200 VERNA Over a muddy cattle trail, Mrs. Verna Kelley Arrington made her way from her parents' home in Gulf, Texas, to Sweeny, Texas, in Septem- ber 1927. With only two years of previous teaching experience, she took her pos- ition as principal of Sweeny High School, 1927-29. Mrs. Arrington was also expected to teach English and Spanish classes. From 1929 until 1933, she taught third grade in Sweeny. Leaving the school system, she be- came a bookkeeper for J. G. Smith and Brother and clerked in the Sweeny Post Office. She returned to the teaching profession to teach first grade in Newgulf, Texas, from 1943 to 1952. For the past twenty years, Mrs. Arrington has taught first grade in Sweeny making a total of twenty six years of service to the Sweeny In- dependent School District. Mrs. Arrington's education includes a diploma and permanent teaching certificate from Southwest Texas State Teachers University in San Mar- cos, a bachelor of science degree from Sam Houston State Teachers Univer- sity and a master of education degree from the University of Houston. Included in her educational activi- ties are Mrs. Arringtonis membership in the Gamma Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, a national prefessional geographic fraternity and Eta Psi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma In- ternational Society. Mrs. Arrington has served as president of the Eta Psi Chapter and is now chairman of the State Scholarship Committee. In 1972 the White-Arrington Scholarship was established in honor of the state pres- ident and Mrs. Arrington. A charter member of the local unit of Texas State Teachers Association, Mrs. Arrington has served this organ- ization in almost every capacity. She is also a member of Texas Associa- tion of Elementary-Kindergarten- Nursery Educators, The Texas Library Association, and Sweeny PTA, an or- ganization of which she has been a member for nearly forty years. Mrs. Arrington's many years of hard work have been recognized with several high honors. In 1956 she was presented a Certificate of Honor for Outstanding Service by the Parent- Teacher Association of Sweeny. She was presented the state achievement award by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in 1965, the year in which she was named Teacher of the Yearw by the Sweeny Civic Club. Mrs. Arring- ton has served on various state com- mittees for the selection of textbooks and has held offices and chairman- ships in many, many organizations and committees. This year Mrs. Verna Kelley Ar- rington is retiring after having spent 37 years in the classroom. She has added to the lives of hundreds of stu- dents who remember her with affec- tion and appreciation.

MRS. CLEO C. GRIMES MRS. CLEO C. GRIMES After having spent 39 years teaching in the Sweeny Independent School District, Mrs. Cleo C. Grimes is retiring from her profession. She started her teaching career in a small, two teacher school and has taught grades one through three. Mrs. Grimes received both her B.S. and M.Ed. from Texas Southern University. She has also taken six semester hours of special work at the University of Southern California. Mrs. Grimes is a member of the local and state Texas State Teachers Association. In her 39 years as a school teacher, Mrs. Grimes has been absent from the classroom only six days. She has decided to retire and do some of the little things in life that she has left undone. 199
