Bonnie looks pretty cheerful, Gunnar can't be very strong. .pa-an Having been drilled by Miss Zimmer, we faced our Junior year well armed with good study habits. We start oil' with a bang, Gunnar smashed up his car. Next came the Zimmer parties and the hypnotic powers of George Hansell. At Andy Roxby's we learned the finer arts of gambling. Amidst the fun, came five-hundred word themes and World Affair Councils in history. Miss Armstrong opened windows to refresh our memories. Those who took Physics felt the impact of Mr. 0ppenlander's tests. German students cramped Herris style by writing joke in their German books in appropriate places. Meanwhile our culture was not neglected. Taken by Miss Hancock to Cedar Grove, we saw the love message of an eighteen century blade scratched on a window pane. From Mrs. Wagner, we learned that development is a hodgepodge of green, orange, and purple. Having learned the Cha Cha Cha and the Mambo in gym, we are now also well on our way to becoming social successes. At our class party, several people por- trayed teachers very accurately. The boys amused everyone by playing basketball. From fishy-smelling paint and lots of hard work, emerged a revolutionary Junior Prom. Instead of a center-piece on the floor, we departed from tradition and let ours hang from the ceiling. We also had semi-three dimensional figures. We look back with mingled sensations at our Junior Year with thanks to Wally Seward who pulled us through and ahead to our Senior year. We are sure to do well in the field of sports with Cal Coleman and George Pappas as co-captains in football and with Barbara Ziegenfus as captain of the Hockey team. We assure you that we will do the best job possible. Left to Right, First Row: D. Wagnon, -B. Wright, B. Wilson, H. Steigelman, B. Turner, B. Sublette. Second Row: R. Trosley, C. Wright, C. West, E. The Sophomores' biggest pitfall fTime Chartsll remained an unbroken tradition this year, although we had the benefit of a simplified form. However, much as we hated to admit it, classes were interesting as the teachers struggled to find new methods to drum the stuii ' into our heads. We quickly learned the meaning of uprobadio- num habebimus as well as other essential facts. The yearly trip to the University Mu- seum was uneventful expect for the presence of some college boys whom the girls looked over instead of the mummy cases, as was intended. One of the highlights of the year was the class party. Everybody pitched in and helped, the parents as well as the kids, mak- ing it the best party we had had for a long time. The skits hy the parents and by our classmates, the song and dance groups, the men s fashion show, and the charleston act were all very humorous, to say nothing of our glib masters-of-ceremonies. Besides our school work, extra-curricu- lar activities also took up much of our time. Before school in the morning, sleepy tenth graders could be spotted along with others making their way to school for chorus, band, and orchestra. By afternoon we were fully awake f?l and ready to do our share in establishing good records for our sport teams here at S. H. S. Although we have had a lot of fun as Sophomores, we are looking forward even more to our .lunior year. ,CC C1 C5 .Cay 4 li oo 'Q .ff -J . 39 SWA -if 'M-ann.. Ninth grade starts with an early exposure to Shakespeare's devious expression. Tenth grade brought on Hammurabi's code and a general case of writer's cramps along with time charts. Then we went to a year of ex- tremes--from punching holes in Kuder Pref- erence Tests to dipping into VValden Pondw with Thoreau. Variety is the spice of the Senior English, including all the final touches from 0'Neill to Ogden Nash. Ed Collins' report on Dreiser in Mrs. Mathews, English class on modern fiction is greeted with mixed reactions. Some are calmly taking notes, but others seem in need of further explanation. ff' Left to Right: Mr. Henderson, Mr. Duncan, Mr. Miller, Mr. Klemmer. N 17 r In ninth grade, math took a sneaky turn. For the first time we realized why X and y were in the language. Plane geometry kept us busy proving figures con- gruent, while during leisure time we watched aghast as Mr. Klemmer proved that one equaled two. Being carefree by nature, most of us chuckled our way through Algebra II with Mr. Duncan. Those lucky enough to study trigonometry and solid geometry came out as successful sailors, carpenters, and artists of the third dimension. ome Trigonometry students solving problems in dlus measurement, while Mr. Klemmer watches r mistakes. K -Q All biology classes love the little antics of a moving amoeba. We were engrossed in our Chemistry, but the follow ing class did not appreciate the value of our ex periments. In the science department Miss Barten, Mr. Marish, and Mr. Oppenlander are our experts at S. H. S. Miss Barten presents the biological wonders,' of nature, while Mr. Marish and Mr. Oppenlander expound on physics and chemistry phenomena. In these classes experiences range from bottles of oxygen, formaldehyde, the internal combus- tion engine, and smoldering sulphur, to un- balanced equations. Thanks to the Fire Squad... This year, the Red Cross Club, sponsored by Miss Strouse, included many new activi- t.ies. Among these were making place mats and stuffed toys, knitting afghan squares, and sewing baby clothes. The girls hope that they, themselves, will be able to take their projects to the hospital in the near future. The illustrious members of Mr. Klem- mer's fire squad dash madly about the school, slamming windows, heaving against doors that won't stay open and pointing hoses at passing teachers to make sure their par- aphernalia is functioning properly. The annual homeroom drives were attacked with enthusiasm, resulting in many varied projects to earn money. We started our 