[28] THE purpose of the work in the Enghsh Department is to impart the ability to write clear, forceful, idiomatic English, and to arouse and foster love of good literature. A special effort is made to keep in view, at all times, the application of the works studied to the life and problems of the present day. The instruction in Public Speaking is designed to develop and train the voice as an efficient instrument of self-expression and literary interpretation; to give training in the principles and practice of effective public speaking, and in the production of drama.
