Brow . s n I foreword XIX IH 1-Pl-f f C C HO STRQ is EO The past year has marked a turnlng polnt 1n the h1story of Swarthmore H1gh School The f1re wh1ch has drast1cal1y changed so many th1ngs IS sttll l1v1ng 1n our 8 OOA M homerooms our treks through he puddles between bu1ld1ngs or our crowded conferences on the unwashed cafeterla tables and 1n the overpopulated alcoves next to the rums But school has gone on and actually almost nothlng has bcen left off the schedule These mterlm years between the old and the new may be uncomfortable but they are the cornerstone of the Swarthmore Htgh of the future lt 15 to th1s sp1r1t of transltlon that the year book IS dedxcated The 1959 Cornerstone IS an attempt to look at the school from the vantage po1nt llke the school th1s year but we have trled to 1nclude all the essentlals Unfortunately we have had to exclude some facets of school l1fe because of lack of space We hope however that If will serve to portray the sp1r1t of thls year of change a year whxch w1ll never agaln be dupl1cated ID d1ff1cult condltlons or 1n accompllshmentl XXX of the Senior Class. Facullu and Hdminislralinn The fire has not made it any easier for Swarthmore 's faculty and administration than for the students. The burden starts with Mr. Morey and Mr. Bush, who have valiantly put the school district and the high school back into operation. The office people who can be seen typing, filing, and passing out supplies or delivering absentee lists, have been no less busy, with many jobs now having to be done twice a.day. The faculty has continued to maintain its high standards of teaching despite miss- ing books, impossible hours, and shortened periods. We of the upper classes have been sorry to see so little of the Junior High teachers, many of whom are an important link in our own education. The only traces of them are belated blackboard assign- ments and 12:25 flashes as the doors close and the bulletins are read. In the nearer past and the present are the more familiar faces of the morning shift. With them we have puzzled out word order and analyzed Shakespeare. Now that we have traced the development of nation- alism, struggled with the functions of X and the activity series of metals, and done our push-ups, we realize how much of a contribution these teachers have made. Long after the surprise quizzes and im- possible exams are forgotten we will re- member the units they went over and the good habits they taught us. We can even choose between a wavy or a straight border! The only homeroom problem brought up typi- fies the many problems facing this year's Cabinet, because of the splitsession system.Janice Carroll, Junior High Cabinet representative brings up the issue of Senior High disturbances during Junior High Classes. After a lively discussion on this and other problems, the motion for adjournment is presented and carried with little objection. Although the novel functions of Cabinet may not be continued under normal conditions, they have provided an enlightening change from the perhaps too-well-established traditional proced- ures. -1-1-. V H ,Z .I . f. fy M, A we 7 ' Every Tuesday evening, a group of young musicians gathers to provide its own pre- dinner music under the irreplaceable leader- ship of Mr. Holm. After much meticulous tuning and arranging of music stands, Mr. Holm finally has a chance to say, Let's take the Bach, and remember, only a whisper. The vio1in's begin to pulsate with vigor, and reward- ing sounds fill the air, even though there are occasional questionable rumblings from the per- PT' Jr V94 FRN- ,- cussion section. Although the commentis some- times made, It'1l sound different with the brass section...By the way, where is the brass section, the marvelous all-male tuba sec- tion is always present. Mouth-pieces acquire chocolate cooky linings as the rehearsals pro- gress. Without even men- tioning celebrated names like the Garnet Warrior , 'Blood and Thirst , 'Thadideous , or Jolting Jeb , even the most unenlightened knows immediately that you are speaking of football at Swarthmore High. How can anyone forget the blocking of the Terrible Two , CL. Si NLD, the l.B.M. machine that Bill Medford carried in his helmetg or the time Charlie Dietz taped himself to the training table? Names like 'Coffin Corner , Hopping Hal , and Cinematographer will go down fi the annals of time along with the fearless- .ess of lion-hearted Ken Hewes, the questions of Bill Rowland, and the unfailing loyalty of squeaky Sid Johnson. Combine these men with the formidable wall of Grogan and Lew- ickig toss in Brodie Crawford, the original quadruple threat man, Qfullback, halfback, endjg stick in spirted Jim Erwin and unequaled John Thurmang add Dave Houtz for spirit, devotion, and relentless drive, mix in acouple trips to -1747 North Broad, the cheerful spirit of Doc Ripper and Shorty , Mr. Swan's nightly visits at Football Camp, Saturday afternoons in Media, and Coach's dramatic achievement in the Halloween Pep Rallyg let stand for three months of long, sweaty, and dedicated hours and you have Football-Swarth- more High - 1958. ,. The sight of Miss Allen diligently rest- ing her girls in the gym with their legs propped up on benches because They haven't been getting enough sleep, is one episode that won't soon be forgotten. Of the many games played, two will be re- membered above all: the Westtown game for its score of ten to zero, and the final Springfield game for its excitement. Never before did the ball fly up and down the field so often. As a result of all this ac- tivity, the team came out undefeated, a trib- ute to their skill and Miss Allen's coaching. As each game became more important and exciting, the Girls Basketball squad worked towards an undefeated season. When an overflow of nervous energy was built up, a few players were able to work off some of this energy through constructive means, such as knitting at accelerated rates, while others, less construc- tive, have been found chewing on fingers and nails. The two co- captains, Betty Ann McCorkel and Margaret Brownell, along with the unmatched guidance of Miss D., have led the team to a highly successful season. Betty Ann, it has been rumored, hypnotises her opponents. Margaret, who is sometimes hard to find, shoots from the most extraordinary places, but manages to make the ball go exactly into the basket.
