This was a year no one will ever forget. Days, weeks, months and years of hard work and much determination is what it took to make 1966 a great year. The Bulldogs and Coach- ing Staff put all their hard work to good use and made their dream come true. AA STATE CHAMPIONS I Everyone lived for game night, we, the spectators, not half as much as the players. Those boys in blue were mighty sharp and we were all proud of them. The spirit around school was great, remember in classrooms when we did yells! One thing no one will ever forget is the down town Pep Rallies ! The last time we sent them off tears filled many eyes.-joy, excitement and thoughts of winning or losing. Our Big Blue was off to play STATE. That night in Austin, Texas, will live in the hearts of many, but it will live longer in the minds and hearts of parents, coaches, and yet longer for 30 boys making up the 1966 AA State Champs. We, the spectators, could never really know what all it took to achieve their dream. We are all proud of them, team, coaches, and all that went to make our Bulldogs It was like Coach Ed Waggoner said, 'We can't give all the praise to one player, because they were all great athletes! Yes, they were a fine group of boys with a great coaching staff. Vfhen the boys returned home the red carpet was rolled out and one by one they filed off the bus. Again tears filled eyes. We were AA State Champions. For 20 boys they have played their last high school football and by the honor of Winning State they made good use of day, weeks and years of hard work. It was a wonderful year! For the other 10 boys may their year and years to come be as sugqeggful, Mud-1 1 Luck. To the 1966 Bulldogs and all- that went to make them, we are honored to have Our Big Blue Sweeny Bulldogs represent us as AA STATE CHAMPIONS. CONGRATU LATI ONS ! James Hodges, who got 67 on 21. V . It was the ltlth vitztory in a row this year for the un- beaten, untied Bulldogs, who also employed the talents of Lexie Bell and Louis Helm in the victory. The Bulldogs took the open- ing kickoff and immediately threatened when 156 - pound junior Lexie Bell returned 48 yards to the Granbury 43. A seven-yard run by fullback Larry Chandler gave Sweeny aofirst down at the Gran- bury 27, but the Pirates tight- ened and held the Bulldogs on downs. GRANBURY C A M E on strong the first time it got the ball, but two penalties to- taling 20 yards stymied any threat. -The first real threat came when Granbury's Duane Wil- son pounced on a Sweeny fum- ble tby Jim Lindseyl at the 37. Jerrel Bolton's ldck was good with 11:18 left in the half, and it was that point that gave the Pirates a 7-6 edge at the break. The Bulldogs' air attack was fruitless from scrimmage, but they got their first-half score when speedy halfhack Louis Helm took Tidwell's 48-yard punt and sprinted .57 yards to paydirt. Helm picked up a wall of blockers along the way and followed tackle Robert Monroe over ,the goal line. Samuel Thomas toed the ball for the PAT, hut onmsh- ing tackle Tommy Durant bat- ted it away with his left arm. Sweeny came on in the sec- ond half likea pack of wild canines and scored the first time it got possession. They deserve all the recognition they can get for making this a great year. They performed their marching routines well after the long hours of hard work. The band was bursting with spirit during football season. If it hadn't been for the band getting up early in the morning on Saturdays to attend the pep rallies to see the team off the spirit might not have been so enthusiastic. In April, the band went to San Antonio to march in the Fiesta Flambeaun to rep- resent Sweeny. They really had a blast while there! The people of Texas will remember the name of the State AA Champs for 1967 for only a short time, but the townspeople and the students of SHS will never forget what happened in 1967.
