Even though they wear the Rose, they will never grow up, never grow up. See them sitting on the Golden Stairs. The class banners of 1980, 1981 and 1982 represent tradi- tion and vigor, for the colors are passed down from Seniors to Freshmen which renews Sweet Briar spirit in the Un- derclassmen. Faculty members adorned in their academic regalia and fil- led with understanding and enthusiasm summon respect from the students. The Admin- istration steadfastly perform their vital duties, essential to the smooth functioning of the college. Clubs carry on their activities, competing with their counter groups whenever they can. Initiations, shows and chautauquas they scatter through the year, and some- how the sports get mixed in there too. The directory listing names and addresses of all students is an aid when writing a friend. Our advertisers and patrons proceed it; moreover, more candid pictures and the stu- dents ' honors follow the direc- tory. 4 . ' ' ■■' ' iV ' K ' ! Nine months of the year, about 700 young women live in her dorms and study in her academic buildings, library, and when weather permits, one may see a girl studying under a shade tree. The other three months of the year, she houses alumnae who re- turn for reunions, and ten- nis players who participate in the Van der Meer camps. Year-round she serves as a home for many faculty and administration members, both retired and current employees. For a herd of Holsteins and a sta- ble of horses, part of these acres are a pasture and turn-out paddock in which to play and kick up their heels. Sweet Briar may be home to many piBQ people, but to us she is our college. Sweet Briar has at- tracted many young women seeking a liberal arts education. Some high school graduates like the small classes and the extra concern of a well-qualified faculty; others come in hopes of going A Briar on a Junior Year Abroad program. Most of us come seeking to expand our in- terests and strengthen al- ready discovered talents. Sweet Briar gives us a chance to perform in new areas, and we learn to explore and think while we are here. Lasting friend- ships, partying and com- municating are all part of the college experience. Perhaps the friendly, sec- ure atmosphere blankets us from the outside world, but while we live here, we learn how to handle worldly problems. Indeed Sweet Briar is part of the world. Business life goes on every weekday at the Bistro and Book Shop. The Post Office op- erates basically as any ci- ty ' s post office would. When we leave for vaca- tions, there is someone to say good bye to. Sweet Briar is truly a . . . College and Community %% FORWARD The 1979 Briar Patch staff has at- tempted to capture the memories and events of this year in a creative, graphic publication. I hope you enjoy it! Each section has something to complement the others while they all seek the unique spirit which dwells within us. This spirit will remain with us wherever we may go from here; it shall spread to those we welcome from other schools. This year Jane Bartholomew came from St. Andrews University, Wayne Atchison from Washington and Lee University and Celeste Dubuque from Denison Uni- versity, to join our family. When re- membering this academic year, we must put it into perspective with the wordly events of the close national elections, the sinking American dollar, the recognition of Communist China and the Iranian demonstrations — all of which shall influence our lives. Many thanks to the Briar Patch staff for their continued support and en- thusiasm; to Charlie and Mike, our rep and photographer, for their profes- sional guidance; and to all the Sweet Briar family for their advise and un- derstanding. At first Sweet Briar was like a summer camp. Everyone was from all over the country. They iwere different, new, but for the most part friendly. I felt a little taken back by everyone on the first day because they were all dressed up and sophisti- cated. The buildings and grounds were all new and therefore fascinating. The room was a bit disap- pointing. My mind had imagined a glorious dwel- ling with about twice as much space, newly painted walls, the ability to tack things up, a huge bright window, big closets, and spacious bookcases. It all looked so drab but I did not give up hope. The orientation exercises seemed more on paper than they really were. Parties began soon and they were definitely different. I didn ' t know there were such things as preppies. Many of the guys seemed immature. Classes were all exciting but they didn ' t seem that much different ... at first. Wtiat was tlie hardest thing to which you had to adapt? I don ' t know if I ' ve adapted yet . . . Why did you choose Sweet Briar? For a combination of reasons. It is a private. small, and close-knit community. The campus and surrounding moun- tains are very appealing. The academic life is chal- lenging while student- faculty relations are gen- uine. And then there ' s the old Southern way of life and the many traditions. • ♦ I 4 ♦ ' ♦ ■• (back I to r) Laurie Goldsmith.
