Mascots Bobby Gammon and Fecilia Seay Class Colors Carolina Blue and White Class Motto Knowledge comes; wisdom lingers. Class Flower Red Rose Cl ass History In 1954, a very large and, in the majority, scared group of Freshmen poured through the doors of Swain High. Brought together for the first time, the group began to get acquainted and to decide that they were from Swain High instead of Whittier, Lavada, Alarka, or Bryson City Elementary Schools. The novelty of being in high school soon wore off, however, and everybody settled down to work and play in the best traditions of the school. This Freshman Class won in the Field Day athletic events, but fell behind in the scholastic events to win by a bare six points. In their Sophomore year, this class had had many members to drop by the wayside, but still was of quite substantial size. This year, when they entered the doors of Swain High, they looked for¬ ward to fun and companionship under a new principal— L. H. Ballard. More representatives of the class were in clubs and activities. The class became a useful part of the school. In their Junior year, the members of this class, diminished even more in number, eagerly antic- pated the Junior-Senior Prom. Contrary to usual custom, only Juniors and Seniors were invited, and almost all agreed it was the best prom ever. There was the work and confusion of a Junior play— the first in many years. There was the proud and sad move-up day when they first became Seniors. The new student body president said, Seniors dismissed, and for the first time they all went out together—first! Then, the long awaited Senior year...there was the election of superlatives. Senior pictures, selling magazines, going to Washington, and the other things that characterize the Senior year. But most of all was knowing that, down underneath the gaity and outward sophistication, this was the last year as a class together. Breaking another custom, the class ring was changed, and personalized. Finally, there was graduation, with its proudness and tears, with long lives before them all, and only memories of those years in school. For now, they had sat together for the last time as a body, and there was a great new future to go forth and meet. ROBBYN DUNLAP DAVID CHILDERS Historians Super atives m ■j- f: WJ.
