iiansturp In the fourth grade we gave our first play Sokar and the Crocodlle for which we made our own costumes from old sheets and burlap bags During th1S year B1ll Huey was the edltor of our famous newspaper Hlghllghts of the Week We took some more trips that year but on the way home from the planetarlum our bus broke down near Darby much to our dellght In the fifth grade the Rutgers Avenue Choir was formed and sang at the annual spring concert Our now experlenced dra matlc club gave an or1g1nal production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs e made our own stalned glass wlndows after a V1Slt to see them made professlonally whlle at College Avenue Mlss Wiseman mtroduced us to the constructlve pastlme of weaving Sixth grade brought many partles 1n Dave McCahans cellar where h1s gulnea pigs provlded much entertainment We be came lnternationally minded when Robin Colquhoun came from England and the boys began to study about Hawall after Phoebe Lukens dld a hula hula dance After being the big wheels ln ele mentary school Jumor High was quite a let down' We will never forget Miss McK1es llttle bell' After belng mtroduced to danc1ng class we became soclal mlnded We gave a good old fashioned barn dance at Emmons and a terrlfylng Hallowe en party at Mush s We prox ed our worth by dolng a bang up Job of the scrap drlve Nlnth grade' That was the year George Storck made hlS ninety yard run for a touch down against Marple Newtown What a thrill' The class moaned every time we saw a new substltute algebra teacher Wasn t algebra hard enough wlthout having a new teacher almost ew ery week? The year ended w 1th our first final exams but we managed to suruxe them Our sophomore year started off w 1th tu outs for Chorus and stlffness from cheerlead ing and football practlce To get lnformation for our Time Charts we took a trip to the Parkway Museum in Philadelphia Miss Barten s bl0lOgy classes proved entertaining as well as educational We fairly ln ed with frog crayfish and the llke Our first class dance Club 48 was wlthout a doubt 1 great success Our Junior year was spent struggling through Emerson and Thoreau but we took time out to usher ln spring with a terrific class dance To celebrate one of our football victorles the class got together over hot dogs and doughnuts at Smedley Park Joan Rus sell became our first bride while Marge Johnston rellnqulshed her txtle as Queen of Algebra to Jane Penfield Most of our Sat urdays were spent 1n cruising around dem onstratlng our recently acquired drning, ab1l1ty Our boys came out on top of the lntramural league w1th Rodney Bray as champ feated football team ln our senior yeal ' The fall season was topped by the grand party IH the gym and our stupendous Blue Hefu en not to mention the stag party at Pressman s The girls will never forget those slumbcx parties' Our senlor play Heax en Can Walt couldnt have been better noi ould the party w hich follow ed at Andes B111 Huey with the help of many others put ox tx the successful C A R E program whlle Paul Hummer our actne Cabinet piesldent guided the school through a busy yeal And now as we leaxe we wish to thank you our Alma Mater for all of the fun and wonderful times we have had slnce we started to school almost thirteen years ago Yozus arfectzonafcly The Class of 1948 fhll fu ll I 1 , v yi I 1- . . 66 ' !, ' H ' , , . HSS Dun Alma Mater As the month of June draws near we look back on the many good times we haxe had at school which must come to an end at graduation The first big ex ent of our school career was our kindergarten trip to the Rose Valley Pool To add some excitement Millie Ber nard took a spill into the deep end but Phil Price played the hero of the day and loaned her some clothes By the end of the year we had finished our outdoor fireplace and tried it out by cooking applesauce We spent most of the next year passing contagious diseases around Waldo started the chicken pox epidemic and Nancy set whooping cough on its way After a tough winter we celebrated the coming of spring with a trip to Bellfields pond to feed the ducks Joan Russell started second grade off with a bang by breaking Miss Hoffmans radio We became experienced travelers that year getting acquainted with the community by visiting the Post Oifice the Police Station and the Fire Department To further our knowledge of the outside world we went to the Navy Yard. The year come to an excit- ing climax when we saw two boats launched at Essington and went on board Phylliss yacht. Our outings continued through thiid grade. The greatest came when we visitel the Great Valley Flour Mills in Paoli an'l brought back some buckwheat flour to make pancakes in our cooking class. Miss Young taught us to square dance, but we were much more interested in the Breyer's Ice Cream Company where we had all the ice cream we could eat, for once! By the end of the year Sue and Pat, bored with school, ran away to sing on the radio, but David Chickering anal Bob Buxbaum played detective and succesn- fully returned the travelers,
