We share our pleasures, our triumphs, and our few disappointments for so long that we shall miss the old companionship more than we now realize. School days are the strongest association of our daily existence. In studying together we, with but one thought and purpose, learn or begin to learn in the way to live. 'Tis working with the heart and soul, That makes our duty pleasure. School days are the happy days that keep us working towards the desired goal willingly, happily, patiently, and successfully, without con- sciousness of friction or undue fatigue. Love, sympathy, tact and patience bring us into happy fellowship. We work cheerfully and happily together, loving the work and honoring ourselves and one another, one purpose com- mon to all, being, to do the best possible thing for the school and for our- selves as units in the school. Our motto, expressed or unexpressed, is, Each for all, and all for the Right! All the years of our student life we are for the most part on the receiving hand. Dear school days! Not a step of our progress is without its lessons, many of them hard to learn, and oft-times very discouraging to us, who yet know so little of the life into which we are born. But we are brave, and when the teachers smile encouragingly, we give a happy response forgetting everything else in the joy of being alive. With the smile of every good influence ever resting in richest benedic- tions upon us, our lives are indeed as calm and quiet as the peaceful flow of a little brook, which need take no thought of its own existence but flow on and on, with its face turned ever upward toward the sunshine. These are very happy days for us, progressing ever onward, because we are so impelled by our own natural impulses, and are coaxed by our faithful teachers. Held in our memories are thoughts of school There to remain as the years roll by Monuments such as no hand can design Let Fate do her worst these are relics of joy Bright memories of school days she cannot destroy Aucr CLOWACKA 32 1 4 ' : r-7: -......1,L-.11 I.-m-4: 7: . : r 1 za :1 Y 4: :: :: 1: -- ' :: : : : J t If l tl 4 tt Y t l 3 W u ' ? , , it i i 1 it ' 5 f 1 E, l xx H V B 1 P0 . t it 4 ' 1 is 9 L I . , ' 1 Memories of school days, so happy. Our minds and hearts in varying degree Have taken up and slowly made their own Rock-bottom truths that others, strong in years, Have found to be unchanging and supreme. More joy had come to us within this time Than all the unlived years of life can bring, Friends gained through hours of common toil and fun, Ideals and motives for the days ahead, , The satisfaction felt from duties doneg The realization of the debt we owe, The will to pay it through anotheris joy. Life is a tangled knot of days and days, Of years and years, until the soul has found Its mark. Then purpose, like a golden thread, Runs through each day and year, each thing we do Weaving the time-proof pattern of a life Worthwhile. The years will be the proving ground Where we shall stand for all the world to see What strength is ours, what courage born of strength What Vision,-from its sacrifice to us. Always aided, thus shall we strive to aid. STELLI-I WISNIEWSKA '32, 9 tj I if i t L E. l F 5 E 5 i t Q , gtg I f fe' t ym't ',,,. lzgf' .Ii-'n,,,j b: 5fgh .f4Q '5.,f'Uf 24p4'L5z. i-:ffl-45 'Y.,.. We are now at the junction of many roads-the end of the path of Commercial High School Life - the path we have trod for two J .. ears. I y Much as I dislike digressions, I, myself, shall make one right at this point, ll for I feel that a retreading of the path in retrospect will not be amiss. lj We entered upon this by-way of Life as juniors, with a feeling of joy, tinged if it H with exultation, in that, now, we too were high school students, and more, it I l' students of the Sweetest Heart of Mary Commercial High. Above all other feel- ig I H ings, however, quriosity reigned supreme, curiosity regarding the teachers, sub- H if jects of study and new surroundings. ,, it Gradually we became accustomed to the work, the rules, and the regulations ll H of this institution. Our first undertaking was to elect our Class President and his ' V H assistants. The Junior Class, headed by the able guidance of the officers, con- H I tinued to journey step by step. As time passed, our way was darkened by the ' fl ! clouds of exams but, as always, After clouds comes fair weather , it was again ' brightened by the sun of pleasing lectures, together with class activities. By the it end of the first semester the novelty of our position, that of high school students, H -K had worn off, but it left behind an indelible mark of the wisdom that comes only H l j with age. H 5' During the second semester, we eagerly set about busying ourselves in var- M t ious ways to raise money to help the Class Fund . Our aim was high and by lj careful guidance, we were able to hit the mark . Obstacles in our path, even l ll rocks, in the form of new studies, which we encountered in the first term were ll I it overcome. The