The first senior class not required to take comps and the last class to live underthe restricted visitation hours, the seniors set the pace for the rest of the school. Due to an excessive budget, the seniors plan on tons o ' fun for the spring. As the seniors prepare to say goodbye to Sweet Briar and hel- lo to the real world, it is definite that they will make their last days here memor- able. 8 Seniors Seniors 9 • ri;te f M [[ t3 f % . Hrl H d mHH A Chinese New Year Memories of Junior Banquet ore few and far between, but those tliat Inave lasted are extra special for ttie Senior Class. Tliey finally got their rings and robes, and wore them both with pride the next day. During the banquet, red- faced girls listened as their odes echoed throughout the Wailes Center, with laughs and cheers adding to the fun. Sitting on the bench, having a younger sister class, getting the ring, and being one year from graduating highlighted the year for the Class of 1986. They absconded with Pink Flamingos, danced at Step Sing- ing, scrubbed the Senior Stairs, and had a helluva time going Around the World in 86 Days. Abriar or abroad, the juniors made the best of this year. Excited? Sydney are some of the transatlantic places some Juniors choose to spend o semes- ter or hvo-off to learn a language, live in different surroundings, or simply broaden their horizons. These Juniors certainly miss friends Abriar , but the constant whirlwind of activity keeps their minds on new places and new faces. It is an opportunity to gain valuable expe- rience, knowledge and sense of inde- pendence. Whether abroad for a se- mester or a year, the experience is un- forgetable! Underclassmen 89 I = Black 8c Blue All Over Party much? The sophomores did. No longer ' Yreshmen, they knew the ropes. Finally able to balance the study party atmosphere of Sweet Briar, the Class of 1987 lived it up. They monopolized everyone at Fall Weekend, and man- aged to pull a profit anyway. Their Q. V ' s kept the spirit up, and now the rock be- longed to them. The general concensus was that it ' s much better being a sopho- more than it is being a freshman, and being an upperclassmenisjust one year away. A slump? It ' s doubtful. This class had too much fun. Traditionally it is the first day the Senior Class appears in their robes, which have been filled with goodies by the Freshmen. Led by their sister class, the sophomores, the class of ' 85 managed to make it to the top of the hill and placed flowers on the Williams ' family grave site. All in all, it was a monumental occasion. 138 Student Life student Life 139 = Get Clubbed One afternoon in early fall, the fresh- man class got clubbed and were in- troduced to both the tapped and joined clubs of Sweet Briar. Every orga- nization was represented, with informa- tion and occasionally refreshments at the respective tables. The highlight of the day was the singing of the Sweet Tones, while the lowlight might have been the monotony of the Earphones! The day proved to be a helpful introduc- tion for the Class of ' 88 to the various organizations and activities of Sweet Briar. 140 Student Life student Life 141 — Stepping Out Sitting on the Golden Stairs. It was the last tinne for the Class of ' 84, and the under classes gathered in the quad to sing their goodbyes as the Seniors pre- pared to step out into the real world. QV identities for the Class of ' 86 were re- vealed — supposedly for the first time — and despite the damp and rainy weath- er, the spirited tradition of step-singing remained intact. W ; ' ??? 142 student Life student Life 143 — Stepping In As always. Fall Step-Singing helped both new and returning students step into the school year. Freshmen got their first taste of Sweet Briar tradition, and Seniors climbed the stairs for the first time as sole proprietors. Juniors had a youn- ger sister class, and the sophomores were satisfied; finally, there was a class below them. And the tradition continues with o night of splashing blue and gold. It was the class of ' 87 versus the class of ' 88 fighting for the honor to place their color on the Hitching Post. Lots of yelling, pull- ing, protecting and laughing culnnin- ated in the freshman class victory over the sophomores, who retreated gra- ciously to take charge of the rock. Paint- ing by numbers in shades of black, blue, gold and purple. For many years now, the Sweet Briar Administration has recognized a need for a new facility