The loss of Cheyney, Spaulding and Stabler left a hole that could not be filled by the remaining members of the team. Captain Ave Har- rington continued his fine winning form, always leading the team, and winning three dual meets. Behind him, George Hastings, whose meteoric rise to star- dom was the feature of the year, Chuck Loucks, and newcomers Mike Dukakis, John Strauss and Charlie Sullivan were the usual scorers. The team wound up with a won two, lost four record, beating Lafayette and F M. Coach Jim Miller had his hands full developing stars of future years from the great number of Freshmen who turned out for the sport. CROSS COUNTRY

Winter AT SWARTHMORE ... the shortest season . . . punctuated by vacations and exams . . ,. everyone turns indoors . . . coats and scarves overflow underneath the feet of the lunch line and are crushed . . . even the library is crowded ... in commons chessmen click all day and typewriters all night . . . outside sharp winds . . . and sometimes snow . . . once in four years, perhaps, snow lies heavy on the trees ... the lawn is white and smooth . . . then sleds, emerging from the basement, cover it with criss-cross trails . . . and then it ' s all over . . . suddenly it ' s march and seaweed-like daffodils go down once more beneath a last snow . . . but their presence has been detected by unbelieving observers and winter is on the way out . . .