remainder of the ascent passed uneventful and soon we dwelt in il j ,, Senior Land. fi '4 jj The present school year found us smaller in number, but what we lacked in ,, ' it number we more than made up for in spirit. We were eager to complete the final lap of the Business Course. To our surprise we found the new subjects not so l ll difficult as we first considered them to be. ij Days passed by and then came the election of class officers. What excite- it T ment pervaded the air! Who would be most trustworthy, faithful, and loyal? On 'Q lt whom could we place our Senior future with a feeling of safety? The result of ,I A' ,, the election was as follows: Bernice Mazankowska, Presidentg Stelle Wisniew- 5 ,l ska, Vice-President, Alice Glowacka, Secretary, Raymond Nowicki, Treasurer. T H With these officers our class has had a very successful year. l' f V Clubs! This seemed to be our middle name. To us was given the first honor I i to organize all the clubs-the power behind the school. These organizations ll , ll fostered school spirit and that was the leading characteristic of our Senior Year. .: lf We were proud of these Clubs as we had reason to be, for they had come to be H i lf the very essentials of our school life. X, Likewise, we were the first to be privileged with a monthly page, Marian- U X Q: ettc, in the Memoirs. Marianette - what a world of meaning the title conveyed I to an interested student body whose activities it related. The class had contributed I L the articles and had worked diligently to make the page worthy of such a name. o ,, Then came the first big event of the term, the Halloween Party! That, as l' Q our teachers prophecised, marked the beginning of a social calendar. The Seniors ll jj proved charming hostesses to the noble juniors. Did we have fun? We sang, li and yelled, and had the best of time, until finally, unwilling as we were, we had ' U to leave. if . ll .l 1' .S-.c::::::::t:::'fr':::::::ai:::::.:::r:'i':::::xx1J+ g fy-four E. ! 5 V4 I at at 2 E E t E Q Z. Miss Leocadia Rosinska was honored with the manager's job. The Candy Canteen, had, we believe. the great- est assortments of sweets to be found anywhere in the city. The prices were rock- bottom, and thus far it had enjoyed unusual popularity. After the opening of the new semester when everyone plunged deeply in their work the members of the Historical Club called these diligent students together to celebrate with them the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of George Vkfashington. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone and was deemed a great success. Soon the fresh spring days were blossoming forth and we became restless and tired of the regular routine and sought for something new. Lo and behold! It was the Senior Hop - a beautiful dream realized - which enlivened us. It was the first formal Senior Promenade that has been given, and to us, again, the honor had been bestowed. And what a beautiful Hop it wasl Picture the panorama that was unfolded when smiling faces, twinkling feet, and variegated gowns were combined. And Oh! The Music! We can still hear the luring strains and the rhythmic syncopation of the orchestra. Never before, had that Audito- rium looked so wonderful! It was a scene which made the hall appear like a beautiful flower garden. Then came the Bunco, so-unusual, so different from all others. The affair was a success, which was partly due to the work of the capable Committee but more to the support offered by the whole class. Again, our class was prominent in extra-curricular activities. We had been given the distinction to compose the School Song that will remain for all gene- rations. A word of gratitude we have to the Juniors for the beautiful carved shield which they donated to our class and which is to remain here for all time. Long will this thoughtful kindness linger in our memory. Great endeavors were concentrated upon the publication of our annual, The Marian . Everybody co-operated with the annual staff to make it as successful as possible, worthy to present our Alma Mater in the proper light. During the month of May, we made one of the most interesting and edu- cational trips, a student body can make. The tour was scheduled well, so that many places were visited in a day. We were privileged to visit and inspect the Ford Rouge Plant. the largest and most complete industrial center in the world. VVe, likewise, visited the Ford Aircraft Factories and Hangars, and closely ob- served the Plane and other historical ships that were on exhibition. We viewed Greenfield Village, including Edison's Menlo Park Buildings. It was, indeed, a wonderful trip and proved to be very successful. Our Senior Year has been the most prosperous year of our school life. We had received countless other privileges, all we wanted to our hearts' content. It was ours for the asking. A few curves, however, remained to be rounded, before we should come in sight of our goal. The Senior Year marked the beginning of the end, which