•J ' Ji y■ Mrs. Rollins accepts the new Wallace E. Rollins Chair of Religio ai Founders ' Day Exercises, October 15, 1958. Or. and Mrs. Rollins call their collaboration on Jaus and His Miniilry. Dr. and Mrs. Rollins are well known and loved members ot the Sweet Briar Community. Both have devoted their lives to the teaching of religion, with special emphasis on the life of Christ. They have been counsellors and friends to everyone who has been associated with them. Dr. Rollins came to Sweet Briar in 1908 as the first chap- lain and professor of Bible. In 191 3 he became professor of Ecclesiastical History at the Protestant Episcopal Sem- mary in ' irginia. During his twenty-seven years there he frequently visited Sweet Briar. On many occasions he spoke in the chapel services, each time renewing relationships, making new friends, and continuing to be a part of the lives of Sweet Briar students and part of the life of the college. In 1940 Dr. Rollins returned to the campus for his years of retirement. Mrs. Rollins came to Sweet Briar in 1928 as professor of Biblical Literature. Under her guidance the department grew and the name was changed from Biblical Literature to Religion. Mrs. Rollins carried the teaching burden alone for ten years. By her initiative new courses were instituted and Religion was offered as a major in 1933-34. She and Dr. Rollins have not only devoted their time and energy to Sweet Briar students but to college students everywhere, with a valuable book on Jesus and His Min- istry, the product of their combined authorship. This past fall, to express their gratitude, Sweet Briar alumnae, and friends with the help of the Kresge Founda- tion endowed a chair to honor Dr. Rollins. The Wallace E. Rollins Professorship of Religion was instituted with Mrs. Rollins as the first holder of the Chair. To e. press our admiration and gratitude for their con- stant devotion to Svveet Briar, we take great pleasure in dedicating the 1959 Briar Patch to Dr. and Mrs. Wallace E. Rollins. DEDICATION
