1, 1 . .1 t Rutgers Hvenue Elementaru Memortes of elementary school are far from elus1ve for the Rutgers Avenue group ln those days of few ll'lhlblIl0l'lS dull moments were few and far between MISS Prtce and her goldf1sh welcomed the be glnmngs of the class of 59 on that f1rst memor able day of school Ah the Joy of learnmgl The class r ced through work book after work book and then of course there were the fascmattng stones about Farmer Jones who laughed and laughed Mmes of musical talent were dlscovered to toot on tonettes under Bxlly Medford also seemed to have enough spare txme to k1SS all the g1rls The cult1vat1on of when the class began Mxss Moran However the mlnd was well under and 1n more than one f1eld wav by the flfth grade Mlss Moore constantly crted I want your un d1v1ded attentlon for mmds too often wandered to the f1ner thmgs of l1fe such as loll1pops One Valentlne s Day Gene Melcher gave one of these treasured treats to each one tn the class Addts G1lf1llan was so overjoyed she couldnt restst ktsstng h1m Hours were spent on the playground The track was a challenge and was met by Susan Allen who klcked up her heels for etght laps w1th out stopp1ng Betty Ann McCorkel was alsoahearty ch1ld and succeeded IU pushlng Joe Moran tnto a mud puddle The boys spent long hours on the baseball f1eld Thexr efforts were encouraged by the g1rls who sat on bars and who seemed more apprec1at1ve of the bovs talents than of yore As slxth graders the class of 59 d1splayed thetr wh1te safety belts w1th pr1de although lf wasnt qulte as amusmg to perform the actual duty as had been Lmaglned However the long cold hours on corners were forgotten after MISS McCall1n rewarded the class w1th a day 1n the country Also durtng th1s year the art of square dancmg was mastered The g1rls sat w1th bated breath when lf was boys choxce who would Dave Grogan choose Everyone knew Cub Cratsley would select Betty Gemm1ll The long hours OUISldB of school were passed ln vartous ways Ntca Faxrbanks front yard was the scene of constant actlvlty Gene Melcher and Joe Moran contested wlth each other over Ntca as a partner tn the Lone Ranger game CGene at one time galned NICBS favor by havlng a btrthday party and havlng Nlca as the only glflj June Heckman s garage was the scene of the s cret and mysterxous meetmgs of the Owl s Nest club ln the afternoon the bovs gathered at Dave Grogan s and the g1rls at Carol Honnold s to plav basketball However strav basketballs somehow seemed to roll from the Honnold s to the Grogan s Sometimes the boys seemed to en Jov pract1c1ng at a lower basket one wh1ch was sttuated at Carols house The Battle of the Grogan Garage cannot be forgotten nor can the peanut butter pepper sandw1ches wh1ch the bovs choked down at the hands of the g1rls Gone are those davs but not the memorles .