we now view, not as we expected, with the triumph of achievement, but with sad- ness and regret, regret for the pleasures and honors we experienced and the security we felt while treading the narrow by-way, and which we will leave be- hind when we enter, the broad high-way that stretches out before us. Looking back, we will, perhaps for the last time, hear the kindly words of advice and the love-inspired admonitions of the Monitors of our High School Life: there will be but a sad farewell and then we shall start on our way, determined that come what may. we will always be true to the high ideals acquired during our life 'neath the roof of our Alma Mater. g N nga N g Alice Glowacka, 32 il 1 T U it l H ll l it it l' U l l l Ll ll H Ll H V H l Ju ya: ggx-sm 1 1 fr 1'-mf , ,ve ABTZQ12- .9,4n '1,1lrfmZ-.,-mir:-.Qs AQ.-F'-fix 'Hx . WVe hold this advice very dear and it is a great sacrifice for us to it. You may not appreciate it now, but as the days, months, and years Perhaps one of the most valuable bits of advice to the average junior is that on various methods of getting by without previous preparation of the lesson. This is most commonly accomplished by what is known as getting the teacher off the subject . All teachers are human, you know, and have their weaknesses. Kindly realize that this is strictly confidential, but our Sister Teacher dearly loves to eulogize the winter weather. Some mild winter day when you haven't prepared your Spanish and you have that guilty feeling which not infrequently Fx n if - if ii ll I. - l 1-,iw f -- f- .- -.--.-.A --1-W 1-1'-1-11-c an-in-:az ::-f-::7:. :n:::7-:fzrfzwi 1: 34:-if ll S l l ll I l comes during one's school life, just give an ejaculation similar to the following: Oh, how I wish winter would really begin! And if you succeed in keeping an innocent and guileless expression you will be rewarded by the introduction to ll the long series of complimentary comments on winter sports. 'F Another well-set method to get away from the mechanical things of the class room is to yearn for singing. Willing or unwilling the teacher is affected. L Her mind and her heart are alike moved by the songs. We have felt jubilant because of these triumphs, - all, through this magic charm - Music. ll 47 After you have used the above advice and found it helpful do not let it enter your head, for you still have the most difficult problem ahead of you, and l that is, to swerve the aim of the Catechist from his self assigned path of dutyg namely, to initiate our unwilling minds into the mysteries of Church History. l It is hard to advise you on this point, for we warn you, our theologian will not be caught in the same net twice. For instance, once we derived from him a de- - scription of the manufacture of gum, but the next time we tried to use the same jj subject, we were forced to succumb to a burst of dictation on the 'tCrusades . We leave this difficult case to your ingenious minds, dear juniors, for we consider you more capable of practicing your wiles on this conscientious person than we have been. And, above all, in the attempt to divert the Catechist's mind l' from dictation, be sure to work in a body, for it is seldom that one pupil's per- sonality is sufficient to succeed in that purpose. 1 In conclusion we warn you not to become too bold in your attempts, for the questioner often becomes the target of a volley of impossible questions from 'I both teachers. 'j Having given you our choicest pieces of advice, we send with them our most sincere wishes for your success in the Senior Class, and we hope you shall also 1, feel it your duty to advise your followers, likewise, Hasta Luego! lj ALICE GLOWACKA, '32. 5 ll iris: ze :: :- 1:7:nf::f::7:n :ni-un f-n-.zu-f:e-eu-Quin:-Y-n-u--sz xv-11-u:f:u1uu7:a7::x...::-c1Q f Forty-three ... m., Q ,rl-7 anne-'m.Af'R.. fe M a r i a n f slr..-.-..-..-..-....-...-...-,.-...-..-...-.......-..-..-..-..-...... -...-..-......- -..-..-..-..-..-.......-..-H. 9 I 2' I . . I I -- f J The real purpose of education and mental discipline is not merely the W acquirement of knowledge or the accumulation of facts, but rather the de- f1 g velopment of the pupil's power of observation - the ability to reason - I I X the development of character. The paramount thing then is character. It ' 51 ' I is the stern monitor that youth needs today against the subtle egoism of g 'I k modernistic culture. Therefore, our modem educational methods are in I l f need of still further revision and improvement, and the time is certain FW x to come when every phase of school life will be studiously directed toward I I I this great goal of existence - character development. si 5 Character is the real individual. It is the grand sum of ideas, sensa- S tions, percepts, memory, imagination, discrimination, judgment, reason, af- - lt . ! firmation, willing and doing. It is the finished material picture of the f 5 I invisible mental painter. It need not he very evident, but it must he ha- I A f bitual. At times a word