WHITE SWATAHA TIIWENSHIP SIIHUIIL Bl!!-Illll R. N. KEIM Supervising Principal A Zosendau This brief message is to call to your attention the names of three persons whom' you have met, comment very briefly on their most outstanding traits and permit you to select one as your ideal on whose philosophy your future will be most secure. The persons referred to are Mr. Optimist, Mr. Pessimist and Mr. Realist. Mr. Optimist is always cheerful and happy. He con- tends that all is right with the world in spite of history, Divine prophecy and present facts and conditions. He is jovial though he has walked to the brink of the precipice and knows that the step he is taking will dash him to the rocks below. Mr. Pessimist is never cheerful and happy. Even in his times of greatest success and prosperity, he can convince himself that these are only stepping stones to greater ills and hardships than he has ever known. No person, object or condition is ever just right. His greatest satis- faction comes from viewing dark clouds rather than thinking. of the silver lining. Mr. Realist lives midway up the slope: on the middle ground between Mr. Optimist on the top of the hill and Mr. Pessimist down in the valley. He detects and appre- ciates the finer things of life but, at the same time, he realizes that all that glitters is not gold. He is never lost in the darkness of adversity nor are his eyes blinded by the dazzling glare of prosperity. He seeks facts and reasons which are used to find solutions and control actions. Truth, honesty, accuracy and faith are among his outstanding attributes. You are facing the future. The decision is yours to make. , O. B. BALDWIN Principal Smm '7au' lt is a commonly heard expression: I will put in the time some way! No one puts in time with a definite plan: it is always at blank haphazard. No one who puts in time expects definite results: he only expects to avoid ennui, and get through the hours till something comes along that is worth while. But the expression is an admission that time is being put into something. K Plainly it is being put into a hole, the big, black, bot- tomless pit of vacuity. Nothing comes out of that hole, though oceans of time flow in. lt is one of the most greedy maws in the universe, and one of the least profit- able. Time is far too valuable to throw in there. Time is the one thing that man cannot make, nor can ever hope to make. Though it- is given so freely, it is given most grudgingly-only a second at a time. Moreover, time is what everything else that is worth while is made up of. Time is the universal solvent sought by the philosophers of the world: it may be transformed into all other valu- ables. Think of putting time into the yawning gulf of emptiness! When next you have a chance to put in time, put it into a plan. Have a plan all ready, for you will have no chance to go after it. Time is the most volatile and ef- fervescent of substances. The difference between failure and success in life is largely in this matter of putting in time. Tell me how you spend your spare minutes, and I will tell you how to spend the rest of your life-and what salary you can expect to get for doing it. VWUH O. B. Baldwin, B.S. Louise E. Bishop, B.S. E. How excited we were -our first day in the High School! We spent the day meeting new people, making new friends, and becoming acquainted with our teachers. So that we could consider ourselves really organized, we elected our class officers. 'They were: President, Lee Holbert: Vice-President, Vera Mundorfp Secretary, Charlotte Smee: and Treasurer, Anna Scheib. We also selected our class colors, which were red and white. OCTOBER 24. Last evening we held our annual bazaar. We had been looking forward to it for weeks. It was every bit as much fun as we thought it would be. Our class sold bought candy, and we made a grand profit of S24.8U. How proud we were of our first big success! FEBRUARY 13. This evening we had something very new and entirely different. Instead of the usual Iunior class' play, we had three one-act plays presented by the Freshmen, Sophomore, and Iunior classes. So as Freshmen, we took our first venture into the dramatic world. We were first on the program, and we presented our comedy entitled Buddy Answers an Ad. It was a great success, and we went home feeling very proud of ourselves. SEPTEMBER 9, 1942. Today we returned to our school as Sophomores. After having played very hard all summer we were ready to return and to work very hard all-winter. There were only 88 of us left now. We learned, sorrowfully, that 22 of our classmates were not coming back. We started our year with an election. Our officers were: President, Lee Holbert: Vice- President, Henry Arndtp Secretary, Charlotte Smeep and Treasurer, Vera Mundorf. OCTOBER 9. Tonight we held our bazaar again, the last one for the duration of the war. We had lots of fun. I guess no one will ever forget the good times we had at our bazaars. This year our class sold hot dogs and made a profit of 524150. OCTOBER 31. This evening we held a Hallowe'en party in our gymnasium. What an exciting time we had! Laughing pumpkins and tarry-eyed goblins glared at everybody from the walls. But the girls in their slacks and plaid shirts and the boys in their overall danced on, having a very good time in spite of the spooks and the goblins lurking nearby. SEPTEMBER 