29 asehall I S ,- , 1 .-1 - I3 This year's baseball team opened the season with a bang. They defeated Browns- ville, Monroe, and Lebanon twice before losing to South Salem. They defeated Cor- vallis 6 to 5, but lost to Albany 4-O and North Salem 4-i. When this was written their record stood at 5-4 for the season and 2-4 in district 8. This year's team is a fairly well balanced outfit, but errors were responsible for two of the four losses to date. Pitchers Royce McDaniel and Ken Kyriss both have ex- cellent earned run averages. February 23 closed the final page of Sweet Home's most success- ful season and most successful sport. On that day, in Corvallis, senior Lynn Garrett and sophomore Bill Keller brought state wrestling cham- pionships home, and the team placed second to Newberg with a score of 45 to 66 for the upstate Tigers. The Huskies placed an unprecedented six men in the finals, as compared to N'ewberg's five, but the Tigers managed more places to go on to eventual victory in the meet. It was an undefeated season for Sweet Home. Every dual match was won, most of them by top-heavy scores. Led by champs Garrett and Keller, the Huskies thrashed opponent after opponent, with such stalwarts as state semi-finalists .lack Payne, Rod Andrews, Ron Weav- er and Jim Price pinning or decisioning their opponents with monoto- nous regularity. Dave Payne, 98-Ib. freshman, Mark Musgrave, l36-lb. senior, and Jerry Weathers, 157-lb. iunior, also were consistent winners through- out the. season, and fought their way as far as the semi-final rounds in Corvallis. To show how well the Huskies dominated state events, junior Jack Payne and iunior Rod Andrews were forced to go against each other in the lO6-lb. class, with Payne emerging as the victor to nail down a third place. Seniors 'Lynn Garrett H48 champl, Jim Price il4ll, Mark Mus- grave ll36l, and Ron Weaver H303 will leave vacancies to fill on next year's squad, but with men returning like Bill Keller, Jack and Dave Payne, Rod Andrews, Jerry Weathers, Dwight Edwards, Billy Richards, and probably a score of others, one wonders whether the team as a whole will suffer any weaknesses at any one particular Weight. Perhaps we can say, Good by, District champs and Hail to the District champs in the same breath. At least we can say one thing: C 2. -I l EH? Vqx f -Q3 fe A . I mga! fifty-one schools started in the state championship matches and we Huskies placed second. Which means that man to man we can hold our own with anybody else, no matter how big the school. And while we are maybe-ing, maybe we can conclude with: Let's go for the state championship in i958! Wrestling In ction Jim Price and Dwight Edwards Jack Payne and Bill Keller Jim McCollum and Nick Mosqueda David Cole, Mark Musgrave, Ted Dow- ell and .lerry Weathers
