At the final football game, spectators enjoyed the formation and crashing of an airplane as the band completed its '41 marching season. In the spring, the band gave Sharon Hill a preview of the forthcoming Spring Concert which later packed the High School Auditorium on April 24, tso much that extra chairs were set up for band loversl. Appreciation by all for Debby Drew's drum majoring and clerical work for the band was expressed by Dr. Robert Disque when he presented a watch to her at the concert. Debby received the highest rating possible for a drum major at the Cultural Olympics last fall. Another honor was brought to the band when its captain, Iack Linton, won the district contest for trombone solo. One of the numbers featured at the Band Concert was For Victory and Democracy, a march composed and orchestrated by director Mr. John Ienny. Other performances were at Alumni Day at Swarthmore College and Memorial Day in the village. ORCHESTRA President ............... ..... P eggy-Lou Chapman Vice-President ....... ....................... F red Morey if Secretary ................................................ Amy lane Davidson In the 1941-1942 season, the orchestra played for all of the Monday second period assemblies. In addition, orchestra enjoyed itself tremendously playing many old-timers like Take Me Out to the Ball Game for Blackfriars' musical melodrammer . During a concert given for a Iunior High Assembly, an original melody, Hungarian Lament, was played. A talented violinist mem- ber, Wilson Chambers, had written it, and Mr. Ienny had arranged it. Mr. Cole contributed the name. The orchestra has also enjoyed playing many orchestral transcriptions ot famous symphonies. The real purpose of orchestra, besides serving the school, is to give students a chance to play fine music from the great composers: they also learn how to work together, and they appreciate more the music of out- standing orchestras. The orchestra thus serves as a training ground and as an educational method, and fills a vital need for music in the school. fuel. 1 CHORUS President ............ ....... L ewis Beatty Vice President ..... ...... B etty Landon Librarian ............ . ................. Nancy Hoot Treasurer ................. ....... .........................,.... M a r1an Bernard The Chorus of sixty-five members, directed by Miss Blodgett, has had a big year, presenting several successful programs. Beginning with the radio broadcast over WFIL in the fall, the chorus easily kept up its standards under the able leadership of President Lewis Beatty. The radio program was repeated in assembly at Thanksgiving time. Then there were rehearsals for the Christ- mas program which was given in collaboration with the Iunior and Senior High Girls' Glee Clubs. On May eighth, the chorus sang several numbers at the annual Spring concert given by the Swarthmore Symphony Orchestra for the scholarship fund. The climax of the year for chorus came when they presented their first independent program on May twenty second. SENIOH PLAY One cold, gray morning a committee of students met before school to decide on the Senior Play. Everyone knows their decision fell on Thornton Wilder's Our Town , a charming play about two families in the early nineteen- hundreds. For the next six weeks the cast set a new example for faithfulness in rehearsals, while other Seniors worked on programs, lights, costumes, sound effects, and scenery. Thanks to the complete co-operation and fine spirit among the Seniors, the play was unusually effective. The play was repeated later at the Women's Club Spring Frolic. The lack of scenery proved to be not a hindrance, but a help. for each person in the audience was soon imagining the Main Street of his own childhood home. Wet handkerchiefs and warm accla- mations at both performances testified that under the able direction of Miss Kirk the cast had effectively put across the humanity and pathos of Our Town. rw-xr' ' Y T- W' f-'A -- W- BLACKFRIARS President .................. .......... In order to give the Iuniors and Seniors a better chance to show their ability and will to work, the choice of new members was postponed until after the spring production. On December lst several possible candidates gave The Afternoon Walk , Where Shall We Go? , and Death Says It Isn't So in assembly. Before Christmas vacation the dancing chorus was selected, and immediately afterwards they started rehearsing for the big hit of the season, Tandem Daze , given on March 20th. Many Iuniors and Seniors worked long and hard on this production. The following week the annual initiation was held with due tradition, and then the Iuniors topped the season by giving the Seniors a picnic on May 11. GARNET Garnet reigned supreme this year in its own private office adjoining Miss Bader's room. A new typewriter and special files helped make production run much more smoothly. The staff, headed by Lin Freegard as editor, and Doug Heath as assistant editor, was the largest in the Garnet's history. It proved its efficiency by putting out nine issues regardless of war time prices and priorities. The magazine did not re-enter interscholastic competition, but tried to continue the previous policy of writing for the school instead. Pages in columns, and continued stories were two of this year's innovations. The Garnet also under- took to put out the school handbook, and the Swarthmorean news staff put out a special School Board issue. Nancy Hoot It was found, after try-outs for Senior High Chorus early in the fall, that there were many, too many girls who wanted to sing in a chorus. The idea of forming a separate Senior High Girls' Glee Club was suggested and immed- iately seconded. It was quickly dubbed the Dawn Patrol , because of the hour oi rehearsal-7:40 Wednesday mornings. The club has participated in several school and outside performances, including singing for the Delaware County Teachers' Institute in Media, the Christmas Concert, the Rotary Club. and the High School Baccalaureate. It is hoped that in coming years the Glee Club will play an ever greater part in school activities. SENIOR CABINET President ............ ....... R ussel Kneedler Vice President ...... ............. I ack Linton Secretary ........ ...... I ody Dickson Treasurer ..... ..,............. .............. D o ug Heath The year 1941-42 was an outstanding one for the student government of Swarthmore High School. The Cabinet, actually using the power which is invested in the organization, met with both constructive and destructive criticism. One of the results of the increased interest was the spectacular job accomplished in the revision of the antiquated constitution, changing the method of repre- sentation. Another piece of business brought to a successful close was the scrap metal drive. The present Cabinet wishes next year's governing body success and feels sure they will take up the job where it was left oft, striving to make the Senior Cabinet an even more important factor in the school life at Swarthmore. Q FOOTBALL In the fall of 1941 the Swarthmore High School football squad came through with a very successful season, winning seven games, tying one and losing one. This record gains in importance when it is realized that only five varsity players, Henry Saulnier, Burton Peckerrnan, Louis de Moll, Al Haig, and Dick Bell re- turned from the previous year. Although the team was light in weight, the line hit hard and the back field was fast. As further evidence of the team's success, they were awarded the Class B championship trophy for Delaware County. TRACK The wearers of the Garnet shirts and winged feet started the season in a big way despite the loss of our one-man team of yesteryear. The team estab- lished decisive victories over Chester and Darby, and was high scorer in the Running Events at the Lansdowne Interscholastic Delco Meet, winning all but one of the running events. The relay team took a second and first place in record performances at the Penn Relays. Because of the injury of Al Haig, the team lost a tough one to Springfield which marred chances of an undefeated season. The boys are still looking forward to a successful year. Coach-Nathan Bell TENNIS TEAM This year the netmen of Swarthmore High School were prevented by time, distance, and lack of rubber supplies from carrying on their usual activities. As a result, tennis has been converted into an intra-mural activity open to all students of the high school. Some lettermen who returned this year were Lewis Beatty, Iim Cleaves, Stephen Hay, and Marshall Schmidt. However, the team definitely felt that because of war conditions, it was necessary to disband for the duration. LACROSSE Because of the rubber shortage and scarlet fever, 1942's crop of wonder girls , captained by Carol Froebel. had a little difficulty finding other schools to play. However, the girls drilled as hard as ever, and the Alumnae faithfully gave them a work-out each week. Everyone was determined to close the books once more on an undefeated record to complete the eleventh victorious year. Whether the team plays other schools or not, lacrosse will always be a popular and exciting sport at Swarthmore High.