suffices, a reflection, a smile, an advice, an invita- i tion, a. wish, a glance, a cheer, a sympathy. It is the it in a person. , : Character combines the strength of man with the tendemess of the .I I Q woman. It tempers force with love. It is as unyielding as adamant, yet ten- Q I I der as a mother's heart. Character presupposes a. noble heart, a polished I 4 I soul, an unbigoted mind, a satisfied will, a flame of inspiration. I hd f You cannot cultivate violets on a thistle, you know! And hence, a I I character builder can make one cry at a misdeed through psychology, can I , make one feel sorry for a wrong without philosophy, can make one sym- 1 at ' pathize without admonition - and all of this can be accomplished with i I I I a. sense of duty and not with a fear of force. I I R The knowledge we acquire is but raw material. Character means the if concentration and the development of this crude material on will, heart, I f li and Faith. That is the end and purpose of all education in a Catholic - I Af LI School. Without this aim of education the Catholic School has no reason W n ,I for existence. 1 f Q U Formal instructions, lessons of all sort are only a part of the contri- I .. Q button to the development of man. If the future citizen is to be patriotic, , KX 5 if loyal, law-abiding, progressive, ambitious, intelligent, pure, moral, possessed I ,I 1: of lofty ideals, zealous of good works, responsive to the demands of duty, i l 5 conscientious, it will be because of the inspiration he receives from his 5 In K I teacher. To no profession and to no class of men is committed so high a I ' mission as is committed to the school-teacher. X ,, l -I , n Years may roll by, knowledge gained at school may air away, but , E what one has heard, how one has seen it, the peculiar way in which it ' I, has been imparted, the way it has been sweetened with Faith - that will In 5 H remain, for a man's soul is a unit. America must face the signifi- cant prohibition question, check the rising tide of crime and improve her moral standard. Reconstruction is still going on, all over the land. Much, indeed, needs to be reconstructed: much to be destroyed. VVe can all have a part in it, women as well as meng girls as well as boys. Whatever helps to make the nation better and nobler, whatever serves to elevate the people of the land to any higher plane of thought and life: whatever, in any way, makes America better worth living in, is helping on the great work of present-day reconstruction. During these years of our student life Alma Mater has had the training of us in this spirit of patriotism. She has been showering upon us her best gifts. While it is true that we have justly earned a certain portion of all that we have attained, there is a great deal of that subtle inner development, that gra- dual, day by day character building, that almost invisible growth and expansion of the dormant man and woman within us, for which we are greatly indebted to all the influences, both seen and unseen, that have been brought to bear upon us through all these years. Alma Mater has realized that the strongest asset of the American nation, and indeed of every other nation, is its citizenship. She has certainly put forth every effort in her power to make true American men and women out of the raw material within her hands. How well she has succeeded, of course, only the future can determine. We do express our sincere thanks for all that she has so cheerfully done, and tried to do, for each one of us, and trust that the years to come may demonstrate to her satisfaction as well as to our own, that out of the material from which we were made, Alma Mater was really as successful as even her ambition could desire, in turning us out - men and women. The colors of Alma Mater fire us with the zeal to make of ourselves such men and women as our country, as well as our school, shall be glad to claim their own. VVe go forth with the determination of proving to the world that our Alma Mater was certainly one of the best mills for grinding out individuals that are worth while. VVith loyalty as our controlling spirit, we shall be loyal to ourselves, to our class, to our school, and we shall of necessity be loyal to every larger claim that the American nation can demand of the most efficient of her sons and daughters in any hour of her need. Alma Mater is certainly a school to be proud of and deserves all the praise that is given her. We were quite a crowd of bewildered grammar school children who as- sembled in Room 207. on September eighth, and who with all attending pomp and glory assumed the dignified role of High School Students. At this novelty our heads swelled and our hearts beat proudly, but alas, all feeling of superiority vanished as the year progressed, and as we looked upon the Seniors carrying themselves unimportantly . We quieted down and began a careful ascent up the paths of Knowledge. Ambitious we were, to be the best class ever to come to this High School. We began to