MASS HISHIRY As we come to the end of our high school days the memories of the past twelve years return with regreat that this is our last year. Mrs. Elizabeth Venters was our first grade teacher. Gene Pate, Charles Morton, Winona Carney, Mary Elizabeth Lee, James Norris, Terry Hatsell, Franklin Riggs, Jerry Cannon,Carrie Milsted, and Nettie Jean Lisk were the first grade pupils who are now still withus to graduate. How Mrs. Venters managed to teach us, while our minds were still on playing Cowboys and Indians is a mystery to us. When we were in the second grade, Mrs. Mason was our teacher. To us, being in the second grade was as good as being a Senior. Discipline was our motto in Miss Maude Ervin's third grade. We still remember the hard spelling lessons she used to give us. Much to our pleasure Mrs. Gladys Hatsell was both our fourth and fifth grades teacher. We shall always remember the time when the nurse came to give us our vaccinations. We all retreated to the back of the school. It seems like only yesterday that the Junior American Citizens under the supervision of Mrs. Lillian Ray, our sixth g rade teacher, was in session. That was the beginning of our learning how to conduct a meeting under parliamentary procedure. Hard work under Mr. Farnell and Mr. Bucklew pr e pa re d us for High School. Mr. Farnell's knowledge of world affairs taught us to be more alert in our problems to come. Glinda Winberry, Shelby Russell, Wesley Mobley, James Brown, Leo Watson, Herbert Page, Ray Cannon, Beedy Watson, Dorothy Merrill and Clyde Haye joined us through the years. It's hard to believe that four years ago we were freshmen. It took us a little while to get used to being addressed as fre s hm e n , but when we did we were really a part of the school. Many of our classmates were proficient enough to make the school athletic teams ! Jo Brandt joined us this year. One year later we were sophomores! We really enjoyed the F,F.A. and F.H.A. initiation day, when we could return to the freshmen some of the cruelty which we had received. We were happy to receive Bill Kay in our sophomore class. James Brown, Ray Cannon, Herbert Page, Leo Watson and BillKaywere on the football team. Gene Pate, Jerry Cannon, and Franklin Riggs played basketball. Jo Brandt, Nettie Lis k, Idalia Smith, Glinda Win- berry, Winona Carney and Williane Glancy played girls basketball. After a short vac ation we returned for our Junior Year which was filled with many happy e ve nt s . Our outstanding organization that year was the Beta Club. The ones who were eligible for the club were Bill Kay, Mary Elizabeth Lee, Carrie Milsted, Jo Brandt, Nettie Jean Lisk, Patsy B rite , Shelby Russell, and Wesley Mobley. Millard Johnson and Jay Cardy joined our class that year. The Junior Class Play, Beauty and The Beef, was a big success. The outstanding characters we re played by Mary Lee, Shelby Russell, Jo Brandt, Jerry Cannon and Terry Hatsell. The Junior-Senior Banquet was the highlight of the year. The theme was Moonlight And Roses and was enjoyed by all. It wasn't long before we r e alize d that we were seniors! It was a little hard to get accustomed to that title. As seniors we chose our motto to be Climb though the rocks be rugged. The officers for the Senior Class were, President-Bill Kay, Vice-President-Ella Ruth Taylor, Secretary-Jay Cardy, Corresponding Secretary-Carrie Milsted, and Treasurer- Shelby Russell. Benny Jarman and Jim Crocker entered our school this year. We are happy to say that Warren Ward, Betsy Duplissey, and Wilma Campbell, Juniors, will be graduating with us this year. The seniors who participated in sports were Jo Brandt, Winona Carney, Carol Guthrie, Nettie Lisk, Ida1iaSn-sith, Glinda Winberry, James Earl Brown, Jerry Cannon, Ray Cannon, Jay Cardy, Jim Crocker, Leo Watson, Herbert Page, Gene Pate, Bill Kay, Benny Jarman, and Millard Johnson. Jay Cardy, Millar d Johnson, Betsy Duplissey, Ella Ruth Taylor, Wilma Campbell, and Carol Guthrie were able to make the Beta Club this year, We all suffereda great loss when our classmate and friend, Patsy Brite, passed away in her Senior year. When someone mentions Swansboro High School in the future, the memories of many happy years will return to us. We will recall the many trips and parties that we have had at Swansboro High. We will remember the many hours of hard work which we now realize have prepared us for the many years ahead. As the first class to graduate from the new High School we hope that we have established a sort of tradition for hard work and ernest- ness to be patterned after by other classes.
