■ ■ J ' The Heif to jhi-AftitaticH . . . We at Sweet Briar are proud of the close relationship be- tween faculty and students. Throughout the years Ethel and Sarah T. Ramage have been the dual personification of this bond. Their profound desire to know and to understand each one of us has inspired us to prove ourselves worthy of their in- terest. Their sincerity, illuminated with enthusiasm, has con- stantly guided us in our endeavors. The Ramages have presented us with a challenge which is not only academic but which pervades our entire college experi- ence. This challenge is threefold: it provides the impetus to look at ourselves objectively, to think independently, and to express our ideas. In achieving this goal themselves, they have given us a constant standard to follow. It is with deep gratitude, which we feel cannot be defined in mere verbal expression, that we dedicate the 1956 year book to Miss Ethel and Miss Sarah T. Ramage, professors of English. i

yhU U kou it uill ke . The year 1956 marks a turning point in the history of Sweet Briar College. We greet this golden an- niversary year with devoted spirit as our college stands on the threshold of a new and more productive half-century. Sweet Briar looks with pride at the construction of the William Bland Dew Dormitory; she accepts with gratitude her part of the Ford Foundation Grant. A new Sweet Briar is being built upon the strong and revered foundations that have become her heritage. Administration, faculty, and students have cooperated through the years to establish her traditions on a firm basis and to plan for her future. As a chronicle of the life history of Sweet Briar College, the Briar Patch of 1956 is presented as a tribute to those who have worked for this college during the past fifty years and to those who will continue in their fooisteps throughout the next fifty years. From these pages we may see where we have been, where we are now, and where we are going.