study and we studied hard. The subjects were entirely strange to us, and we found much difficulty, but we were led on by our teachers. Trying hard, we minced the harship with pleasure and found the year as it came to a close to be exactly as one of our teachers often quoted: School days are happy days . As juniors, we were not alloted many priveleges, but we know that we shall have many during our Senior year. NVe looked with envy on the Seniors, for they were the first to be given the honor of starting many activities and social events. VVe thought for a while that there was nothing exceptional for us to do, and that our class would not be distinguished for anything in particular, during our second year. But we found otherwise - each day brings a new idea - and we have learned that some of these have been reserved for us. Several times during the year our journey halted so that we together with our schoolmates, the Seniors, might enjoy an afternoon at the School Audi- torium, where singing. dancing and real fun predominated. We shall never forget the colorful Senior Hop, which we helped to make such a success. We shall also remember the kindness of the Seniors to have shared with us some of the club activities. We feel satisfied in the manner we have supported the year's program. Likewise, we feel distinguished to have in our midst a member who thru his craftmanship made shields, not only for us, but also for the Seniors and the classes that passed away. As long as these grace the walls of this institution, our class will belong to those worthwhile remembering. Taken collectively the school year yielded nothing of individual achieve- ment, but it may be said that day after day, we trudged up the path of Know- ledge and Refinement. All in all, the year has been most successful and the time passed so quickly that we ended our activities as juniors with regret. Looking forward to our possession of the rank of Seniors, we wish them success in whatever field of Business they choose to apply their efforts. As you enter, the first section of books you see i .1 are works of general reference - encyclopedias, so planned and written that they are easily I ' X adapted to the students. A work of this sort is a library in itself and contains very useful 4 information. The Webster's Standard Dictionary is the reference work most constantly Q , J consulted by the pupils. Its use is very important and the wealth of information within its T 5 covers is very great. And then your glance flits about the room, attempting to take in all 'f 1 the books thereof. There are books and books and books again! And books for reading fl ' S, purely for the pleasure one may obtain from them. Among these are myths, fairy tales H J B and other stories. The primary children revel in this sort of literature: it is one of the most H i ' I valuable agencies in the formation of character, and one of the best means of developing 574 X the imagination for use in after years. Ideals of right and wrong and of truthfulness, purity :Q A . and justice are fixed early in life by books of this sort. Book-sections filled with biogra- 5 phies, works describing animals, stories of the great industries and works of fiction that N the older children enjoy enrich one side of the room, while books on religion, sociology, I philology, useful arts and fine arts fill the shelves on the other. if P I 2' Oh, to have the time and the power of reading these printed pages of a thousand ' ,Q books - the inspirations which make life worth living! The librarian instructs these girls in the management of a school library. Actual field work complements the instruction and the girls are given a chance to work in the library. These girls can locate and replace books, loan books, check the return of books, enter books, follow up overdue books, and help out in many ways. This training familiarizes the girls with a knowledge and love of books which remains with them all their lives. I I 'I I Besides performing library duty, the club endeavors to raise money for general I I purposes by means of bringing some form of entertainment to the school. It may be considered an honorary society, since its membership is restricted to fifteen girls of the Junior and Senior classes who are recommended by their teachers for their high scholastic standing. Plans for some i kind of a History Club have long been considered, and this semester they have matured i into this highly interesting organization, I The society is an instrument by means of which much research work and other things connected with the study of current history may be carried on outside of the classroom. I Besides the fact that the regular school periods do not furnish any time for this particular J subject, an organized club has the additional advantage of being able to bring together .V the current news of our country, state, and city. I The object of the Historical Club is to promote interest in current history. Further- ' D more it helps to bring the students