•. ' f.f. » December 16, 1958 To the CLns of 1959: If I could add one gift to all you have re- ceived from Sweet Briar College it would be the gift of time — which each of you must find for yourselves — to reflect on this qujs- tion: What will you remember longest and cherish most deeply of everything that has become a part of you during your forr years on this campus? Will it be the beauty of the campus itself — the wide lawns, the sweep of the dells, the marvelous variety of trees and flowering bushes and tulip gardens, the smell of honey- suckle and the majestic backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains? Will it be something you have learned in a classroom or laboratory, which may have awakened an interest you will keep for the rest of your life? Or will it be the influence and example of some of your teachers, whom you will remember long after the subject mat- ter of their courses is forgotten? New friends, perhaps, which you will keep with you, or keep in touch with, wherever in- dividual, post-commencement paths may lead? And the numberless big and little things that have happened to you and to your class in these four years? — the hitching post frenzy, your Freshman Show, and all the dances (especially that first important one) in the Gymnasium, under the trees in front of the Refectory, and on other cam- puses as well; Hurricane Hazel, a picnic at the Lake, the Christmas Oratorio, the Science Symposium, and the Faculty Show; John Ciardi and Arnold Toynbee and a dozen other lecturers and concert artists you didn ' t miss. All this, and much more, including much known only to you, has gone into your ed- ucation at Sweet Briar and become part ol you. Some of it you will keep alive and pass on to your own children. All of it Sweet Briar has given to you. And in return, eac h of you, in different ways, has given this col- lege even more than you have received here. Please know that we are proud of you, and confident that this pride will grow as we hear of the good uses to which you put this many- faceted education: in your own lives and ca- reers, and in your families. Remember Sweet Briar, and please come back to see us soon and often. Anne Gary Pannell President