8, 1943. School re-opened today with 58 of' us returning as Iuniors. My! How quickly time passes! Iuniors already! Once again we came together to elect our officers. They were: President, Lee Holbertp Vice-President, Henry Arndtg Secretary, Colleen Moore: and Treasurer, Elizabeth'Zart. OCTOBER 5. Today our class jewelry arrived! The rings were distributed and admired by everybody. To say we were proud of them would be putting it mildly. APRIL 21. Last evening we held our Iunior Prom. Our first formal dance! How exciting it was! Dancing in our long swishy gowns-to the music of George Fa.rner's Orchestra! We all had a wonderful time and were so disappointed when the evening finally came to an end. MAY 4. This evening was the closing performance of our Iunior Class Play, Merry-Go-Round. It was a successful project. Everyone enjoyed the play, which was a hilarious comedy. We made an exciting profit of 515621, which we planned to use for our yearbook. SEPTEMBER 6, 1944. Well, here we are again back in school. But it is different this time some- how, for now we are full-fledged Seniors. We elected our officers for the last time. They are: President, Lee Holbert: Vice-President, Marie Zerancep Secretary, Kenneth Bowers, and Treas- urer, Elizabeth Zart. IANUARY 8. Today Mrs. Diehl, our class advisor, called our class together for a meeting and we began to plan our activities for the year, which will be a very full one. We selected as our class flower, the red rose, and as our motto, We'll Find a Way or Make One. We also de- cided to have a yearbook, electing Harry Sheaffer as Editor-in-Chief. MARCH 9. This evening we presented the last dramatic performance of our school days-the Senior Class Play. It was a comedy entitled, Miss Iimmy, in which nine members of our class took part. The character which gave us plenty of laughs was Kenny Bowers in his role as Droopy Bardwell. ln general our play was very entertaining and an immense success. MAY ll. Last evening our class was entertained by the Iuniors at the Iunior-Senior Prom. lt was a farewell affair since it was our last really important school dance. The music was lovely, and everyone danced until the very last moment. Even then we were sorry to see that enjoy- able evening end. I would like to make mention here of our classmates who are in the service of Uncle Sam. They are Lee Holbert, our President, who is serving in the Army: and Clair Deimler and Robert White, who are both serving in the Army Air Corps. May God bless them and bring them safely home again. We are proud of them! We are Seniors now with our whole lives ahead of us. May we remember that the future lies in our hands and may we all do our part to make it a victorious and peaceful future. Our freshman year was tough and long, Our sophomore year smooth as a song, Our junior year was kind of rough, But we got through and didn't blulf. Our senior year is nearly past, It just llew by so awfully, fast: We've really had a lot of fun, We'll hate to see our school days done. Our teachers were so kind and true, They very seldom made us blue, They helped to keep us in our place, We worked together lace to face. But now we'l1 have to say adieu, And hope your days are happy, too, So long, dear friends, and teachers true, We've got a real big job to do. DOROTHY SPEESE 77am Many, many years ago, It almost seems that long, you know, A crowd of boys, a group of girls, Gazed at a building frightened as squirrels. The grade school days had drawn nigh For our class of Swatara High. Gay salutes from far and near To old classmates, oh so dear, The sound of a bell, a stern teacher's voice, Soon caused us to wonder why we reioiced. But the days, weeks, and months speedily went For all the young ladies, and even the gents. There were many ups and downs, mostly up, To those patient teachers should go a cup. Enter to Learn in our ears is still ringing, In harmony with Leave to Serve and our singing So now from our school days we will go Toward the light of the future--see it glow! CHARLOTTE SMEE Our High School days were happy days, That we will not forget. The teachers, students, and the school, We leave with sad regret. First Chorus Our thoughts will always travel back, As we go on our way. We'Q use the aims you taught to us At work, at school, at play. Farewell, dear friends, We now must part. We wish our luck to all As in the future we must go To rise, to gain, or fall. Second Chorus Schoolmates, from you we now must leave. We'll always think ol you When into life's hard school we turn We'll wear our gold and blue. Soon I shall know the destinies of the class of '45. These amazing revelations will astound you with their daring truthfulness and will unveil the hidden for- tunes of tomorrow: Ah! The mist is clearing now and before my eyes I see a young lady danc- ing. It is that talented jitterbug from Swatara, Mileva Kosutic. Her winning personality and dancing feet will bring her fame and fortune. Also I see an- other famous character from Swatara. It is Kenneth Bowers the great comedian, who is rolling them in the aisle with his hilarious comedy: but we must also give credit for his outstanding success to the girl who writes his scripts, Beverly Pretz. The crystal ball is clearer, and now I see Dorothy Speese about to intro- duce her marvelous skating technique to her many enthusiastic fans at the