1956 hockey season with six returning letter-girls and many others from hockey camp who were rarin' to go! After a few weeks of Miss Allenis coaching, we started the ball rolling and defeated Haverford, Westtown, and Ridley Township. Lexi, we met Lansdowne and hit our only snag, losing by one point. We soon recovered to defeat our last three teams, Media, Upper Darby, and Springfield. For the second week of practice the boys ran through snow, puddles, and first graders' snowballs. However, spring found the boys practicing on the track rather than in the streets. The quarter-milers, performing before the season in the Penn Relays, had to push especially L or the track men hard for places on the relay team. These envied positions were even harder to get since two of the State Champions of last year returned, Cal Coleman and Scott Pickard. Boys Chorus-3 4 Basketball 3 Varsity 4 Base ball 3 Varszty 4 Football Varszty 4 Intramurals 3 Varstty Club 4 Yearbook Committee-4 Thirteen years ago we took our first step out from our protected homes into the wide world. Now about to take the biggest step yet, we pause a little to remember our first. How important we felt on our way to school that first day of kindergarten! We were going to school! We were grown-up! And yet, weren't we carrying blankets for our unappreciated daily naps forced on us by our teachers? ,loan Hemenway became especially mature when, slightly sleepy from her nap, she slipped on the jungle gym and broke her arm. Our progress in second grade was marked by numerous birthday parties. One time we even made the Swarthmorean when, after exchanging gifts, we exchanged the measles. At the end of the year Donnie Poole gave our first class party. Third grade marked the growth of an interesting game which has lasted through- out our school years, i.e., Girls Chase Boys and vice-versa. The favorite excuse to get out of reading class fwe even did it thenj was digging worms for the robins Beth and Mimi brought to school. Most exciting in fourth grade were the weekly trips to the movies to see what had happened to Jungle Woman since we left her the previous Saturday afternoon. Even though we were growing, our appetites for the cafeteria food didn'tg and despite the teachers' sharp eyes, we slyly disposed of our food in napkins. While in fifth grade, the College Avenue boys became Big-Chief-Rain-in-the-Faces and Texas Rangers at Hugh Morrison's house, and Joan Harrar gave our first girl-and- boy party, at which Spin the Bottle was Case his tor Sixth grade! While the College Avenue gang was fighting over the cherished safety posts, the Rutgers Avenue kids were prepar- ing to sing in the High School Christmas program, where they formed a Christmas tree and stole the show. flf you don't be- lieve it, ask one of them.i Both schools planned eagerly for their last May Day. At Rutgers Avenue, we crowned Bonnie Moxey and Pete Kroon, while Fred Bloom and Joanne Shearer reigned over the festivities at College Avenue. On to High School! All summer long the girls planned what to wear the first day of IHIGHU school. Seventh grade dancing class and eighth grade boys were the subject of long telephone conversations, as the girls turned their thoughts toward first formals and the boy next door. After a big weekend of parties, we crawled out of bed to join Mr. ,Iamison's six o'clock Monday Morning Bird Walks. Our social advancement reached such a high point in the eighth grade, that the teachers became concerned with the Going Steady problem. It seems there was a circu- lation of friendship rings fwhich, by the way, are still in use today.i This led to a Going Steady Panel which proved absolutely nothing. All other problems forgotten, we concentrated on making clown costumes for our last Gym Nite . Algebra and Latin became our paramount worries in the ninth grade, although the villagers were most concerned about the after school rush to Michael's. Mr. Hall, the swoon of those Freshman girls lucky enough to have him, ran an all-girls-after-school class for Ruth, Susan, and Mimi. introduced. G- I, U' lj. , 5' 1' fig. iw-'A' iff' By tenth grade we were really in the swing of it. Time charts were easy as hrothers, sisters, cousins, and friends had passed down theirs for us to copy. Our last minute hurrying and scurrying inaugurated a Procrastinatofs Cluh, founded hy a har- assed teacher, Miss Zimmer. Our last French and German hanquets were followed closely hy the class party and a memorahle imita- tion of Pearl Bailey hy Fred Bloom. Our first hig dance, Carousel, was presented in the spring with much success. A party at the Old Mill, given hy Jan, Jane, and Marianne, finished the year off with a hang. By eleventh grade, most of us had got- ten our drivers' licenses and were patroniz- ing the Chester Drive-In. Winter hrought a series of parties at Cary's and skating f'?l on the Crum. Nevertheless, we found time to decorate for our ,lunior Prom, Paradise Islandfi and even the pouring rain could not dampen our spirits. After a summer that was all too short and hot, we emharked on our anticipated senior year as leaders of the school. At the class picnic we hecame reacquainted with our friends and welcomed Nevaz Panday, our foreign exchange student from Pakistan. Yvhile the foothall team was racking up an- other undefeated season, the rest of the class turned oriental and were seen carrying Japanese hodies over to the gym. Oriental Fantasyw was hardly over when we had to buckle down and get to work on our Senior themes. Now that Hamlet, Crichton, and the class party are over, we look forward to graduation with great expectations. To the mistreated muscles of the girls' gym classes, we leave a tube of slightly used liniment. Mr. Falcone's morning Seminar does leave to the future fire squad, five extended abstraction ladders.
