This especially strong season edeed with a 1h-3-2 record. The team's most valuable asset proved to be their offense, led by Gail Russell with 19 goals. Tremendous help was furnished by senior captains Cathy Stevenson and Carrie Murray. The high point of the season for the Suzies was beating rival Millbury for the 3rd time in the district game, during which there was a double overtime and sudden death. The score was 2-1. The 1985 Sutton Cross-Country Team ended a season of experience with a 6-win 8-loss record. A 1h:h2 record was set for Sutton's 2.7mile course by junior Mike Piercey during the second race against Bromfield. This record eclipsed the previous one of 1M:5b set by Steven Davis. The best race for the team as a whole was the second race against Bromfield, at home. Although Sutton lost this race, all teammates set persaonal best times. All in all, '85 was a year of experience for the young team. Hopefully, '86 will be a peak season for Sutton Cross-Country! The Sammie J.V. team had a super season with a 10-O record in conference play. The only 2 losses were to f1 Wachusett--the hardest games of the season. The team played very well together. High scorer for '85 was Dan Loach. Goalie Shawn Courtney deserved recognition and attention because he posted many shutouts. '85 should also be remembered as the season in which the J.V. went undefeated in the Dual Valley Conference. Despite being ousted in the District E semi- finals, the 1985 soccer team was very successful. The team was louded with talent, including ten seniors and eight returning. The season began in Millbury on September 17. The game was thrilling with non-stop,up-and-down E? action. The Sutton fans were not disappointed as the Sammies came away with a 2-1 victory. Few league games stood out, as the Dual Valley Conference was somewhat weaker than in past years. But, the Douglas team, which had plagued this group for the previous two years, again frustrated the Sammies. They defeated Sutton once at home and played them 1-1 in Douglas. And then there were the Bromfield Trojans. Twice during the season, the powerful Trojans de- feated Sutton. The most memorable, and maybe the most exciting game in the history of the rivalry, to kiplace on Octobfig ,I+ in Harvard. In the soak- ing rain and cold te peratures, Bromfield scored three times in the second half to steal the Sammies 2-O lead and walk off with a 3-2. I was impressed by the discipline and artifacts of the country.H nChinatown was fun! I liked the food. But, possibly worse then the defeat itself, Sutton lost victory, it's star goalie, David Carter, to an injury which occured late on the first half. The strong Sutton club was unchallenged throughout the remainder of the season and en- tered the District E tournament with an impress- sive 11-3-1 record. In the opening round, the Sammies faced the Woolies of Millbury, who had vastly improve since the season opener. During the game, the Sammies scored twice early. They then played strong defensively and held on to win,2-O, advancing them into the semifinals. For the third time, they fell short. On the Omni-turf of WPI's alumni field, in the harshest of weather conditions, the Sutton team fought hard to come within 3-2 of the Trojans, after being down 3-O. But, with only seconds left, the Trojans scored, The season was over. i But the consistent coaching of Mr. Ellis, T backed with a young and talented returning group next year, should provide many thrills to come. .I OCLI .7 ' i N' In xfwx .ies 3l...Juniors 35...Sophomores Q 39...Underclassmen 5 candids 4O...The Holiday 42...Candy Sales 43...Christmas 44...Cheerleaders 46...J.V. The 1986 J.V. Boys' Basketball team combined the talents of several freshmen and some of the returning players from '85 to finish the season with a 6-8 record. The team consisted of five freshmen and five sophomores, of which Patrick Conley, Jim Chase, Chris Rucker, and Shane Libbey were alternates. The best game of the season was the confrontation with Tahanto, played at Tahanto. The undefeated had a tough 5 point victory over the red hot Sammies during that exciting game. Praise must be given to Coach William Ellis for his work with the boys. One of-the reasons why he is a good coach is that he has every- body play during the games, thus giving the players valuable exper- ience for the future. Y The 1986 junior varsity Suzies introduced several promising playersg as the young team was composed of five freshmen, 6 sopho- mores, and one junior. Alternate players included sophomores Tara Wunschel, Kim Conley, Laurie Berg- offen, Tracey Gosselin, and junior Nicole Curtis. Notable performances were seen this year by junior Nicole Curtis, sophomores Kristen Maki and Kim Conley, and freshmen Kristi Briggs and Leigh Boutiette. One of the best games of the season was the first encounter with Tahanto on January 7. The clincher in this suspenseful game was 5'llH 4 center Kristen Maki's final buzzer I shot, which concluded Sutton's first win of the season. New coach Cindy Bicknell s perseverance helped to mold the girls into one working unit. This season of experience was wrapped up with a 5-IO record. I fi li ? E . Included in this were the Clark Tour- nament, district final, and D.V C. games. The record for D.V.C. play was I5-2. The Green Machine proved to be an in- domintable force, tying for the first place with Black- stone-Millville. Sutton played against North Brookfield during the first round of the Clark Tournament. However, their Tourney play was halted by losing this difficult game. Since the Sammies had such a terrific record, they qualified for the Division E, District 3finals. On March 3 at Holy Cross, they faced North Brookfield once again. This time, the tables were turned and the Sammies moved on to play Littleton at the Worcester Centrum on March 7. There, they placed runner-up after a close game. Under Coach Romasco's guidance, the Sammies developed into a strong, highly skilled team. Even with the speed and skill of the veteran team members, the Sammies lacked height. This was granted in the form of Matt Jenson, a transfer studeni from Holy Name. This completed the Sutton Line-up which obviously proved to be a well-rounded winning team. The Sutton Suzies played great basketball during their '86 season, finishing with a IO-7 record. They were only one game short to qualify for the district finals. This invincible team included a wide range of talents, and with the help of Coach Joan Siska, they were able to combine these talents to create a well-balanced team. Since the Suzies were friends as well as teamates, they were able to work extremely well with what they had, which undoubtedly was a factor in creating theirmajor successful season. The best games were reportedly the second confrontation with Brom- field, and the face-off with Nipmuc. Of this team, two players were commended for their out- standing performances--Holly Ustinovich and Carrie Murray, respectively, were selected for the first and second D.V.C. All-Star team. ,E iAf f a .', cUTTUy .5 U., rm 34. n if M nun NIS Wvv-wv The 1986 Sutton Ski Club, coor- dinated by Mrs. Licopoli, had a great time on the slopes of MT. Wachusett. And, as is a customary, they sang for graduation. n Being in chorus does not mean to simply sing songs. Chorus members must 0 learn a great deal about music before they can actually sing a song that will be performed. Miss Thatcher taught these students to train their voices, much the same way in which athletes train their bodies. Therefore, the chorus deserves a round of applause for their efforts. -v. 1 I- 1' w R r, TJ Y Q 1 11 4 ' .l - . 4 .
