SWARTHMORE COLLEGE HALCYON 1953 ( I HIS is the record of a year, and as such it must mean most to those who have endured, enjoyed and exhausted it . . . but to you who should happen to pick up the book we invite a three-seasonal glimpse into the swarthmore of 1951 and 1952 ... the swarthmore of our junior year ... a series of events ... a place ... a group of people . . . and, yes ... a spirit.

DEDICATION (10 the dining room, center of local folklore, a ritual noisily endured ... on the right, on the right . . . let ' s go left, I hate her . . . the roar must frighten visitors . . . tray, fork, knife, spoon, napkin . . . save two seats . . . wet or dry? . . . main dishes conversation pieces; the dependable sequence gives feeling of security . . . what have they done to this per- fectly good potato? . . .the legend of friday franks . . . who doesn ' t want his butter? . . . happy birthday to you . . . sometimes it gets rough: nap- kins in the soup and peas in the coffee . . . let ' s pick up the table and carry it out . . . who wants ice cream? . . . hurry, maybe I can meet him acci- dently on the way out . . . quiet homey atmosphere aids peaceful di- gestion; I only have time for orange juice and half a donut . . . confused unity of something that nine hundred people have in common.
