lf anyone was fortunate enough to be in the vicinity of the band room on a Tuesday or Thursday morning. this year. at eight o'clock or more accurately eight-ten, he would have been greeted by well-prac- ticed notes drifting from the select group of instru- mentalists who comprised this year's orchestra. To obtain the desired balance of instruments, Mr. Holm chose from last year's participants in orchestra. some of the better musicians to constitute the present or- chestra. However, the viola section. until this year consisting of one player, was augmented by import- ing a fifth-grader from Rutgers Avenue. Unfortunately, the painfully achieved balance disappeared on the days of Glee Club rehearsals when many of the or- chestra's members were absent. On these days. the violin section was reduced to three players. a com- bination which produced some unusual auditory ei- fects. The orchestra was able this year to present more interesting and challenging music in assembly pro- grams and in the combined Orchestra and Choral Concert than previously, because of the higher cali- ber of its members. Wagner. 1241 In keeping with the fine tradition it has established over the years, the Swarthmore High School Band, under the able leadership of Mr. Robert M. Holm, once more lived up to its high standards. both as a musical and as a service organization. From football season to Memorial Day, Mr. Holm, work- ing closely with Captain Iohn Fischer, guided the band through all kinds of weather, literally and figuratively. Starting the year with only a nucleus of last year's mem- bers tmost of whom had graduatedl. Mr. Holm had iust three weeks in which to get the band into marching con- dition: music, uniforms, and formations had to be perfected. But prepare it he did, and the Band was off to a good start at the first whistle. After a football season, interrupted by storms and sub- freezing temperatures, the Band made its annual trip to Chester where it marched in the Hal1owe'en Parade. This activity was followed by a fund-raising drive, for which band members were loaded into Army trucks and chauf- feurred around Swarthmore and Rutledge providing back- ground music for the twirlers and color guard who col- lected Bucks for the Band. This year six members won places in the District Band which held its annual festival at Octoraro High School. A long winter of hard practicing, transformed the march- ing musicians into a full-fledged Concert Band. which gave its annual performance on May 23rd.
