Sweeny Coasts ytoAA Title, If -1 ' . By BILL KLUZIK Post Snort: Writer AUSTIN - Fullback Larry Chandler got the hard yard- age and let his smaller team- mates cash in on the points as the top-rated. Sweeny Bull- dogs proved they were Num- ber- 1 with- a 29-7 triumph over Granbury in the state Class QA finals here Satur- day night. 1 The senior workhorse ground out 89 yards on I3 carries as leading rusher of the night and overshadowed Granbury's star tailback. James Hodges, who got 67 on 21. V . It was the ltlth vitztory in a row this year for the un- beaten, untied Bulldogs, who also employed the talents of Lexie Bell and Louis Helm in the victory. The Bulldogs took the open- ing kickoff and immediately threatened when 156 - pound junior Lexie Bell returned 48 yards to the Granbury 43. A seven-yard run by fullback Larry Chandler gave Sweeny aofirst down at the Gran- bury 27, but the Pirates tight- ened and held the Bulldogs on downs. GRANBURY C A M E on strong the first time it got the ball, but two penalties to- taling 20 yards stymied any threat. -The first real threat came when Granbury's Duane Wil- son pounced on a Sweeny fum- ble tby Jim Lindseyl at the 37. The Pirates cashed in on the break. wv GRANBURY SWEENY First downs lfi i3 Net vards rushloo T55 W3 Net yards passing 43 0 Pmses 6-20 0-A Passes lnterceoted bv I 7 Punts-overuse 5-27.8 7-38,5 Perwlllei-vafds 6-49 fr-24 Fumbles lost l 'l w-nmsfavunx While tailback James Hodges and wingback George Rains qarried the load over- land, quarterback Jimmy Tid- wellpopped a 13-yard pass into the arms of Rains for a gain to the 14. Rains carried the next two times, picking up a first down and moving the ball to the three. l-IODGES GOT the receiving call next and caught a three- yard touchdown shot from Tidwell right over the mid- dle. Jerrel Bolton's ldck was good with 11:18 left in the half, and it was that point that gave the Pirates a 7-6 edge at the break. The Bulldogs' air attack was fruitless from scrimmage, but they got their first-half score when speedy halfhack Louis Helm took Tidwell's 48-yard punt and sprinted .57 yards to paydirt. Helm picked up a wall of blockers along the way and followed tackle Robert Monroe over ,the goal line. Samuel Thomas toed the ball for the PAT, hut onmsh- ing tackle Tommy Durant bat- ted it away with his left arm. Sweeny came on in the sec- ond half likea pack of wild canines and scored the first time it got possession. Chande' ler, a hard-charging 203-poun- der, blasted 20 and 25 yards to give the Bulldogs a quick start on an eight-play, 65-yard scoring drive that was climax- .-ed-when Lindsey rolled to his left and scooted tive yards in- to the end zone. 'rms TIME, The Bulldogs?- went for the two bonus points and got them on a pass from Helm to end Elmo Wright. On the ensuing drive, the Pirates moved from their own? , 16 to the Sweeny 49, but ges fumbled and Bob Snead' snared the loose pigskin for Sweeny. Eight plays and 49 yards later, the Bulldogs struck again but with a new weapon' -188-pound senior fullback Kenneth Grovey toted the mail four times and went the last three yards. With nine minutes left in the game, Thomas' first PAT kick was erased by a five-yard penalty, but he promptly booted the leather through the V upright again from the 16- - yard line for a 21-7 cushions As the game progressed, the Brazoria County Bulldogs gradually turned the game in- to a runaway. Granhury could do no right and Sweenyswas just the opposite. The Bulldogs took over at the Granbury 28 when Tid- well, who decided to punt on a fourth down instead of gam- bling a pass, let a minus- three-yarder slip off his foot.