Hershey Sports arena. At the Hershey Ballroom I see our own little Nellie Smith lending her golden voice to the swing and sway music of Sammy Kaye. A large concert hall is now coming into view where the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra is making its appearance. Seated at the piano is Eliza- beth Zart. Now Virginia Hanshaw is making her entrance. She is about to ren- der a solo on her Stradivarius. In the distance can be seen a large landing field where the flying in- structor is none other than Henry Arndt. To the right is an airplane factory where Robert Kohl, Ioseph Romozi, and Ralph Sellers are the mechanics who are keeping 'em flying. At a naval base I see Gilbert Speese of the U. S. Navy taking his exam to qualify as a Gunner on a V-6. Now the scene is changing to an army camp where our class President, Lee Holbert, is about to enter officers' candidate school. Still another branch of the service is represented, for I see Donald Santoni looking mighty handsome in the uniform of the United States Marine Corps. I am sure they will all be a great credit to their country. Iust a short distance from the army base stands an army hospital where Betty Arnsberger, Evelyn Snavely, and Mildred Duncan are nurses of the Cadet Nurse Corps. ' Inside another hospital a very efficient and capable looking woman is coming into view. It seems to be Barbara Kleinsak. Yes, it is-Doctor Barbara Kleinsak. With her is her assistant, Martha Schreiner. The two smiling nurses walking up their corridor in their crisp white uniforms are Frances Himelsbach and Emma Williams. Nedra Smith is also wearing the uniform of the proud profession of nursing. In the lovely new courthouse nearby, Mary Crissman and Mary Mrljak are taking dictation on their stenotype machines. lust around the corner at Thomp- son's Business College, Irma Arcipretini and Florence Beistline are teaching students how to operate office machines. Down the street farther I see Dout- rich's store where Carl Haas, who started asa salesman, is now manager. The interior decorator now changing the window display of the store is Geraldine Stouffer. The next scene moves to the Telegraph Press where Daniel Radanovic is starting out as a junior' reporter and George Gable is sports editor. Close by at the Patriot and Evening News several other Seniors are working. Lois Sheaffer is busily pounding a typewriter, while Harold Fackler, editor-in-chief, is giving Mary Spitler last minute instructions on her new assignment for the paper. A copy of a newspaper is appearing now. Let's see what it says. Here is a picture.of a distinguished looking man named Harry Sheaffer, who has just been elected senator from Pennsylvania. With him is his confidential secretary and advisor, Marie Zerance. Here on the sports page is a big write-up about Iohn Brunner, professional basketball star, former- high scorer for Swatara High. And what is this I see? Virginia Mitchell has just sold another of her beau- tiful paintings to the national art gallery. Here is Betty Wagner's picture. It says she has recenty had published another volume of her unique poetry. The page is turning to the fashion section. The lovely creations on this page were made by Charlotte Smee, foremost designer. And the charming gowns on the next page were styled by Helen Brown. The paper is vanishing, and in its place three well-dressed girls are de- scending the steps of the magnificent capitol building where they are em- ployed. They are Gladys Etnoyer, Mary Lescanec, and Agnes McQuaid. At a nearby restaurant they are having lunch with Iune Walters, Martha Gingrich, and Anna Eichinger, employees of the Bell Telephone Company. Walter Bowerman is just arriving at the office of the Bowerman Trucking Company where he is president. The receptionist in the outer office is Mar- garet Dill, and the pretty private secretary in his office is Catherine Raudensky. Take good care of your health if you don't want to meet up with Meade Packler, for the crystal ball tells me he will open a funeral parlor. 'The crystal ball shows a large beauty culture school where Colleen Moore, Kathleen Still. and Elizabeth Gornik are receiving the fundamental instructions as to how to give permanent waves. Esther Wert is just arriving at the Oberlin Grade school for her first class. Yes, she is again going to grade school, butfas a teacher this time, not a stu- dent. One of the pupils is Billy Kimberlin, Ir.. son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kimberlin. Mrs. Kimberlin is the former Miss Nancy Bingaman. The crystal ball reveals a stately young woman taking a journey out of the country. Sarah lane Spott's ambition to be a missionary must have been fulfilled. Entering a school for voice culture is Virginia Kurkowski. Who knows, she may be another Lily Pons. Behind the reservation desk at the Park Lane Hotel is jane Potter whose ambition is some day to be the manager of this exclusive hotel. Oh! Whom do I see here? It looks' as if it might be I. It is! And I'm about to open my new beauty parlor in Enhaut. The crystal ball is clouding now. It will foretell no more, but I am glad to know that the class of 45 are successfully embarked on their chosen careers. And as class prophet, I want to extend to them my best wishes for a happy and successful future. t VERA MUNDORF. ii ,R Ri? Qs 55 SJ Q Ei is JZ!
