II'I ' I I I esents I First Yearbook THE CRESCENT if Foreword One of the first steps in the erection of a new building is the pouring of a solid foundation. Similarly, one of the first tasks of a student is to construct a foundation con- sisting of knowledge and critical thinking. The contrac- tor goes on to erect a home or an office or a factory, the student proceeds to build his own future. During the past year, masons added additional new bricks to our school, we students should have added to our own characters different types of bricks f bricks representing the inquiring mind, the search for knowledge, and the ability to think. Learning is a continuous processg but it is conceiv- able that one fact learned in elementary or high school might prove to be the one thing that will help to decide a student's career. Too few students realize the importance of education until it is too late. As builders use mortar to hold bricks together, we students should use the facts we have learned and ideas we have formed to build a solid wall of knowledgef' Our 'Neg ability to relate facts and ideas to everyday problems is what will give the wall of knowledgen its strength and value. To insure a strong and durable future we must pro- vide a strong foundation, and this can only be done by hard work and a persistent determination to push on - always looking forward to more and better things. Today, the success of a school depends upon the sup- port given to it by parents and taxpayers. It is only through their help that we can ever hope to receive the guidance and direction needed during our formative years. There is very little that we can do materially to thank them for their help, but can go on and become the leaders of our community - the doctors, lawyers, factory workers, and teachers. Sweet Home High School, as it stands today, is the result of the co-operation of taxpayers, the faculty, the con- tractors, and the students, each group doing its part to make OUR school one of the best in the nation. 9. .NX , L..-,Q 2 I We are blind until we .fee that in the human plan Nolbing ir worth the making if it doe: noi make the man. Why build ,there cilier glorioui if mari unbuilded goer? In vain we build the world unlerr lbe builder alto growr. - Author Unknown fx! .vm 1 'sinf- Our first yearbook is dedicated to DR. CLARENCE SMITH, Administrative Assistant in charge of Sweet Home's expanded building program. Dr. Smith's chief interests have always been the welfare and education of young people. A graduate of Syracuse Uni- versity and possessor of a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Buffalo, Dr. Smith first became principal of a small high school at Fabius, N. Y. He later held the po- sition of principal successively at New Berlin and Greene, New York. At Greene, Dr. Smith instituted a course in agriculture and taught it for the first year or two. At that time, also, Dr. Smith developed an interest in Farm Bureau work, and he left his position with the public schools to become the Farm Bureau Agent of Chenango County, at Norwich, N.Y. However, Dr. Smith's interest in young people never left him, and eventually he returned to the public schools as principal of Cassadaga High School, in Chautaqua County. Subsequently, he gave many years of service as District Super- intendent of the Sixth Supervisory District of that county. Eventually Dr. Smith left his position as District Super- intendent to become Professor of Education at the University of Buffalo, where he remained until his retirement. The students of Sweet Home District are proud to have Dr. Clarence Smith serving them, and they are proud to dedi- cate this yearbook to him in recognition of his unstinting and devoted efforts in the field of education. 5 Dedication Dr. Clarence Smith if 4,,,,,.. The members of the Board have devoted much time and effort discussing and determining policies of the school. Together with Dr. Clarence Smith, ad- ministrative assistant, and Mr. Stanley Podd, chief architect, the Board has spent many days planning facilities to meet the problem of in- creased enrollments during the next five years. The students will always remember and appreciate the work of the Board members who have contributed so much to the general ad- vancement to Sweet Home Central High School. MR. Under the guidance of Mr. Marien, class advisor, the first major activity of the class, a Christmas card sale, was carried out suc- cessfully. Later in the winter the juniors were to be found thoroughly canvassing their neighborhoods in an effort to sell magazine subscriptions. Although these projects required much time and work from the juniors, the pro- ceeds enabled the juniors to enjoy their ntnf first prom and yearbook. The juniors agree that this has been a wonderful year and are confident that next year will be as marked by enthusiasm and success as was this one. Treasurer. - 1, T7 First Row. Left to Right: F. Since the site for the building was already owned and approved by both the district and the state, the vote to build was passed on December 14, 1956. The groundbreaking took place eight months later, on August 14, 1957. In short order, a massive structure began to grow on the chosen site at the corner of Sweet Home and Skinnerville Roads. Thanks to the co-operation of Stanley C. Podd and Associates, architects, and the john W. Cowper, Co. classrooms were opened to students on September 8, 1958. On February 2, 1959, during the second semester, the industrial arts shops, the arts and crafts room, and the gymnasium were opened for use. Later in February the cafeteria was serving meals to both the Junior and Senior High School students. The Sweet Home Junior-Senior High School was finally completed and our building was dedicated on May 17, 1959, less than a year after the laying of the cornerstone. 'I Far from finished! Concert Band Overcoming many inconveniences, the Instrumental Music Department kept a full calendar of activities. In the fall, when school started, there were no lights in the Band Room and being located in an unfinished wing of the building, it was quite cool. Nothing hindered the Band from practicing daily, and when football started, they played at the Maryvale and Pine Hill home games. The Band was invited to play at Civic Stadium for the Balti- more- Pittsburgh football game and the U.B. -Columbia game as part of a mass band which included ten high school bands. The band also marched for a Halloween parade in the Hartford Estates Community and in the local Decoration Day Parade. Seven of the band members attended the All State Sectional Music Festival at Lancaster to play in the 120 piece Senior High Band in November. Three of our Band members performed in the Erie County High School Festival at Wfilliamsville Central School and four other Students played in the Erie County junior High Band at Kleinhan'5 Music Hall in March. The Senior Concert Band played an assembly program at the Elementary School and plan to make an annual event of performing at both Elementary schools. Several soloists as well as the entire Concert Band traveled to Barker Central School to compete in the New York State Spr7ng Music Festival in May, Our 16 piece Dance Orchestra played at the first high school dance held in the Elementary School gym. The group also played at a dance sponsored by the Ellicott Creek Junior Drum Corps at the Ellicott Creek Fire Hall. They also performed for a dance held in the Williamsy'ille High School for the Erie County Music Festival. Our newly formed junior High Band has developed very well and will become more active in the future. The entire Instrumental Music Department presented the first Spring Band Concert in our new High School this year. Fin! Roux Left to Right: S. Wolcott, F. Iahreis, R. Garwood, M. Lord. Sweet Home High School Football FOOTBALL REPORT The Junior Varsity football team of Sweet Home High School underwent a difficult season but one which has given the team the experience and confidence to help them overcome their opponents in the up-coming season. During their first year, the team fared well winning two games, losing four, and tying one game. Coach Kakook and his assistant Mr. Doran, kept their boys in excellent playing condition by enforcing a rigid training and practice schedule. As a result of all the work and time devoted to developing the team we have come through with one that we know will be a source of pride to Sweet Home. Girls' Bowling Each Tuesday afternoon approximately 125 Sweet Home girls, accompanied by Mrs. Georgia Mehl, board school busses which carry them to the Sheridan Bowling Lanes. Once there, the girls purchase bowling shoes, appoint a captain to preside over each lane, and bowl until five o'cloc'k. A league was formed consisting of girls whose bowling scores averaged 110 or higher. The ten girls having the highest scores formed a team to bowl with other schools Girls' bowling has proved to be one of the most successful extracurricular activities of the year. 1' ,O qv 1.
