College Hvenue Elementaru Can we ever forget the memorable t1mes spent together 1n our younger years at College Avenue Elementary School? L1ttle d1d we know what was ln store for us when for the f1rst tlme we hesltantly prlnted the wobbly letters of our names under the careful dlrectlon of Mrs Enders Susle Marsh and Johnny Thur man two of the more promlsmg art dllettantes had an unfortunate acc1dent 1n the kmdergarten room when they faxled to estlmate the strength of the pa1nt closet After labor1ously cl1mb1ng to the top thelrspeed ofdescent was emphaslzed by the re echomg crash of break1ng glass as the cablnet collapsed Our second step towards llteracy was taken 1n f1rst grade w1th our 1ntroduct1on to Sally D1Ck and Spot and thelr fascmatmg adventures 1n our flrst readmg lessons Our reading skllls were further developed 1n thlrd grade by the dreaded drllls of Mrs Wxtter Under Mlss McKre1ght an av1d advocate of the f1ner arts we held a poetry program for our parents Raymond Pope broke mto a storm of tears when he became stage struck and forgot h1sl1nes but Mnke Becker the master of ceremon1es evldenced slgns of early leadershlp when he overcame thls dlsturbance by statmg that The show must go onl Everyone looked forward to recesses There was the usual free for all between the boys and glrls over possesslon of the k1Ck baseball courts Jlm Borden and Stephen Crane were generally chosen as the boys captams and Sus1e Marsh and Chrls S1pler as the glrls captams because they were able to k1ck the ball over the fence The less athletlcally 1ncl1ned swung on the swmgs or played a rousmg game of hop skotch w1th paper cl1p chalns Fxfth grade and Mxss Wlseman brought us the flISI gllmpses of past h1story as we learned about castles moats and knlghts of yore Brave S1r Dav1d Shute underestlmated h1s power as he charged hand flrst through a classroom door held shut by two fa1r demolselles who preferred not to be rescued Dav1d however had success 1n other flelds A club was formed in wh1ch a k1ss was a necessary entrance requlrement He was a charter member along w1th Johnme McQuade Jay Lord Jeb Turner Sldney Johnson and thelr glrl frlends In s1xth grade w1th Mrs Wrlght s ever present maxlm Self Control wrltten on the black board we learned to subdue our bolsterous natures Mr Swayne asastudentteacher added to our class h1s prowess as a champlon k1Ck baseball player and best of all a televlslon set' For one month we never mlssed an eplsode of Lunch wlth Uncle Pete or Let Sklnner Do I Occaslonally 1f we were exceptlonally good we wereallowedtowatch Hollywood Play house 1n the afternoon Wlth th1s flne background behmd us we were ready to face the cruel world and J un1or H1gh School . , . .
