1900 — It shall be the general scope and object of the school to impart to its students such education in sound learning ... as shall best fit them to be useful members of society. The Last Will and Testament of Indiana Fletcher Williams Since 1900, these words have been the foundation of this college. In 1976, the purpose still remains the same. Implicit in this fact is tradition, and behind the tradition is history. Much of the tradition is still observed; most of the history is ignored. This book is dedicated to the tradition of Sweet Briar College. It is also dedicated to Daisy Williams, whose name and life are at the root of the history. She is now buried on Monument Hill, along with the members of her family who had the foresight to create history and tradition. It is fitting that they are buried on what is called Monument Hill; for founding a college is indeed a monumental task. J GHZl ' :) T
