conieMs Seniors walk into the wide world with a variety of talents and experiences. Even though they wear the Rose, they will never grow up, never grow up. See them sitting on the Golden Stairs. The class banners of 1980, 1981 and 1982 represent tradi- tion and vigor, for the colors are passed down from Seniors to Freshmen which renews Sweet Briar spirit in the Un- derclassmen. Faculty members adorned in their academic regalia and fil- led with understanding and enthusiasm summon respect from the students. The Admin- istration steadfastly perform their vital duties, essential to the smooth functioning of the college. Clubs carry on their activities, competing with their counter groups whenever they can. Initiations, shows and chautauquas they scatter through the year, and some- how the sports get mixed in there too. The directory listing names and addresses of all students is an aid when writing a friend. Our advertisers and patrons proceed it; moreover, more candid pictures and the stu- dents ' honors follow the direc- tory. 4

Sweet Briar . . is more than a post office or hamlet. It is a scenic area of 3300 acres in Amherst County, Virginia. Nine months of the year, about 700 young women live in her dorms and study in her academic buildings, library, and when weather permits, one may see a girl studying under a shade tree. The other three months of the year, she houses alumnae who re- turn for reunions, and ten- nis players who participate in the Van der Meer camps. Year-round she serves as a home for many faculty and administration members, both retired and current employees. For a herd of Holsteins and a sta- ble of horses, part of these acres are a pasture and turn-out paddock in which to play and kick up their heels. Sweet Briar may be home to many
