(jradnation after the stress and strain of exams time and traditiOii claim us . . . tfie immi- nent now of writtens and orals gives way to realizations of memory and anticipation . . . we are poised for a moment, seeing four years ' ordeals and triumphs, and next week ' s weddings ... in the green June week before the final monday, we pack our books and roll our rugs and wait, suspended . . . we have begun to leave ... in the face of that gradual silent leavetaking (the campus is emptier than we have known it, our rooms barer . . . no more hour exams or last minute papers written on the car- bons) — compared with this slipping and sliding away, commencement is an anti- climax . . . we should feel the awful final- ity, the ceremony should impress us . . . instead, we feel a little foolish . . . bystand- ers suddenly part of the parade . . . we try to look suitably solemn, but mortarboards evoke only giggles . . . last-minute things — it can ' t rain, i have twelve aunts coming ... up and down and around the amphi- theatre (i have a marching partner i hardly know — strange, after four years) . . . bac- calaureate, and the faculty carry the day (do you feel like some gawky black crow?) . . . parents descend in great clumps . . . monday (it didn ' t rain, after all) . . . line up and wait . . . down we go . . . look serious, don ' t trip on your heels . . . fifty buzzi ng movie cameras somebody speaks, some of us listen . . . then we ' re on . . . grab with your left, shake with your right ... a last series of brief memories as the names are called . . . then it ' s done . . . feeling foolish again, we switch the tassels on our mortarboard, and, solemn, smug, smiling, out we go . . . parents and cameras and cars and final packing are left . . . and we are gone. graduation speaker: p. leed
