Fall AT SWARTHMORE . with shouts of have a nice sum- mer? and handshakes ad nauseam . . . new sophomores, juniors, and seniors disembark and begin the climb up magill . . . they switch suitcases from hand to hand and pant . . . some carefully avoid the plaque, others deliberately stamp on it . . . who planted these oaks ' ? . . . 1881 . . . everything ' s changed a little . . . the daffodils left behind in June have succumbed to autumn ivy . . . soon the leaves are whirling from the trees and the walks are patterned in yellow and red and brown . . . then the design is broken . . . the underpass is filled with black ash and humid smoke . . . the smell of disinfectant in wharton mixes with that of the returning occupants . . . attics are always unlocked . . . rooms are becurtained and berugged . . . coats and ties and high heels are removed . . . the freshmen look on . . . wondering at the unexpected advent of so many intruders ... a final square dance and their three-day vacation is at an end . . . name tags fall into newly-bought waste baskets and classes begin . . . fall is a time of resolution . . . this year will be different . . . every- one is older that first week . . . but in a month you ' ve never been away.