to properly and safely house the Sweet Briar art collection. Tau Phi is an honorary society of up- perclassmen chosen fortheiracademic demeanor and involvement in college life. Singing a cape ic, thieir lovely voices enhance many a special occasion on campus, such as Christmas dinner and Parents ' Weekend. After au- ditions in the spring, the Sweet Tones are tapped early in the morning and enter- tain everyone at breakfast. Every two years, a new album hits the charts at Sweet Briar recorded by our own Tones. On the flip side come the Earphones, a tone-deaf, loud-mouthed group of singers with no sense of harmony. Known for their enthusiasm, the QV ' s serve to promote class spirit and unity during their sophomore year. The Bum Chums, otherwise known as the Notorious Ten, ore a group of juniors who spend many a late night in search of those chicken-hearted QV ' s, though there are some who never make it out of bed. As well as sponsoring the Christmas Bazaar and the Bloodmobile, the Bum Chums also escort Amherst County children through the dorms for Halloween Trick-or-Treating. tmummmmmmm TSsmmsBtm Clubs 167 := Center Stage Paints and Patches is an hionorary tap club for students involved in the thieatre department. A narrow 1-0 loss to eventual champion Lynchburg in the Conference semi-final ended the season for SBC, but post season honors were garnered by sophomore Lee Carroll (All-Conference first team, All-Regional first team, and honorable mention Ail-American], ju- nior goalkeeper Shannon Keulwein (All- Conference second team, All-Regional honorable mention], junior Nancy Buck- ey (All-Conference second team], and Chris Corcoran (All-Conference second team], The Vixens reached their third con- secutive ODAC final four with a 2-1 first round victory over rival Randolph- Macon (Ashland]. Season highlights included victories over Hollins, R-MWC, Mary Baldwin, Randolph-Macon, Vir- ginia Tech, Sewanee, and a tie with Wake Forest. Exciting action this season in- cluded a tie with powerhouse Virginia Wesleyan and victories over Rondolph- Mocon Women ' s College and Roanoke. The attack was sparked by Wood, juniors Betsy Nott and Karen Gonya, and sophomores Carol Good- man and Angelyn Schmid. Ferrazzano was a threat in transitional play from her sweeper position, and was ably aided in defense by seniors Nancy McMullen, Whitney Machnik, Lyn Christie and Lenetta Archard. Goalkeeping chores were handled by ' co-cagers El Warner ' 85 and Page Franson ' 87 with 67 and 115 saves respectively. The Vixen spikers finished their season with a record 7-1 1 , a record Layne hopes to improve on next year. Instrumental to the success of the team was the dedication and leader- ship displayed by all returning players, particularly Deanne Dawson, who served as an inspirational leader to the team. Another contributing factor to the Vixens ' success was Layne ' s decision to make freshman Kathryn Ingham the 178 Sports floor leader-setter, running 5-1. A pleasant surprise for Layne was the discovery of junior Ashley Simmons ' offensive talents which were spurred by the superb passing of Kris Whitney. Prize winners in- cluded Disc Johnson on SBC ' s Molson, Senior Training Division, first in dressage and second overall; Shoppy Donnelly, Senior Novice Division, and Girl Conger, Junior Novice Division; both second in dressage and overall in their respective divisions. A Sweet Briar team placed fourth OS a hunt team in the Orange County Team Race in Plans, Va., and Katie Heom on Tiki qualified for the championship class at the Keswick Hunter Trials. In Intercollegiate Horse Show Associa- tion competition, Patty Click placed first in Open Horsemanship on the flat at LaShaun Vetzel won first place in Novice Over Fences. Both were riding against University of Virginia, William and Mary, Mary Washington, and Long- wood. The team ' s with- drawal from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to enter a rebuilding phases was supported by students and facul ty alike. Play this season was highlighted by Ann Menriman ' s steady rebounding and 184 Sports the consistent scoring of guard Jennifer Frost. Frost, a junior and team captain, netted an average of 12 points per game, while contributing 4.2 assists per contest. Page Franson at center was ably supported by rookie Lynn Wein- burg and junior Deanne Dawson. Daw- son returned to the team after spending Winter Term away, and added experi- ence to the club.
