people must reckon with. if they E would avoid those heartbreaks which make life hard. E E To look ahead is to build for happiness and contentment. Happiness 2 is not an accident. If it were there would be a lot of happiness - there 222 are a great many accidents in a large city like ours, but it remains a E E big question whether there is much real happiness. You must build wisely because you have only one life to build. If you make a mess E out of that one life you can't drop into a store and buy a new one E E after throwing the first one into discard. Look ahead yourself and do not count on others to continue to do ii it for you! Your parents and your school do that for you during the E 2 period of childhood and youthful immaturity, but there must come a time when they can no longer do it for you. That is how life is ar- E ranged and that is how life is built. So look ahead! S E MARIAN f W My Lord God Must Be Served First fClass Motto, The natural impulse of human nature is towards selfishness. It is apparent in the child from its early insistence upon having its own way in everything. Neither home training, nor school education, nor religious training is quite able to take selfishness out of our make-up. We may admire sacrifice sincerely, we may build monuments to heroes of charity, we may love intensely the friend who loves us more than himself- but we rarely attain to that degree of perfection in which we no longer need struggle against selfishness. Someone humorously said that a true Bostonian is one who thinks that Boston is the hub of the universe. But the truth is that neither Boston nor Detroit nor New York nor Paris is the hub of the universe. Each one of us is for himself that hub around which the rest of the world revolves. At any rate that is how each one of us would like it to be. Theme is no walk of life in which the service to God and to neighbor is easy Have you ever stopped to think why there is no commandment telling you to be kind to your self? The answei is easy because you love yourself too much without being told to do so Many of us put so much affection and so much effort in striving for our personal gain and comfort that we have little left for God and other human beings When we come to consider the place which is rightly Gods in our plan of life we must do so on the backgiound of what we owe to God We owe Him our souls owe Hun our will Were God to leave you to your own design and responsibility we would die ln a moment out oi plain ignorance of the functions of our heart and our lungs The wisest of our great scientists could not make an eye that could see nor an ear that could hear nor a finger that could feel God made us preserves us provides for us He made the Garden of Eden for Adam and Eve but He also made the whole world a beautiful garden for all of us We often destroy the beauty around us by littering oui surroundings with the refuse of our slovenly lives We take a soul from the hands of God Wash it clean and spotless with baptismal grace and then ol it woefully with SID aftei sin We take a beautifully constructed body from Gods omnipotent treasury and then rum it with overeatvng overdrmklng immorality Many a man and many a woman plainly speaking rent out their bodies and their minds to the devil and to sin until they are hopelessly ruined and decrepit Then when they are sick and broken wrecks they would like to have God take them back for repairs Just think what you would do to some friend to whom you gave a brand new auto mobile for a Christmas present He used and abused your beautiful car for some time and after banging it up ruining the body he offers it to you in that sad condition Shocking' And yet that IS precisely what we often find people doing to God H creates man beautifies him with graces and gifts gives him a grand world to live in and man turns right arourd and makes a sorry mess of himself and his llfe and still has the shameful boldness to complain us we will trv to serve Our Lord God first Such service is the only service that we should dare to offer to our Heavenly Fathei lhirteu 5 A. 1 . Signed, Mary M. Kozlowski. CLASS PROPHECY A startled world gasped with amazement when Professor Confuscious, a dark horse in scientific researches, suddenly invented a. prognosticator machine which could predict the future. The instrument shows on screen that which passes through the mind. It was my good fortune to attend the lecture given by Professor Confuscious, followed by a short exhibition. When it was all over the other guests went away, but I asked the Professor whether it would be asking too much to go over with the experiment again. I explained that I was appointed to write the Class Prophecy and would like to have the thoughts of the Oriental Prophet portrayed on the screen. He assented. so I gave the Oriental a list of the names of my classmates and asked him to think of their respective fates. The seer was connected by a thin coil to the machine and directly opposite was the screen. Soon the lights were extinguished, then came a few words muttered by the seer, followed by sparks and sputteringg then my attention was given to the screen, for soon I saw what the future had in store for my classmates. What! Could it be possible? Yes, it is Joseph Baranski, receiving all honors in New York City after he breaks all previous records in a non-stop transatlantic flight. s 1 K Twe nt y Thx 1 e IIIlllllllllfilkllIIIIIIllIlIIIIRM-illllllIIIIUIII1976!IlllllllIIIIIIIRYEZIIIIHIIIlIIIIIZNECIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISWIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIRYEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRYEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRYHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRYEZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRYETIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIQYHIIIIIIIIIIIFF' : in EUIIIIIII IllIWNIIIIIllIllIllllIIWNZIIIIIIIllIllllMllhlllllllIIIIIIIMIHII llllllllllldlhl llllIllIllIMIE.IllllllllllllllllllIIIMMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHNIllllllllllllIMLEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMLHllllllllIllIll.-WHIIIIIIIIIIIIII 41V Illlllllllllllk E Qi N s N . . ., . 3 . . . ., . Holding on to Mary. 2 From east and West they fondly came, Of course you know tor perhaps saw? From north and south by wended lane The Seniors filled our hearts with awe E In search of knowledge and of fame Because we felt so small, so raw 5 And more than just a passing name Although they did their best to thaw 5 At Sweetest Heart of Mary. Us cut at recreation. 5 Some were quite dark and some were fair, Initiation broke the ice E The finest crowd I do declare! And after all it was quite nice Z Willing iwhy not?J to do their share Though at first we felt like mice 5 Eager to show how much they care At the mercy of a cat's device Z For Sweetest Heart of Mary. Unheard of at dear Mary's. 5 The thought of Latin made some shrink The contest of the Fish Pond near, : Until they found it made them think Led us a-searching far and near I Up better English themes. Then drink To bring in bites both quaint and dear 5 They did nouns, verbs, and chatter Without a tiny doubting fear 32 Latin for their Alma Mater. For its success at Mary's. Rl ll Science set many a heart a-flutter With Thanksgiving over, what elation H But English made them sigh and mutter To think that soon we'll have vacation Yet since it meant their bread and butter And gifts galore to make and ration f No frivolous comment would they utter And then come back to take our station 2 But settled down to work. At Sweetest Heart once more. Yes, Mathematics had its place Christmas over. Oh, where's the zest 2 But here and there We saw a trace We need to face another test E Of slight dismay upon some face Yet each one's hoping for the best 5 When conquered by algebraic phase And anxious to be among the blest At Sweetest Heart of Mary. At Sweetest Heart of Mary. 5 The next thing that appears in view 3 4If what I hear by the way is trueb That soon our Year Book will be due. f Then hurrah our photos will come through Q To grace the book of Mary. 12 With Easter going at full swing : And here and there a holiday fling 5 We must with all our hearts now cling To thoughts of study and such thing 2 At Sweetest Heart of Mary. E Our au revoirs we soon shall say Q To Al, and Joe and Rose and May But yet we know that some sweet day, 5 And that will not be far away, QE: We're coming back to Mary's. .