in close touch with some of the very important and 1 outstanding facts. This research has proved not only of interest to the members of the A club, but it has also been very valuable to the student body. I . Ig All Seniors are eligible to the Club and all Juniors whose average is above 88117. I The motto of this club i 4 s Carry on C ' I . The finish of the Grand March t I 1 Senior Hop Clear night - bright moon Swaying rhythm - wailing sax Everything in tune Much use of compacts kg Ford roadsters - much fun Last dance - many sighs Promenade begun Homeward bound - goodbyes! I i All year long, we heard tales of the Senior Hop, but they remained merely fancies A until the time for the first annual dance arrived. The beautiful dream was realized on : t that historical evening of April the third, and it placed the Senior Class among the unforgetables of the many classes yet to come. They were given the distinction of being , the first to give such a magnificent affair - one perhaps that will not be duplicated in many years to come. X A deft touch of different was evident from the beginning to the end. The eve- : - ning was a charming feast for the eye, ear, mind, and heart. The affair was held at the I 5 School Auditorium which for that night really was converted into a ballroom . The i k beautiful floor, the luxurious rest-rooms, the artistic decorations, astonished all that attended. - It was a perfect evening. Not the slightest trace of anything occurred to mar the Q effect of that memorable night. The men were attired semi-formally, and the women, F ' too. The Class, in whose honor the evening was arranged, were neatly dressed in variegated f green gowns, on which corsages of violets were very conspicuous, and they wore foot- 2 wear to match. x The Grand March spirited all. The unique distinction was given to Raymond No- f wicki and Miss Mary Ann Kolodziejski. Almost all the dancers participated in time to ' the stirring strains of the school song, Hail Alma Mater's Colors , and then as they L all stood at attention, the school song was intoned for the first time by the girl leader. ' Another historical moment! In commemoration of this event, the song hereafter, becomes the school hymn. I A It was an evening long to be remembered. After many other events have been forgotten, the memory of the social debut of our class will linger, and so may the thought that this I school year, we have advanced maybe too rapidly. The meetings are conducted entirely in Spanish and everyone takes an active part in - the proceedings. A program committee assigns to each member a topic on the history, J literature, or any other interesting item of a certain country, which he' discusses entirely . in Spanish. THE SHORTHAND CLUB The Students of Stenography, or as they are better known, the Shorthand Club of the Sweetest Heart of Mary Commercial High School, has been in exist- ence for the last two years, and has been a very active school organization. This organization is open to all students taking second year shorthand and who receive an O. G. A. certificate from the Gregg Writer for notes which must be correct in theory, accurate in proportion and execution, free in movement. To remain in the club they must keep a standing of 8O for every month. . The aim of the Shorthand Club is to promote interest and to encourage social spirit among the students, and to maintain a higher standard of efficiency. Perhaps the most notable of the Club's achievements during the year was the participation in the Annual O. G. A. Contest, the results of which will be announced sometime in june. The meetings are held the first Monday of each month. As a whole, the Club this year enjoyed a most wonderful success. And so in September we commenced a continuation course which included the subjects taken for the general course - so that in the event some would want to continue school, they would not be handi- Capped. Forty-four former '28 pupils registered, of which eighteen were boys. These dis- played so much interest and so much lo- yalty that they will be remembered for many years to come. liven today, they be- long to the most loyal sons of their Alma Mater. This class did not graduate because the course of studies was changed to the Com- mercial, but it was as good a class as we ever cared to see. It was the fountain for the High School that we have at present, and which in studies ranks with the fore- most of the City. - Class of 1931 The very first commercial class that has ever passed out into the world of real work from our school was the Class of 1931. It consisted of twenty-two members, of which just one was a boy. Their willingness to progress, as well as their eo-operation and good spirit, filled the first chapter of our Commercial High History. Since all beginnings are difficult, they were not as conspicuous as the classes that shall follow, but they realized that all be- ginnings are a little unsettled. Their spirit led to the fact that our school in its second year