Foreword One of the first steps in the erection of a new building is the pouring of a solid foundation. Similarly, one of the first tasks of a student is to construct a foundation con- sisting of knowledge and critical thinking. The contrac- tor goes on to erect a home or an office or a factory, the student proceeds to build his own future. During the past year, masons added additional new bricks to our school, we students should have added to our own characters different types of bricks f bricks representing the inquiring mind, the search for knowledge, and the ability to think. Learning is a continuous processg but it is conceiv- able that one fact learned in elementary or high school might prove to be the one thing that will help to decide a student's career. Too few students realize the importance of education until it is too late. As builders use mortar to hold bricks together, we students should use the facts we have learned and ideas we have formed to build a solid wall of knowledgef' Our 'Neg ability to relate facts and ideas to everyday problems is what will give the wall of knowledgen its strength and value. To insure a strong and durable future we must pro- vide a strong foundation, and this can only be done by hard work and a persistent determination to push on - always looking forward to more and better things. Today, the success of a school depends upon the sup- port given to it by parents and taxpayers. It is only through their help that we can ever hope to receive the guidance and direction needed during our formative years. There is very little that we can do materially to thank them for their help, but can go on and become the leaders of our community - the doctors, lawyers, factory workers, and teachers. Sweet Home High School, as it stands today, is the result of the co-operation of taxpayers, the faculty, the con- tractors, and the students, each group doing its part to make OUR school one of the best in the nation. 9. .NX , L..-,Q 2 I We are blind until we .fee that in the human plan Nolbing ir worth the making if it doe: noi make the man. 'sinf- Our first yearbook is dedicated to DR. CLARENCE SMITH, Administrative Assistant in charge of Sweet Home's expanded building program. Dr. Smith's chief interests have always been the welfare and education of young people. A graduate of Syracuse Uni- versity and possessor of a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Buffalo, Dr. Smith first became principal of a small high school at Fabius, N. Y. He later held the po- sition of principal successively at New Berlin and Greene, New York. At Greene, Dr. Smith instituted a course in agriculture and taught it for the first year or two. At that time, also, Dr. Smith developed an interest in Farm Bureau work, and he left his position with the public schools to become the Farm Bureau Agent of Chenango County, at Norwich, N.Y. However, Dr. Smith's interest in young people never left him, and eventually he returned to the public schools as principal of Cassadaga High School, in Chautaqua County. Subsequently, he gave many years of service as District Super- intendent of the Sixth Supervisory District of that county. Eventually Dr. Smith left his position as District Super- intendent to become Professor of Education at the University of Buffalo, where he remained until his retirement. The students of Sweet Home District are proud to have Dr. Clarence Smith serving them, and they are proud to dedi- cate this yearbook to him in recognition of his unstinting and devoted efforts in the field of education. 5 Dedication Dr. Clarence Smith if 4,,,,,..