has advanced very rapidly - perhaps even too rapidly. a 4Nggl L1fx .Th ' 534:-4 ,gh A,,,.f! This class numbered twenty- two, and during the year fourteen more loyal candidates from the Class of '29 were taken into the Alumni. The meetings of the Alumni are held monthly, and the first year has witnes- sed a splendid attitude displayed by the members towards making it a permanent organization. After many constructive criticisms and interesting discussions, the Constitution was formally accepted. On the evening of December 13, the Association presented in the School Auditorium, as their annual play, a three act comedy, One Dollar Down . The entire action of the play took place in the living room of a modern American family. The plot of the play centered around the children's cravings for a new home. The complications that arose as a result of this plan were very intricate and humorous. The various parts were portrayed very effectively by the mem- bers of the cast, who contributed greatly to the success of the play. The Catholic Boys Band of 75 pieces furnished superfine music for this presentation. Everyone seemed well-satisfied with the first dramatic efforts of the Alumni. In deep resignation the members bowed their heads to God's omnipotent ways, when He had taken Miss Mary Smagacz for her reward on January 3. The Funeral Mass was sung at the Parish Church and a large representation from the Alumni attended. The Whatever You Wish Party which took place on Wednesday, Feb- ruary 3, proved to be another successful evening. It was the first of the kind ever held in the Auditorium. It was very striking to note the unexpected response from our many friends, who have contributed their good will to the efforts of the Alumni. The Alumni sponsored many social activities during the year for its mem- bers. Among them was an Initiation Party held in the Recreation Room, and a banquet which was tendered in honor of the graduating class of 1932 and other invited guests. As one of the purposes of the Alumni is to promote interest in dramatic art, the play which is to be presented sometime during the coming winter, is being selected carefully at present. It is with sincerity that we extend a hearty welcome to the Class of '32 who will soon become Alumni members with us, and who, materially, will add strength to our organization in its march to success. The Alumni officers are: Miss Irene Chrzanowska - president, Miss Rose Czarnecka - vice-president, Miss Angeline Delinska - financial secretary. IRENE LITKA, Secretary. .. - -Y - - W W Y . E Education in Our School Commercial education in our school has a much wider purpose than the training of stenographers and bookkeepers. It has addressed itself to the task of training for service in the community, for participation in social life, and for knowledge of, and ability to adapt one's self to business as a whole. Young people trained for the broader and more professional aspects of commercial life have every prospect of finding for themselves highly useful places in business as they demonstrate their fitness for more respon- sible duties. To accomplish this purpose the course provides instruction of two kinds: first, in general high-school subjectsg second, instruction in high- school grade in the special subject, commerce. It is to be noted, however, that the general subjects are all taught with the constant view of preparing the students to use them in business life. ln like manner all instruction in the school is made to serve the special vocational purpose for which the school exists. Added emphasis is placed on the development of those personal qua- lities so necessary for desirable contact with other members of societyg right actions, proper dress, appreciation of services received, right attitudes that lead to a higher type of citizenship and social order. Character training through continuous doing activities of an ethical nature develops within the individual fixed habits and higher ideals of manhood and womanhood and fosters all that makes for right living and good citizenship. To the student of Sweetest Heart comes the advantage of strenghtening his faith. From the Catholic High School, he learns all that Christ wishes him to learn the truth which will save his soul The more he learns of the teachings of his Church, the better Catholic he will be. With a will stren ened and toughened by the battles of his adolescence period the student will be ready for the fray of the great world where the rush and excitement and distraction wear out all who are not endowed with a will of steel With such an education he IS indeed prepared for the battle of life We are not certain what life may have in store for him. It may destroy his health, and blast his hopesg but it cannot change his will if that is firmly grounded on faith and principle ALICE GLOWACKA 32 , . . . . . . . s 9 ' . . . . 9 , . 4... xxx: rrxfxf..-..-:s ..f:.::.-:If 4: 1: :f::-.:f:.-.:,a::.::.-:-1.-2: :Hx ul. .A ,-4. - ff.. -X u .. 3' -- dr. . .
